How to Add Live Captions and Subtitles to a Stream

Learn which live-caption methods work for YouTube and Twitch, how to configure each route, and what to check when captions are missing or out of sync.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add live captions, choose a caption route supported by your streaming platform: enable YouTube’s automatic captions if your channel and stream are eligible, send a caption feed to YouTube, embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the encoder, or use a compatible caption workflow for Twitch. Then check the viewer-facing player to confirm captions appear and stay aligned with speech. Prepared subtitles and translated text are different from captions generated or supplied in real time.

Choose the right caption method

The platform determines how captions reach viewers. Automatic speech recognition turns spoken words into captions; a captioner or compatible service can send a caption feed; and an encoder can carry embedded caption data. These methods are not interchangeable, and the available options vary by platform and stream.

  • Automatic captions: convenient when the platform offers them for your stream, but availability and language support are limited.
  • External caption feed: a captioner or compatible software sends text to the platform in real time. Account for synchronization and any platform-specific delay requirements.
  • Embedded captions: caption data is carried in the encoded video stream. This requires the encoder and caption source to be configured to use a supported format.
  • Subtitles or translation: prepared text or translated speech may need a separate workflow. Confirm that the platform and tool support the language and live delivery you need.

No cited platform documentation establishes a controlled accuracy comparison between these routes. Choose based on platform support, language, latency, VOD needs, setup complexity, and viewer readability.

Add captions to a YouTube Live stream

Option 1: Turn on automatic captions

YouTube Help describes live automatic captions for eligible English-language channels at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. The option is configured per stream, and eligibility or rollout may change; check the controls shown for your own stream.

  1. Open the stream’s setup or settings in YouTube Studio.
  2. Find the closed-caption settings and enable Closed captions.
  3. Choose Automatic captions if it is available for that stream.
  4. Start the stream and check the viewer-facing player to verify captions are present and aligned with speech.

Live automatic captions do not persist on the ended stream’s video. YouTube generates captions separately for the VOD, and those captions may differ from the live captions.

Option 2: Send a caption feed

YouTube’s live-caption workflow provides a signed caption-ingestion HTTP URL for compatible caption software or a captioner. YouTube states that each stream entry point can have one caption feed only. Treat that URL as a stream-specific ingestion address and provide it only to the software or captioner that needs to send captions.

  1. Create or configure the YouTube live stream and enable Closed captions in its setup.
  2. Copy the signed caption-ingestion HTTP URL shown by YouTube.
  3. Enter that URL in supported caption software or give it to your captioner, following that provider’s instructions.
  4. For the event workflow described by YouTube, add a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay, enable captions, and supply the ingestion URL to the caption software.
  5. Keep the computer’s system clock accurate, then verify captions in the viewer-facing player and check their timing against the speech.

The 30- or 60-second delay is part of YouTube’s documented event workflow, not a universal setting for every caption method. Plan for the added latency when coordinating speakers, audience interaction, or other live elements.

Option 3: Embed 608/708 captions in the encoder

If your caption source and encoder support EIA 608/CEA 708, configure the encoder to carry those captions and choose Embedded 608/708 in YouTube’s closed-caption settings. The standard allows multiple language tracks, but YouTube’s cited live-caption page says it currently supports one track. Confirm current format support with your encoder and caption provider.

YouTube’s live-caption documentation lists Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net among supported software or services. Check with each provider for current versions, compatibility, and setup steps; the listing does not establish that every version or configuration will work with your encoder.

Add captions to a Twitch stream

Twitch has its own caption support and creator workflows. Its guide recommends an OBS caption plugin as one way to provide real-time closed captions. Twitch Creator Camp describes a plugin workflow using Google Cloud Speech Recognition and Twitch caption support, with captions viewers can toggle in supported live streams and VODs.

  1. Check Twitch’s current caption guide and confirm the caption workflow is still maintained and compatible with your OBS setup.
  2. Review the plugin’s current setup requirements, language support, and any account or service requirements before installing it.
  3. Configure the caption source and Twitch integration as directed by the current provider documentation.
  4. Open the stream in a viewer-facing player and confirm the CC control and captions are available and synchronized.

The cited Twitch materials do not establish the current maintenance status or language coverage of a particular plugin release. Verify those details rather than assuming an older guide describes today’s setup. Captions are not automatically present on every Twitch stream. When captions are available, viewers can use the player’s CC controls and adjust settings such as size, color, and placement.

For teams using Google Cloud Live Stream API

Google Cloud Live Stream API documents a more technical route: configure captions and translations as text streams and map an input audio track as the source. This is an API implementation path for teams building a managed streaming workflow, not a beginner toggle in OBS. Follow the current API documentation for the configuration details and validate the result in the target player.

Test captions before relying on them

Check the complete viewer experience, not only the encoder or caption software’s status indicator.

  • Availability: open the public or test stream in the player your audience will use and confirm captions can be enabled.
  • Synchronization: compare captions with live speech throughout the stream, including after pauses or changes in audio routing.
  • Readability: check that text is legible and does not obscure important on-screen content. On Twitch, viewers can adjust caption display settings when captions are available.
  • Language: confirm that the selected caption route supports the spoken language and any translation you need.
  • VOD behavior: do not assume live captions will carry over to the recording. YouTube generates separate captions for the ended stream’s video, which may differ.

Troubleshoot missing or misaligned captions

The YouTube automatic-caption option is missing

The feature is documented for eligible English-language channels at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable, and is set per stream. Check the stream’s closed-caption settings and the eligibility shown in your account. If the option is unavailable, use a supported caption feed or embedded captions instead.

A YouTube caption feed does not appear

Confirm that closed captions are enabled for the stream, that the caption software is using the signed ingestion URL for that stream, and that the feed is being sent to the correct stream entry point. YouTube allows one caption feed per entry point. Check that the computer clock is accurate and, for the documented event workflow, that the required broadcast delay is configured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Embedded captions are absent

Check that YouTube is set to Embedded 608/708 and that the encoder is actually configured to include EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data. Verify compatibility with the encoder and caption provider, and remember YouTube’s cited documentation currently describes support for one track.

Twitch viewers cannot find captions

Captions are not automatic on every stream. Verify that your creator-side caption workflow is connected and sending captions, then check the stream in a viewer-facing player for the CC control. Confirm plugin maintenance and compatibility against current provider information.

Captions appear late or drift out of sync

Check the caption source, encoder or software output, and stream timing together. For YouTube’s event caption workflow, use the documented 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and keep the system clock accurate. Recheck timing in the player after making changes.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from live captioning: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, rather than capturing a live camera or adding captions. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
