Neither tool provides a ready-made REST endpoint, and neither guarantees that every GIF will shrink.
How the API processing flow should work
A GIF optimizer handles image processing; your application remains responsible for the REST endpoint, upload rules, job lifecycle, and response. A practical flow is:

- Accept and validate the upload. Set request-size, file-count, and execution-time limits. Treat the filename and MIME type as untrusted; inspect the file contents and reject malformed or unsupported input.
- Process it in isolation. Run the optimizer in a bounded worker or subprocess, with resource limits and an isolated temporary-file location.
- Check the output. Decode or render the result and compare its appearance and animation behavior with the input.
- Compare byte sizes. Keep the original if the optimized output is not smaller or fails validation.
- Deliver the result. Return the optimized bytes with an appropriate content type and content length, or store the output and return a job/result reference.
These upload, isolation, validation, and response steps are application design guidance. The cited tool documentation describes command-line image processing, not a REST contract.

Choose a GIF optimizer
Gifsicle: focused GIF optimization
Gifsicle is designed to create, manipulate, and optimize GIF images and animations. Its optimization levels offer a starting point for backend tuning: O1 stores changed portions, O2 also uses transparency, and O3 tries several optimization methods. Higher levels can take longer, and no level guarantees a smaller file; in rare cases, even O3 can enlarge one. See the Gifsicle project documentation.

Begin with a conservative level, then benchmark the levels against representative uploads for both runtime and output size. Compare actual bytes rather than promising a fixed compression percentage. If distributing or embedding Gifsicle, review the repository’s GPLv2 license terms and its stated alternative permission condition for certain contexts.
ImageMagick: broader image-processing suite
ImageMagick supports GIF processing as part of a broader image toolkit. Its animation optimization examples cover frame and transparency optimization. Correct frame optimization may require a coalesced animation, and disposal behavior can make transformations more complicated: a frame may depend on how earlier frames are displayed or cleared.

Do not assume that specifying -compress LZW proves the output is efficiently compressed. ImageMagick documents that when LZW support is unavailable, an LZW request can produce uncompressed LZW data that remains decodable but is larger than expected. Confirm the runtime’s build configuration and measure output files using the ImageMagick compression option reference.

A smaller file is useful only if the resulting GIF still behaves correctly. Frame regions, transparency, and disposal settings affect how an animation is represented and displayed. Validate more than the first frame: check timing, looping, transparency, and appearance across the animation.

If you offer lossy color reduction, make it an explicit quality option rather than silently applying it. It may reduce file size, but can visibly degrade fidelity. Inspect representative results before choosing defaults.

| Approach | Fits when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous response | Uploads are small and processing fits a strict, predictable latency budget. | The request remains open while optimization runs; enforce limits to avoid tying up API capacity. |
| Asynchronous job | File sizes or processing times are larger or less predictable. | The client needs a job/result reference and a way to retrieve the completed output. |
The right choice depends on your workload and product requirements; tool documentation does not prescribe an API architecture.

Measure results and define fallbacks
Record input size, output size, processing duration, selected settings, and failures. Use those measurements to establish realistic latency and resource budgets, and to decide when to return the original unchanged. Test with representative animations, including files that use transparency and complex frame disposal. Do not assume an average or universal reduction: the cited documentation supplies no such figure.
