What an SMS status tells your application
SMS delivery is asynchronous. Twilio documents statuses including queued, sending, sent, delivered, undelivered, and failed. In Twilio’s status descriptions, sent means updated delivery information is not available; delivered reflects confirmation received from the carrier and, where available, the destination handset. These statuses are not interchangeable. See Twilio’s SMS and MMS status descriptions.

Twilio Messaging Services can send status and error information asynchronously to a configured status callback URL. They also support a configurable validity period for outbound messages. Design the handler to validate incoming requests according to Twilio’s current guidance, tolerate duplicate or delayed callbacks, and update a stored attempt rather than assuming events arrive once or in a fixed order. Idempotent reconciliation is an implementation recommendation, not a guarantee about callback ordering. See Twilio Messaging Services documentation.

Persist the signup and each attempt
Write the signup event and notification intent to durable storage before calling a provider. Give the intent a stable ID and associate separate SMS and email attempt records with it. Store provider identifiers, timestamps, initial responses, status changes, and relevant error details. This makes retries and asynchronous callbacks reconcilable even if a process restarts between sending a message and recording its response.
#1 Best Overall
Before sending, check that the supplied phone number and email address are usable and apply the product’s consent and notification-preference rules. Requirements vary by audience and geography; verify the applicable rules, sender requirements, destination coverage, and regional restrictions with current official sources before deployment.
Choose an explicit email fallback rule
Do not trigger email merely because an SMS API call returned successfully. Decide which event should cause fallback, record that decision, and prevent unrelated or delayed events from generating duplicate alerts.
Rank #2
- Terminal SMS failure: Send email when the provider reports a failure state your product treats as final.
- No delivery confirmation by a deadline: Send email if the attempt has not reached the chosen confirmation state by a defined time. This addresses an unknown outcome, not proof that SMS failed.
- Other product-specific rule: Define the statuses and timing that qualify, and document how they interact with retries and message expiry.
Define which statuses count as terminal for your product. Avoid parallel SMS and email unless the experience deliberately calls for both; otherwise, delayed status changes or retries can produce duplicate or stale notifications.
Give urgent notifications a useful lifetime
Set an application-level deadline for each alert. Twilio SendGrid says it retries a deferred email for up to 72 hours; deferral may reflect a temporary issue or recipient-side throttling, rather than a permanent failure. That provider-specific retry period may exceed the time when an urgent signup alert is useful. Track the email attempt and its provider events, and decide what should happen when the alert’s usefulness expires. See Twilio SendGrid’s deferral documentation.
Rank #3
Keep distinct records for provider acceptance, deferral, final delivery reports, and user engagement. A delivery report does not establish that the recipient read the message, and a deferred email should not be described as permanently failed.
Implement the workflow in Node.js
- Persist intent: Save the signup, notification intent, stable intent ID, and deadline before contacting either provider.
- Validate inputs and preferences: Confirm usable contact details and apply consent and preference rules for the actual audience and geography.
- Send SMS first: Store the provider’s message identifier and initial response as an attempt. Label the result as accepted or pending as appropriate—not as proof the person was notified.
- Process status callbacks: Validate callback requests using current provider guidance; update the matching attempt idempotently and retain status history needed for reconciliation.
- Evaluate fallback: Apply the chosen terminal-failure or deadline rule. Check the intent’s state and lifetime before creating an email attempt.
- Track email separately: Record the email provider’s response and subsequent events without collapsing acceptance, deferral, delivery, or engagement into one success flag.
- Monitor operations: Monitor callback endpoint health, pending attempts, sustained delivery failures, missing status events, and unexpected growth in retries or pending work.
Twilio SendGrid provides a Mail Send API quickstart for Node.js. Its listed prerequisites include a SendGrid account, a properly scoped API key, domain authentication, and Node.js; these are SendGrid-specific setup requirements, not universal requirements for every email provider.

What email delivery reports can and cannot confirm
Nodemailer can request SMTP Delivery Status Notifications (DSNs), but the SMTP server must advertise the DSN extension for those options to take effect. Support may vary by provider, so do not make an SMTP DSN the universal basis for fallback or promise inbox, delivery, or read confirmation. Use the events your selected email provider actually supports. See Nodemailer’s DSN documentation.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When Amazon SNS fits—and where direct email is limited
Amazon SNS may suit an AWS-native alert workflow, but evaluate protocol-specific retries and operational behavior against the customer-facing requirements. AWS documents retry policies that vary by protocol; after retries are exhausted, messages can be discarded unless a dead-letter queue is attached to the subscription. Direct SNS email subscriptions are documented for internal system alerts. AWS also documents constraints relevant to customer-facing signup notifications: message bodies cannot be customized, throughput is throttled, and handling includes subscription suspension and bounce suppression.
Compare SNS with a transactional email API when you need control over customer-facing content or provider event detail. Check the current behavior for the deployed region, protocol, and account configuration. See AWS documentation on SNS message delivery retries and SNS email subscriptions.
Quick Recap
Compare providers against the notification’s actual needs
| Decision area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Status semantics | Whether a status proves request acceptance, carrier handoff, confirmed delivery, or only an unknown outcome. |
| Event delivery | Which asynchronous status and error events are available, and how delayed or duplicate events can be reconciled. |
| Retry and message lifetime | Which failures are retried, for how long, and whether outbound messages can expire. |
| Fallback control | Whether your application can enforce its own deadline and prevent stale email after the alert is no longer useful. |
| Email capabilities | Support for customer-facing content, bounce and deferral reporting, and the required authentication setup. |
| Geography and sender rules | Destination coverage, sender registration, consent requirements, and regional restrictions for the intended deployment. |
