When people say they want to add games to Discord, they usually mean one of two things: have Discord automatically detect what you’re playing (so your status shows “Playing …”), or connect your accounts so Discord can display your game activity and friends’ updates.
In 2024, Discord’s most common path is Game Activity via automatic detection, plus optional account linking for better coverage (especially for Steam and other integrations). The steps below are written so you can follow them without guessing.

What It Means to Add Games to Discord
Discord doesn’t “install games” into your account. Instead, it shows game-related presence based on what you play and what accounts you’ve linked.
- Game Activity (Rich Presence): your profile shows what you’re currently playing.
- Account connections: linking services like Steam helps Discord recognize games and update status more reliably.
- In-server game features: certain servers use bots or events, but that’s separate from “adding games to Discord” on your profile.
Prerequisites Before You Start
Before changing settings, confirm you have the basics in place so Discord has something to detect.

- A Discord account (desktop, web, iPhone, iPad, or Android app).
- The game running correctly on your device.
- For best results, Discord app updated (Discord typically updates automatically; check for updates if you’re stuck).
- If you want integrations, make sure you can sign into the same game account you’ll connect (Steam, Battle.net, Xbox, PlayStation).
Method 1: Let Discord Detect Games Automatically (Game Activity)
Discord’s default behavior is to detect games you launch and show them as your “Playing” status. This is the fastest option.
- Open Discord.
- Go to User Settings (gear icon) → Game Activity.
- Ensure detection is enabled (look for an option such as Display current game as a status or similar wording).
- Start the game you want to show.
- Return to Discord and wait a few seconds. Your status should update to “Playing Game Name”.
If your status stays blank, don’t panic—use the troubleshooting section later. Detection can fail for specific games, drivers, or permission settings.
Method 2: Connect Your Game Accounts (Steam, Battle.net, Console)
Account connections can improve the reliability of game presence and help Discord associate your identity across platforms.
Connect Steam on Discord
- In Discord, open User Settings (gear icon).
- Go to Connections.
- Find Steam and select Connect.
- Log in to Steam in the browser prompt and approve access.
- Close the prompts and reopen Discord if the link doesn’t appear immediately.
Connect Battle.net
- Go to User Settings → Connections.
- Under available services, click Battle.net → Connect.
- Authenticate in the browser and approve the connection.
- Launch a Battle.net game and check your Discord status.
Connect Console Accounts (Xbox / PlayStation)
Console integration may vary by region and plan availability, but the workflow is similar: link your console account inside Discord, then play the game on the connected console.
- Open User Settings (gear icon) → Connections.
- Select the console service you see listed (commonly Xbox or PlayStation).
- Complete the sign-in and authorization steps.
- Start a supported game and check whether Discord updates to “Playing”.
Method 3: Force Discord to Show a Game (Manual/Workarounds)
Discord usually prefers automatic detection, but there are practical workarounds when a specific game won’t show.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
1) Restart the game + refresh Discord
Close the game fully, then reopen it. After it’s running, switch to Discord and wait for presence to update.
2) Disable and re-enable Game Activity
- Open User Settings → Game Activity.
- Turn off game display (or detection) if available.
- Wait 10–20 seconds.
- Turn it back on, then launch the game again.
3) Use correct launch method (important for launchers)
Some games launch through third-party launchers (EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar, etc.). If the game shows up as “nothing,” try launching the game from the final launcher window so the process Discord detects is the one running.
4) If you’re using mods or emulators
Many emulators and heavily modded setups don’t provide the signals Discord expects. In those cases, game presence may never populate reliably, even when account linking is correct.
Platform-Specific Steps
Discord settings are mostly consistent across devices, but the navigation labels can differ. Use the sections below that match your setup.
Windows PC (Discord desktop app)
Start by verifying Game Activity is enabled, then test with a single game first.

- Turn on game display/status.
- Connect Steam under Connections if you want improved recognition.

Browser (Discord on web)
Web users can still see status and connections, but the ability to detect local games depends on your environment. If presence isn’t updating, switch to the desktop app to test.
- Go to Discord in your browser and sign in.
- Open User Settings.
- Check Game Activity and ensure it’s enabled.
- If you’re trying to display local gameplay, install the Discord desktop app as a fallback.
- Start the game and refresh the page if needed.
iPhone (Discord app)
On iPhone, you manage settings and connections; the device still needs to support the activity signals for game presence to show properly.
- Open the Discord app.
- Tap your profile icon → User Settings.
- Find and open Game Activity.
- Enable the option to display current games as a status.
- Go to Connections to link Steam/console accounts if those options appear.
- Launch your game and check your profile.
iPad (Discord app)
The workflow mirrors iPhone. If game presence doesn’t update, expect it to be more reliable when you run the game on a computer with Discord desktop.
- Open Discord on iPad.
- Go to User Settings.
- Open Game Activity and enable game status.
- Open Connections to link accounts (if available).
- Start the game and confirm your profile updates.
Android (Discord app)
Android presence can be inconsistent for certain apps. If it doesn’t show, desktop presence is the most dependable workaround.

Common Reasons Games Don’t Show Up
When game presence fails, it’s rarely a single cause. Here are the most common patterns users run into in 2024.
- Game Activity is disabled in User Settings → Game Activity.
- Discord permissions (background access / activity detection) are restricted.
- Running the wrong process (launchers or sandboxes can confuse detection).
- Using a VPN or privacy tool that interferes with Discord’s connection.
- Outdated Discord client or a stuck session (common after power sleep/wake).
- Server-side availability issues (rare, but status updates can lag).
- Non-supported titles (emulators, older clients, some launchers).
Troubleshooting Checklist (What to Try When It Fails)
Use this in order. Each step is designed to fix a specific failure mode without wasting time.
- Confirm the status toggle: open User Settings → Game Activity and confirm it’s enabled.
- Restart Discord: fully quit the desktop app, reopen, then launch the game again.
- Restart the game: close the game completely (including launchers) and relaunch.
- Remove and reconnect the integration: if using Steam/Battle.net, disconnect in Connections and reconnect.
- Try a different game: test with a mainstream title first. If others work, the original game may not be supported.
- Check for launcher conflicts: if the game runs via EA app / Ubisoft Connect / similar, try launching from the main launcher interface.
- Check background/permission settings on your device (especially macOS). Restricting background activity can break presence updates.
- Disable overlays temporarily (recorders, streaming overlays) and re-test. Overlays sometimes interfere with game focus signals.
- Switch clients: if you’re on browser, test on the desktop app. Presence detection is more reliable there.
- Clear stuck session (advanced but effective): sign out of Discord, then sign back in. If that doesn’t work, reboot the computer and retry.
Security and Privacy Considerations
Linking game accounts connects identities across services. That can be useful, but you should understand what you’re granting.
- Only connect accounts you control and recognize.
- If you’re unsure, link one service (like Steam) first, test presence, then link additional accounts.
- For shared devices, be careful: your profile “Playing …” status can reveal what you’re playing even to people you don’t intend to inform.
Alternatives: Display Without Official Integration
If your goal is mainly to share what you’re doing with friends (not necessarily accurate presence), you have a few options that don’t depend on Discord’s game detection.

Use server activities and bots (when available)
Many servers offer activities, game nights, or bot-powered events. Those are server-specific and don’t require “adding games” to your global Discord presence, but they can be a better fit for community play.
FAQs
Why does Discord show nothing when I’m playing?
Most commonly, Game Activity is disabled, the game is launched through a launcher Discord can’t detect, or your app session is stuck. Restart Discord and the game first, then confirm User Settings → Game Activity is enabled.
Can I add a game that isn’t installed on my PC?
Not in the sense of “adding it as playing.” Discord presence is based on running games and account integrations. If the game isn’t launching, Discord can’t detect it as “Playing.”
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDoes linking Steam automatically make every game show up?
Linking Steam helps with recognition, but it still depends on whether Discord can detect the game while it’s running. Some titles and launch workflows may still not populate reliably.
Can I hide my game activity?
Yes. Turn off the relevant toggle in User Settings → Game Activity, or set a different custom status. You can also manage who sees your activity via Discord’s privacy settings.
Is there a way to force Discord to display a specific game?
There’s no fully reliable “manual select any game as playing” feature for every title. The closest solutions are enabling detection, connecting accounts, and using workarounds like restarting the client or testing with the desktop app.
Bottom Line
To add games to Discord in 2024, focus on Game Activity (automatic detection) and use Connections to link your Steam/Battle.net/console accounts for better coverage. Most “it’s not showing” problems fix themselves with a client restart, a reconnect, or launching the game in a way Discord can detect.
Recommended Free Tools
If your game still won’t appear after the troubleshooting checklist, assume it’s either unsupported for Rich Presence or blocked by launcher/emulator workflow—and use a custom status or server event options instead.
