How to Add Happo Visual Tests to a Vue Project

Happo has no documented Vue-only adapter, but you can add visual checks through Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, or its API. Here’s how to choose and set up a practical workflow.

You can add Happo visual tests to a Vue project without a Vue-specific Happo plugin. Use Happo with Storybook to compare isolated component states, or connect it to the Cypress or Playwright tests you already use for whole-page and user-flow coverage. Choose the route that matches what you want to protect, then configure Happo and run it in CI.

Choose a visual testing route

Happo’s documented integrations include Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, and a generic API; the reviewed materials do not document a dedicated Vue adapter. The right integration depends on whether you want to test components in isolation or capture states in a running application.

Route Best fit What to plan for
Storybook Reusable Vue components and deliberately chosen states, such as loading, error, or expanded. Create and maintain stories; configure the preview app with the global Vue setup the components need.
Cypress Application pages and user journeys covered by existing Cypress tests. Use Happo’s current Cypress integration instructions for runner-specific configuration.
Playwright Application pages and flows covered by existing Playwright tests. Use Happo’s current Playwright integration instructions for runner-specific configuration.
Happo API A custom capture workflow that does not fit the documented integrations. Implement authentication and capture submission using the API documentation.

Happo describes screenshots across browsers and viewport sizes, but browser availability depends on the account plan. Check the current pricing details before designing a required browser matrix.

Set up Happo in a Vue project

1. Pick representative states

For component-level coverage, start with a small Storybook set for components where visual regressions matter. Include meaningful states—not every possible prop combination. A button might need default, disabled, and loading stories; a data panel might need populated, empty, and error states.

For full pages or user journeys, use the Cypress or Playwright suite already maintained by the project when practical. This reuses existing routes, fixtures, and setup instead of duplicating application navigation in a separate visual test.

2. Install the current package

The current Happo repository documents installing happo as a development dependency. Use the package manager used by the project:

  • npm install --save-dev happo
  • pnpm add --save-dev happo
  • yarn add --dev happo

The repository’s basic example uses a happo.config.ts file, defineConfig imported from happo, API credentials supplied through environment variables, browser targets, and the npx happo command. Because runner-specific configuration can change, follow the live instructions for your chosen integration rather than copying unverified configuration keys. See the current Happo repository.

3. Connect Storybook to Vue’s application setup

With Vue 3 and Vite, Storybook creates a Vue app for component previews. If your components rely on global plugins, components, directives, or mixins, register the same required setup in Storybook’s preview app using its setup hook. Otherwise, a story may render differently from the application or fail because dependencies available in production were never installed in the preview.

Keep story data and state deterministic: use fixed fixture data, avoid time-dependent content, and ensure the state shown is intentional. Happo’s Storybook integration instructions are the source for the current connection steps.

4. Connect Cypress or Playwright when testing app flows

If the target is a full page or a journey—such as opening a menu, submitting a form, and viewing a confirmation—use the corresponding Happo integration for the runner already in the project. Let the existing test establish the application state, then capture that state through the supported integration. Do not assume Storybook setup or configuration applies to Cypress or Playwright.

For a custom integration, Happo’s API documentation describes JWT and HTTP Basic authentication. The documentation characterizes Basic authentication as the simpler, less secure option. Keep credentials in environment variables or a secrets manager, never in committed source files.

5. Run visual checks in CI and review changes

Run the visual suite on the changes or pull requests where regressions should be caught, and review Happo’s before-and-after output. A detected difference is a prompt for review, not automatically a defect: intentional UI changes may need their new appearance accepted as the expected result. Happo’s integration materials describe CI and pull-request review workflows.

Reduce avoidable screenshot noise

Happo documents options to silence animations, wait for fonts and asynchronous assets, and apply color-delta tolerance. These can reduce incidental differences, but they do not make a test deterministic by themselves.

  • Capture stable states with fixed inputs and data.
  • Wait for the UI and assets your test actually depends on.
  • Use tolerance deliberately; too much can hide small but meaningful regressions.
  • Review changed output instead of treating every pixel difference as a failure requiring automatic acceptance.

Common setup problems

Story renders differently from the Vue app

Check whether the component depends on a global plugin, directive, component, mixin, or application-level provider that Storybook has not registered. Configure the preview Vue app with the required setup.

Happo cannot authenticate

Confirm the credentials are present in the environment used by the local command or CI job, and that they are supplied in the manner required by the current Happo configuration. Do not solve the issue by committing a secret to the repository.

Visual output changes between runs

Look for animations, fonts or asynchronous assets that are not ready at capture time, and non-fixed test data. Use Happo’s documented noise controls where appropriate, then stabilize the state being captured. Tolerance can help with small rendering differences, but it is not a substitute for stable inputs.

A browser target is unavailable

Check the account’s current plan entitlements. Happo’s pricing information says included browsers vary by plan, so do not assume a browser listed in integration materials is available on every plan.

A copied configuration option does not work

Runner settings may differ between Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, and the API, and configuration can change. Use the current instructions for the exact integration and package version rather than borrowing keys from another runner or an older example.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than a visual-regression review workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for Happo’s component comparison workflow, but it can capture a URL with one GET request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Happo have a Vue-specific plugin?

The reviewed Happo materials document Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, and API integrations, but not a dedicated Vue adapter.

Should I use Storybook or Cypress/Playwright for Vue visual tests?

Use Storybook for isolated component states and a test-runner integration for full pages or user journeys; the choice depends on what you need to cover.
