The simplest way to add dark mode to the WordPress admin dashboard is to install and activate a plugin, then enable its setting or use its admin-bar toggle. Before choosing one, check whether it styles only dashboard screens or also the Block Editor, Site Editor, Classic Editor, and the plugin pages you rely on.
Choose the kind of dark mode you need
WordPress admin screens, the editor canvas, the login screen, and third-party plugin pages are separate compatibility questions. A plugin that darkens the dashboard does not necessarily style all of them. The descriptions below reflect what each plugin’s WordPress.org listing says; they are not results of hands-on testing.

- Per-user switching: Look for a toggle or a preference each user can set.
- Editor styling: Check specifically for the Block Editor (Gutenberg), Site Editor, or Classic Editor you use.
- Plugin screens: Check whether the plugin describes styling for third-party admin pages, and verify your own essential screens after activation.
- Site-wide appearance: These options concern wp-admin or administrative color schemes; they do not automatically add dark mode to your public-facing website.

- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New and search for an admin dark-mode plugin. Alternatively, use the installation route documented by that plugin’s listing.
- Install the plugin and select Activate.
- Follow the plugin’s own setup instructions. For Dark Mode for WP Dashboard, the listing describes switching with a toggle in the admin bar and choosing a per-user Dark, Light, or Auto preference. For DarkAdmin, it says to open Settings → DarkAdmin and enable the feature.
- Sign in as the relevant user and check the dashboard, editor, and important third-party plugin pages. A successful change to the dashboard alone does not establish that every admin screen is covered.
Check the editor and plugin screens
After enabling dark mode, inspect the parts of wp-admin where you spend time. The editor canvas can remain light even when surrounding dashboard controls are dark, and a third-party plugin may use its own styles. The listings for Dark Mode for WP Dashboard and Mawu describe particular editor support; DarkAdmin describes optional automatic darkening for some areas its built-in stylesheet does not cover. Treat those as vendor claims, not guarantees for every theme, plugin, or custom admin page.

If an essential screen is hard to read or looks inconsistent, revisit the plugin’s options, try another listed option with more relevant stated coverage, or turn the dark styling off for that workflow. Do not assume a setting that changes an admin color scheme will restyle every piece of admin content.

WordPress user profiles offer admin color-scheme choices, and the Default Admin Color Scheme plugin listing describes setting a default scheme with an option to force it for users. That can help standardize the administrative scheme, but the listing does not claim that it provides complete dark styling across all dashboard content. Users retain their own profile choice unless the force option is enabled.
