To add a custom header to a screenshot request, use the screenshot provider’s documented option for headers sent by its remote browser to the page being captured. Do not assume that a header used to authenticate your request to the screenshot API will be forwarded to the target website; those are separate requests with separate credentials.
Separate API authentication from headers for the captured page
A screenshot API call involves two distinct HTTP interactions: your client sends a request to the screenshot service, and the service’s browser loads the target page. A key or Authorization header on the first interaction authenticates you with the screenshot service. To make the captured page receive a header, configure the provider’s rendering option for target-page headers.

For example, a service may document an API key for authenticating the capture request and a separate headers option for headers sent while loading the target URL. One does not imply the other. Screenshot API documentation that shows Authorization: Bearer ... or X-API-Key for service authentication does not, by itself, establish support for forwarding those headers to the rendered page. Find your provider’s header format
There is no universal parameter name, encoding, or forwarding scope. Follow the documentation for the specific provider and request method; do not copy one service’s syntax into another’s request.

These examples are documented formats, not interchangeable conventions. Before implementing, check the current official reference for your provider’s parameter spelling, GET or POST support, encoding, and header forwarding scope.
Configure headers without exposing credentials unnecessarily
- Identify the target URL and the exact header the page requires, such as an application-specific token or request ID.
- Find the screenshot provider’s option for headers sent to the target page. Keep it separate from the credential used to authenticate your screenshot API request.
- Encode the option exactly as documented for the route you are using. A semicolon-delimited, URL-encoded query parameter is not equivalent to a JSON object in a POST body.
- Check whether headers apply only to the target URL’s origin or also to redirects and subrequests. Enable additional origins or subrequest forwarding only when the documented behavior requires it.
- Make a controlled capture and inspect whether the page rendered as expected. This is an implementation check, not proof that every redirect or resource received the header.
When a header contains a token or other sensitive value, limit it to the origin that needs it and use the provider’s forwarding controls. Origin-scoping guidance is documented by HTML/CSS to Image; do not infer that credentials are safe to forward broadly.

Common problems and fixes
- The target page still asks you to sign in: Check that the header is configured as a target-page rendering option, not only as screenshot-service authentication.
- The request is rejected or the header is missing: Verify the documented parameter name, value encoding, and whether your selected GET or POST route accepts it. Provider formats differ.
- The main page works but images or scripts do not: Check whether the provider forwards headers to subrequests and whether a separate option must enable that behavior.
- A redirect leads to a page that does not receive the header: Check the provider’s documented origin and redirect rules. Do not assume a header is forwarded to a different origin.
- Credentials appear in the wrong place: Separate the screenshot API credential from the target-page credential, and avoid placing sensitive values in a URL unless the provider’s documented method requires it and you have accounted for URL logging and exposure.
What to compare before choosing an API
If target-page headers are central to your workflow, compare the provider’s input option and encoding, supported request methods, whether headers reach only the main document or also subresources, and how redirects or additional origins are handled. Also confirm that target-page credentials remain distinct from the credentials used to call the screenshot service. The documented services above differ in input shape and forwarding controls; those details should not be generalized to other providers.
