How to Add Keyframes in CapCut: Animate Clips, Text, and Images

Add a keyframe, set a later property value, and let CapCut animate the change. This guide covers the desktop and web workflow, motion timing, and missing PC controls.

To add keyframes in CapCut, select a timeline element, place the playhead where the change should begin, and click the diamond beside a property such as Position, Scale, Rotation, or Opacity. Move the playhead later and change that same property; CapCut interpolates the change between the two points. The exact controls can vary by platform, app version, and selected asset.

How CapCut keyframes work

A keyframe records a property value at a particular point in time. Set one value at the beginning of a move and a different value later, and CapCut fills in the transition between them. For example, a still image can grow from a smaller scale into a closer view, or a title can move from off-screen into position.

CapCut describes this process on its keyframe animation page: “The video automatically interpolates the movement or change between keyframes.” Interpolation creates the in-between motion; the keyframes define its endpoints.

How to add keyframes in CapCut on desktop

  1. Place the element on the timeline. Open your project, import the media if needed, and add the video clip, image, text, or other element you want to animate.
  2. Select it and set the starting point. Click the element on the timeline, then move the playhead to the moment its animation should begin.
  3. Add the first keyframe. In the right editing panel, locate the property you want to animate—such as Position, Scale, Rotation, or Opacity—and click its diamond-shaped keyframe control.
  4. Set the later state. Move the playhead to the point where the change should finish, then adjust the same property. CapCut’s documented desktop workflow uses that changed value to create the next keyframe and transition.
  5. Preview and refine. Play the segment. If the move is too fast, slow, or extensive, adjust the distance between the keyframes or the property values. Add another point only if the motion needs a change in direction or pacing.

CapCut’s desktop keyframe guide documents this workflow. In the web editor, the keyframe animation guide describes a similar sequence through the Basic panel: set a property keyframe, move the playhead, then change the property. Some advanced web options may be limited compared with desktop, so look for the controls in your own editor rather than assuming the panels match exactly.

What you can animate with keyframes

Available properties depend on the element and the version of CapCut. The official desktop guide names position, scale, rotation, opacity, effects, and audio properties among its keyframe uses. CapCut’s feature page also names shape and color. These are documented examples, not a guarantee that every property appears for every asset.

  • Position: Slide a title or sticker into view, or move a visual across the frame.
  • Scale: Push in on a detail or pull back to reveal more of the image.
  • Rotation: Give an element a controlled turn when it suits the edit.
  • Opacity: Fade a layer in or out by changing its opacity over time.
  • Effects or audio: The desktop guide describes keyframing effects and audio values such as volume. Find the relevant control in your installed version before building the animation around it.

How to make keyframe motion feel intentional

Start with two purposeful points

For a simple move, one starting point and one ending point are usually enough to define the change. Keep the movement restrained, then preview it at normal playback speed. A move that looks smooth while paused may feel abrupt in the finished sequence.

Use timing to control the feel

The interval between keyframes affects how quickly the change reads: closer points produce a shorter transition, while points farther apart spread it over more time. If your version offers Ease In, Ease Out, a speed curve, or a graph editor, use those controls to shape the pace. CapCut describes speed curves as a way to refine timing, including motion that starts quickly and slows near the end; the available controls are not necessarily identical in every build.

Add an intermediate point only for a reason

An extra keyframe can redirect an element or change its pace partway through a move. If a simple transition is already doing what you need, extra points can make refinement harder. Combine position with a modest scale or opacity change when that combination helps direct attention, not just to animate more properties.

Why can’t I see keyframes in CapCut on PC?

CapCut’s PC troubleshooting guide identifies several checks for a missing keyframe control:

  • No clip or element is selected: Select the video, image, or text clip on the timeline and inspect the editing panel.
  • The selected asset may not support keyframes: Some template elements, grouped clips, or special assets may not expose the controls. Try a standard clip to check whether the issue is specific to that element. Detach or replace a template element only if appropriate for your project.
  • The relevant panel may be hidden or collapsed: Inspect sections such as Video, Transform, or Adjust for properties including Position, Scale, and Opacity.
  • The app may be out of date: Check for an update and restart CapCut. If the control remains missing, CapCut advises contacting its support.

Desktop, web, and mobile differences

CapCut’s official material documents keyframe animation in desktop and web workflows, while noting that some advanced web options may be limited compared with desktop. The feature page describes browser and PC/Mac editing, but the available guidance does not establish complete feature parity or a comprehensive current comparison with mobile. Check the property panel in the version you use; a control or property shown in a desktop tutorial may not appear for the same asset elsewhere.
