To add a Bootstrap toast, place its markup and a persistent live region in your page, load Bootstrap’s JavaScript, then initialize the toast and call show() when the user triggers it. Bootstrap v5.3 documentation currently identifies the release as v5.3.8; “2026” is the article’s year, not a Bootstrap version. Check the version installed in your project before using these examples.
What a Bootstrap toast does
A toast is a lightweight notification that appears temporarily without moving keyboard focus. Bootstrap supplies markup and utilities for basic, customized, positioned, and stacked notifications. Its toast documentation says: “Toasts are opt-in for performance reasons, so you must initialize them yourself.” Bootstrap v5.3 toast documentation

The examples below use Bootstrap 5.3 conventions. Bootstrap 5 changed toast placement to use a .toast-container with positioning utilities, and set the default duration to five seconds; older v4 examples may not match this pattern. Bootstrap v5 migration notes
Build a toast with a trigger button
Put the live region in the page before any notification is generated or updated. The toast can start hidden; Bootstrap’s JavaScript displays it when you call show().

<script>
const toastElement = document.getElementById('noticeToast');
const toast = bootstrap.Toast.getOrCreateInstance(toastElement);
document.getElementById('showToast').addEventListener('click', () => {
toast.show();
});
</script>
This assumes Bootstrap’s JavaScript bundle is loaded before the script that uses bootstrap.Toast. If the project uses a build system, import the Toast plugin according to that setup instead. Do not load both the full bootstrap.js and bootstrap.min.js. Bootstrap v5.3 JavaScript guidance
Position one toast or stack several
Use a container with Bootstrap position utilities to place notifications relative to the viewport. The example places the container at the top right and adds padding so the toast does not touch the edge. Change the position utilities to move it, for example to the bottom or start side. Bootstrap’s examples also show stacking by putting multiple toast elements inside one .toast-container. Bootstrap positioning and stacking examples

For a single toast, CSS and utility classes can control its placement; a container is especially useful when several notifications should share a position and stack together. Choose the location based on the surrounding interface rather than assuming one placement is universally best.

Bootstrap’s Toast options are animation, autohide, and delay. In the v5.3 documentation, animation and auto-hide default to true, while the auto-hide delay defaults to 5,000 milliseconds. These are API defaults, not a recommended duration for every message. Bootstrap Toast options
Rank #3
- Auto-hide: Keep the default behavior when the message is brief and does not require a response. Set a longer delay if readers need more time to read it.
- Manual dismissal: Set
autohide: falsefor a message that should remain until the user closes it. You can configure this in JavaScript or with thedata-bs-autohideattribute. Callhide()yourself when your application should remove it.
For example, JavaScript options use camel case, while data attributes use kebab case:
const toast = new bootstrap.Toast(toastElement, {
autohide: false,
animation: true
});
// Equivalent option names in markup:
// data-bs-autohide="false" data-bs-animation="true"
Bootstrap documents show, hide, and transition events. A method call begins the transition and returns before it finishes, so code that depends on the completed visual change should use the corresponding event rather than assuming the transition has ended immediately. Make notifications usable with assistive technology
Use a live region that already exists before the toast content changes. Bootstrap recommends aria-atomic="true" so assistive technology announces the full toast as a unit; choose an appropriate aria-live value for the message’s urgency. Adding the live region and toast simultaneously may prevent the announcement. Do not use a transient toast for information necessary to complete a task, such as form errors: Bootstrap recommends an alert for that purpose. Bootstrap toast accessibility guidance

Account for framework-based applications
Bootstrap warns that its JavaScript plugins manipulate the DOM and are not fully compatible with frameworks such as React, Vue, and Angular. In those applications, consider a framework-specific package or integration rather than letting Bootstrap’s plugin and the framework independently manage the same element.
