Short answer: a graphic is clickable only when the tool adds an interactive link and the final delivery format preserves it. Use linked elements in Canva and export a non-flattened PDF, use prototype hotspots in Figma Editor, or add links directly to elements in Figma Sites or another website builder. PNG, JPG, MP4, and ordinary social-media posts flatten the artwork and do not carry a working hyperlink.
For many graphics, separate the design-generation problem from the link-destination problem. Build a clean data table, connect fields to placeholders, generate variations, then verify every published PDF, page, or prototype. Do not assume that a URL column automatically becomes a different hyperlink for each row unless your current editor explicitly supports and demonstrates that mapping.
Choose the delivery format before you design
The right workflow depends on where someone will click.

Canva documents that hyperlinks work in supported PDF exports except flattened PDFs, but not in PNG, JPG, MP4, or social-media posts. A static graphic can advertise a URL or QR code, but it cannot contain the same interactive link layer as a PDF or web page.

Canva: add a link and preserve it in PDF
Add the hyperlink to a graphic
- Open the design in Canva and select the image, shape, or other element that should be clickable.
- Use the element’s Link control, enter the destination URL, and apply it.
- Repeat for other graphics, checking that each target is complete and uses the intended protocol and path.
- Choose Share → Download, select PDF, and leave the design non-flattened. Do not choose an export or conversion that merges the page into one bitmap.
- Open the downloaded PDF in a viewer and click every linked graphic. Test on desktop and mobile readers if the file will be distributed across both.
Why common Canva exports fail
PNG and JPG are single raster images; MP4 is video; a social post is rendered by the platform. None carries Canva’s element hyperlink. A flattened PDF likewise merges the objects into an image and loses the clickable layer. If recipients need a downloadable file, send the non-flattened PDF itself rather than a preview image of it.
Generate many designs with Canva Bulk Create
Bulk Create connects spreadsheet columns to text and image placeholders and creates a variation for each row. Canva’s current help documentation describes selecting up to 300 rows and 150 data fields in the workflow, and recommends previewing variations before generating the batch. The feature is documented as desktop-only for Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Enterprise, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits users.
Prepare the source table
- Make one header row with stable names such as
headline,image,price, anddestination_url. - Keep one record per design. Remove blank rows, duplicate records, malformed URLs, and accidental leading or trailing spaces.
- Use a consistent URL format and decide whether query parameters, fragments, or campaign codes belong in each destination.
- Import the table in Canva’s Bulk Create flow and connect each supported column to the matching placeholder.
- Preview a representative sample, including the first, middle, and last rows, before creating the full batch.
The per-row URL limitation
Canva’s official Bulk Create help explains data connections for text and image elements, but it does not confirm that a URL column can set a different hyperlink on a graphic for every generated row. Treat destination_url as data unless the current editor exposes a hyperlink mapping and your test proves it works. If it does not, generate the artwork in bulk and add or maintain links in a later publishing step, or use a web system that reads the same data table to create linked elements.

Batch quality checks
- Open several generated designs and confirm that text, images, and crops correspond to the same row.
- Inspect the link control on each graphic that must be interactive; a visible URL in text is not proof that the image itself is linked.
- Export a small PDF sample first, then click its graphics in a PDF viewer.
- Record the source-row identifier and destination so a changed URL can be found and corrected without rebuilding unrelated designs.
Figma: use the interaction layer that matches your product
Figma Editor and prototypes
Figma Editor does not directly link image or vector objects as ordinary hyperlinks. For a prototype, select the frame or object, open the Prototype tab, add an interaction, and choose the destination frame or URL supported by your prototype setup. When multiple selected objects share one destination, Figma documents applying the interaction to the selection in bulk. A hotspot is a separate interactive layer, so keep it aligned with the visible graphic and resize it when the design changes.
Figma Sites
In Figma Sites, select the site layer or object and add a link. The documented destinations include another page, an external site, the previous page, or an anchor. Publish the site, then test the actual published URL at each responsive breakpoint. A prototype interaction is not automatically a production website link; confirm the behavior in the surface your audience will use.
Scale the workflow without losing link accuracy
Use a source-of-truth URL register
Keep destination URLs outside the artwork in a controlled table or content system. Give each graphic a stable ID, owner, destination, last-reviewed date, and status. This makes redirects, retired campaigns, and typo fixes auditable. Avoid silently changing a destination in one exported PDF while leaving an older version online.

Separate generation, linking, and delivery
- Generate: create the visual variations from approved data.
- Link: apply destinations in the platform that will deliver the interactive experience.
- Publish: export a non-flattened PDF or publish the site/prototype.
- Verify: test the delivered artifact, not only the editor canvas.
Make testing proportional to risk
For a small batch, click every graphic. For hundreds, test every template and a sample of rows, then run an automated URL check against the source register where possible. Always fully test high-value links, regulated disclosures, checkout buttons, and any batch created after a template change. Check redirects, authentication requirements, mobile behavior, and whether an overlay intercepts the intended click.

FAQ
Can a QR code replace an embedded hyperlink?
It can provide access from a printed or static image, but it is a different interaction. The reader must scan it, and the code must remain large and high-contrast enough to decode.
Should I use one hotspot over an entire graphic?
Use one hotspot when the whole graphic has one destination. If visible regions lead to different destinations, create separate, non-overlapping hotspots and test their boundaries.

Can I make an image clickable in a PNG file?
No. PNG is a flat raster format. Put the image in a linked web page or non-flattened PDF, or provide a visible URL or QR code.
Does Canva Bulk Create automatically assign each row’s URL to its image?

What is the difference between a Figma prototype hotspot and a website link?
