With Radix Dialog, CSS keyframe animations can delay unmount automatically. With Motion or another JavaScript animation library, give that library control of the exit lifecycle and use Radix’s forceMount where Radix would otherwise remove a part too soon.
The key is to separate “the dialog is no longer open” from “the exiting element has been removed.” That distinction lets the dialog close promptly for interaction and accessibility while its pixels finish animating.

Why a dialog disappears before its exit animation
A conditional render such as {open && <Dialog.Content />} removes the content as soon as open becomes false. Once React removes the node, its own CSS animation cannot play: there is no element left to animate. A CSS transition has the same basic problem if the element is removed before the transition can run.

An exit animation therefore needs a presence mechanism. Something must keep the element in the DOM after the open state changes, then remove it when the animation completes. That “something” can be the dialog primitive’s built-in presence handling or an animation library such as Motion’s AnimatePresence.

Do not treat this as a reason to leave the dialog logically open until the animation ends. The dialog should respond to close immediately; only the exiting visual representation needs to linger. Separating those responsibilities avoids tying interaction state to animation duration.
It helps to think of closing as two related but distinct events. The first is a state change: the dialog is no longer open, so close behavior and open-state interaction should end. The second is DOM removal: the visual layer can remain briefly while its exit effect completes. An implementation that has only one event—set state to false and remove the entire subtree—has no opportunity to show an exit.
Before changing code, identify exactly what disappears: the content, the overlay, the portal, or an ancestor containing all of them. The exit lifecycle has to retain the node that is actually animated. Keeping a parent rendered does not help if the animated child is still conditionally removed without a presence manager; conversely, a presence manager cannot retain a child if the manager itself disappears at the same time.
Choose who owns the unmount timing
| Approach | Who retains the exiting DOM? | Good fit | Main integration concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radix with CSS keyframes | Radix observes the CSS animation and delays unmount while it plays. | A straightforward open/closed fade or similar effect. | Use animation rules for Radix’s open and closed states; do not assume a plain CSS transition gets the same documented unmount behavior. |
| Radix with Motion | Motion’s AnimatePresence retains its removed child while that child runs its exit animation. |
More involved choreography or a project already using Motion for presence and animation. | Keep the presence boundary mounted and use Radix forceMount on parts Motion must retain. |
Radix’s Animation guide describes CSS keyframes as the simple option and documents that CSS animations can suspend unmount until completion. It also explains that JavaScript animation libraries need control of the unmounting phase, which is why Radix exposes forceMount on supported parts. The Dialog API search result identified version 1.2.0; check the API for the version installed in your project because component APIs can change.
The practical choice is not “CSS is always better” or “JavaScript is always smoother.” Ask three questions: Which system should own removal timing? How much choreography does the effect need? How much integration work is appropriate for the dialog primitive already in use? If the effect is a simple fade or similar keyframe-based transition, Radix’s CSS lifecycle keeps the implementation close to its open and closed state. If Motion needs to coordinate several animated elements or the project already uses Motion presence, use a Motion-owned exit and make the handoff explicit.
Choose one removal owner for a given animated part. Radix can keep a CSS-animated part present through its own lifecycle; Motion can retain a removed child through its presence lifecycle. Leaving both systems to independently decide when the same node goes away makes it harder to reason about which animation will finish and which component is responsible for final removal.
Use CSS keyframes for the simplest Radix exit
Let the dialog’s open state drive Radix’s lifecycle. Style the state attributes Radix supplies, rather than conditionally removing the portal, overlay, or content as soon as the state becomes closed.

Here, .DialogOverlay and .DialogContent are example class names; assign them to the corresponding Radix parts in your own component. The durations and easing are illustrative, not required values. Give both parts an exit animation if both should remain visible during the close.
The important lifecycle is: the dialog enters the closed state, the closed-state keyframes play, then Radix removes the element when the animation ends. Radix documents this behavior for CSS animations. A transition that merely changes a property between open and closed styles is not interchangeable for this purpose: the documented unmount suspension is tied to an animation completing.

Avoid wrapping the Radix part in an outer condition that disappears at the same time as open. For example, if the parent stops rendering the portal when open becomes false, Radix cannot retain the content to finish its closed-state animation. Keep the dialog structure rendered and let Radix’s own presence behavior observe the state change.
Coordinate overlay and content
Give the overlay and content compatible exit durations so the backdrop does not vanish while the panel is still fading, or remain after the panel has disappeared. They may use different effects—such as fading the overlay and fading plus translating the content—but decide deliberately which element finishes last. The rendered dialog is a composition of both layers, so their timing determines what the user sees.
For example, a fade on the overlay and a fade-plus-translation on the panel can still be coordinated as one close. The two parts do not have to use identical keyframes, but each part that should remain visible needs an exit rule. If the panel is animated while the overlay is immediately removed, the page can look as if the dialog vanished in pieces. If the overlay lasts longer than the content, the user may see a backdrop with no panel. Those outcomes are timing decisions, not a reason to delay the logical close state.
Use Radix’s state attributes as the connection between dialog state and CSS: the documented values are open and closed. Check that both selectors match the elements rendered by your component. A misspelled class, a selector attached to a wrapper instead of the actual part, or a parent condition that removes the part can make a correct-looking keyframe rule ineffective.
Use Motion when JavaScript should own exit presence
Motion’s documented pattern is an always-rendered AnimatePresence boundary around a conditional child that has an exit target. When that child is removed from the React tree, Motion retains it until its exit animation completes. The direct child needs a stable, unique key.
<AnimatePresence>
{open && (
<motion.div
key="dialog"
initial={{ opacity: 0 }}
animate={{ opacity: 1 }}
exit={{ opacity: 0 }}
>
{/* dialog layer */}
</motion.div>
)}
</AnimatePresence>
This is the presence pattern, not a complete Radix integration. In a Radix dialog, Radix also has a presence lifecycle and normally decides when its parts mount and unmount. If Radix removes an overlay or content before Motion can animate it, Motion cannot bring that DOM back. Use forceMount on the relevant Radix parts so they remain available, and let Motion’s presence boundary decide when the animated child leaves.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep AnimatePresence outside the condition that removes its child. If the boundary itself is rendered only while open is true, closing removes both the boundary and the child in one render; Motion has no retained boundary to manage the exit. The animated child also needs a stable key. A changing key or a list index used as a key can make Motion treat the element as a different child rather than the same child exiting.
The key identifies the logical child across renders. If it changes every render, Motion may see a replacement rather than the same dialog transitioning from present to removed. A stable unique key lets the presence boundary recognize which child has left and should be retained for its exit. For a single dialog, use an identity that remains stable for that dialog; do not use a render-time value or an unstable list index.
Keep the parts in sync
A dialog usually has at least an overlay and content. Apply the exit behavior to every part that should remain visible, or coordinate them beneath a retained animated parent. If only the panel is retained while the overlay disappears immediately, the close may look abrupt even though the panel itself animates.

For nested presence boundaries, do not assume an inner exit will automatically run when an ancestor is removed. Motion documents that nested exit animations do not automatically propagate unless configured to do so. Structure the boundaries so the component that is being removed remains within the presence mechanism responsible for its exit.

Radix’s Motion integration guidance discusses forceMount for this handoff. Treat it as an ownership choice: Radix still reports whether the dialog is open, but Motion determines when the mounted visual parts are finally removed. Avoid having both systems independently control the same removal moment.
Think through the boundary from the outside in. The presence boundary must stay mounted; its direct animated child must have an exit target and stable key; and the Radix parts needed for that child’s animation must not be removed first by Radix’s default presence timing. Use forceMount on the relevant supported parts, not as a substitute for setting up Motion’s presence boundary. The prop makes those parts available for the animation system to manage; it does not itself define an exit animation.
Do not apply the handoff only to the content if the overlay is also expected to animate. Conversely, if the overlay is intentionally meant to disappear immediately, make that a deliberate visual choice and verify that it does not undermine the intended effect. Coordinate the retained parts so their exit sequence has a clear end point and the closed dialog is eventually removed.
Preserve dialog behavior while the pixels exit
An element that remains on screen briefly is not necessarily still an open dialog. Radix documents dialog state attributes and behavior such as modal and non-modal modes, focus management, Escape-to-close, and title and description support. Its implementation distinguishes a closed-but-animating modal from an open one for focus trapping and outside pointer-event handling. The visual exit should not accidentally extend the active modal interaction.

- Check that focus returns to the trigger after closing and that the user can interact with the background at the expected time.
- Keep the accessible dialog title and description in the dialog structure while it is open; do not remove or replace them as a side effect of adding animation wrappers.
- Test the overlay and content together, including whether clicking the overlay or pressing Escape closes the dialog as intended.
- Test rapid open-close and close-reopen sequences. Confirm a previous exit cannot leave a stale layer behind or remove the newly opened dialog.
These checks matter especially with a JavaScript presence handoff: an animated node can still be visually present after the dialog’s state is closed, so verify both the visible result and the dialog’s interaction behavior.
In a modal dialog, focus handling and outside pointer behavior are part of the interaction contract, not decorative details. A visual remnant should not trap focus merely because it has not yet been removed, and the background should not remain blocked longer than intended. Radix’s implementation accounts for the closed-but-animating state when handling focus trapping and outside pointer events; still, test the actual integration, especially when a separate animation library owns the visual node’s final removal.
Also distinguish an accessible dialog from an animation wrapper. Keep the dialog primitive’s title and description support intact when adding an outer Motion element or other wrapper. The animation structure should not replace the semantic dialog structure or make its identifying text disappear while the dialog is open. Test with the close control and Escape, then confirm focus returns to the trigger and that background interaction matches whether the dialog is modal or non-modal.
Diagnose the common failure cases
The dialog vanishes instantly
Look for an ancestor condition that removes the portal or dialog subtree at the same time as the open state changes. If you use CSS, make sure the closed-state keyframe applies to the Radix part and that the part is allowed to remain in the tree for the animation. If you use Motion, verify that the child is conditionally removed inside a still-rendered AnimatePresence boundary and that Radix is not unmounting it first.

The exit runs once but not on later closes
Check the animated child’s key and render structure. Motion needs the same logical child to transition from present to removed, identified by a stable unique key. An unstable key can make React and Motion interpret each render as a different element, which disrupts presence tracking.
The backdrop and panel finish at different times
Inspect each part’s exit rule and duration. Ensure both are retained by the same intended lifecycle, or coordinate them under a parent whose exit completes only after the effect you want to preserve. A mismatch may be intentional, but it should not come from one part being removed by Radix while another is retained by Motion.
A nested animation is cut off
Determine which presence boundary owns the child being removed. If an ancestor’s removal also removes an inner AnimatePresence, the inner exit will not necessarily propagate. Keep the relevant boundary outside the conditional removal or configure propagation as described by Motion.
Focus or background interaction feels delayed
Do not solve a visual timing problem by keeping the dialog’s logical open state true for the full animation. Confirm that the state changes to closed immediately and that only the visual node is retained. Then test focus return and background interaction against the intended modal behavior.
The CSS exit never seems to finish
Check whether the closed-state selector actually matches the overlay or content after the state changes. Also confirm that the element has a CSS keyframe animation rather than only a transition. Radix’s documented CSS unmount suspension is tied to CSS animation completion; it should not be assumed for a plain transition. If the part is removed by an outer condition before the closed state can apply, the selector and keyframes cannot help.
The Motion child remains after its animation
Check which component owns final removal and whether the presence boundary is still tracking the child that should exit. Motion can retain a removed child during its exit, but Radix’s forceMount means Radix is not automatically removing that part as it normally would. The JavaScript animation system needs to be the deliberate owner of that final removal. Review the wrapper hierarchy and keys before adding more state or delaying the dialog’s close.
Implementation checklist
- Pick one removal owner. Use Radix presence for CSS keyframes, or hand visual removal to Motion when its JavaScript animation lifecycle is needed.
- Keep the necessary tree rendered. Remove any parent condition that destroys the whole Radix subtree before its close animation can run.
- For the CSS route, define both states. Apply open and closed keyframe animations to overlay and content, with durations that produce the intended coordinated exit.
- For the Motion route, retain the boundary. Keep
AnimatePresencemounted outside the conditional child, give that child a stable unique key, and use RadixforceMountwhere necessary. - Verify behavior, not just appearance. Test close via Escape and the close control, focus return, background interaction, reopening during an exit, and overlay/content synchronization.
A useful review order is to start with state and ownership, then inspect the DOM boundary, then inspect the animation. First confirm that the dialog state becomes closed immediately. Next identify which component retains each animated part. Then verify the right state selector or Motion exit target applies. Finish by checking that the visual layers finish together and that interaction has not been kept open merely to make the animation visible.
Documentation to check
Radix UI’s “Animation – Radix Primitives” guide covers CSS animation-based unmount suspension and forceMount. Its “Dialog – Radix Primitives” API reference describes dialog state and behavior; the search result available for that API identified version 1.2.0. Motion’s “AnimatePresence | React exit animations” guide covers the retained boundary, keys, exit handling, and nested propagation. Motion’s “Radix: How to Add Animations to Radix” explains the forceMount integration. Match those instructions to the versions actually installed in your app.
For Radix, the API reference documents state attributes for open and closed, modal and non-modal behavior, Escape handling, focus callbacks, and forceMount on supported parts such as the portal, overlay, and content. The exact installed version matters: the cited Dialog API result identified version 1.2.0, but projects can use other versions. Check the current package documentation and the API that your installed components expose rather than assuming a prop or lifecycle detail is identical across versions.
Best Value
Motion’s AnimatePresence documentation is the place to verify how the mounted boundary, direct child key, exit target, and nested propagation work in the version you use. Its Radix integration guide addresses the handoff when Radix would otherwise control mounting. Together, these guides answer the core implementation question: let one lifecycle retain the exiting node, and ensure the other system does not remove it before the exit can finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my React dialog disappear before the exit animation?
The dialog or an ancestor is being removed as soon as its open state becomes false. Once the node leaves the DOM, its own animation cannot continue. Keep the relevant part present through Radix’s CSS animation lifecycle or retain the child inside a mounted Motion AnimatePresence boundary.
Can I use a CSS transition instead of a keyframe animation with Radix?
Radix documents suspending unmount while a CSS animation plays. Do not assume a plain CSS transition receives the same unmount behavior. For the documented CSS route, provide open- and closed-state keyframe animations on the parts that need to exit.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen should I use Radix forceMount?
Use it when a JavaScript animation library such as Motion needs to control the mounting and unmounting of a Radix part that Radix would otherwise remove first. Apply it to the relevant parts and let the library’s presence lifecycle own their final removal; forceMount does not supply the exit animation by itself.
Where should AnimatePresence go?
Keep it rendered outside the condition that removes its animated child. If the boundary and child disappear together, Motion cannot retain the child for its exit. Give the direct animated child a stable, unique key.
Why does Motion not run an exit animation for a nested dialog element?
An inner AnimatePresence removed with an ancestor does not automatically propagate nested exits. Keep the responsible boundary mounted around the child being removed or configure propagation as Motion documents.
Should I keep the dialog’s open state true until the animation ends?
No. Let the dialog close through its normal state path, then retain only the visual node needed for the exit. Keeping the logical state open can extend modal interaction when the dialog should already be closed. Verify focus return and background interaction as well as the visual effect.

For a simple Radix dialog exit, keep the dialog structure rendered and use open- and closed-state CSS keyframe animations so Radix can delay unmount until the animation completes. If Motion needs to own exit timing, keep AnimatePresence mounted, key its child stably, and use Radix forceMount where needed. In either approach, close the dialog’s logical state promptly, coordinate overlay and content, and test focus and background interaction—not just whether the fade looks right.
