Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo add CSS to a specific frame, get its Puppeteer Frame object and call frame.addStyleTag({ content: cssText }). For an iframe, do not use page.addStyleTag() unless you mean to style the page’s main frame: that method is a shortcut for page.mainFrame().addStyleTag().
Find the frame you want to style
Puppeteer exposes the current frame tree through page.frames(), page.mainFrame() and each frame’s childFrames(). Find the intended frame using a property that identifies it reliably, such as its URL or name. The example below matches a URL substring; replace it with a condition that fits your page.

const frame = page.frames().find(frame =>
frame.url().includes('/embedded-content')
);
if (!frame) {
throw new Error('Target frame was not found');
}
await frame.addStyleTag({
content: `
body {
background: #f5f5f5;
}
.notice {
color: #174ea6;
}
`,
});
The Puppeteer Frame API describes frames as potentially nested, like iframe elements. Code running in one frame does not automatically affect a frame nested inside it. If the document you need to style belongs to a nested frame, select that frame rather than its parent.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Inspect frame names or traverse children
If URL matching is not sufficient, inspect the frame tree or the element associated with a frame. Puppeteer’s Frame API demonstrates reading a frame element’s name attribute and then using a selector within that frame.

function printFrames(frame, depth = 0) {
console.log(' '.repeat(depth * 2), frame.url());
for (const child of frame.childFrames()) {
printFrames(child, depth + 1);
}
}
printFrames(page.mainFrame());
Use this kind of inspection to identify the right frame before injecting CSS; avoid relying on array position if the page can add or reorder frames.
Choose how to provide the stylesheet
Frame.addStyleTag() accepts CSS content, a local file path or a stylesheet URL. Await the call so the style or link element is inserted before the next step that depends on it. The API returns a handle to the inserted element: a <style> for content or path, and a <link> for a URL.

| Option | Example | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
content |
await frame.addStyleTag({ content: 'body { color: navy; }' }); |
You have short, generated or inline CSS. |
path |
await frame.addStyleTag({ path: './styles/frame.css' }); |
You want to load a local CSS file. A relative path resolves from Node.js process.cwd(). |
url |
await frame.addStyleTag({ url: 'https://example.test/frame.css' }); |
You want Puppeteer to add a link to a remote stylesheet. |
These options are documented in FrameAddStyleTagOptions and Frame.addStyleTag(). If you use path, check the process working directory rather than assuming the path is relative to the JavaScript file.
Use evaluate() for custom insertion logic
For routine injection, addStyleTag() is the direct stylesheet API. If you need custom DOM logic, frame.evaluate() runs in that frame’s context, where you can create and append a style element:

await frame.evaluate(() => {
const style = document.createElement('style');
style.textContent = 'body { color: navy; }';
document.head.append(style);
});
See Puppeteer’s documentation for Frame.evaluate(). Calling evaluate() on the wrong frame has the same scope problem as calling the wrong style method: it will not target a sibling or nested frame for you.
Common problems and fixes
- The iframe looks unchanged: confirm you selected the frame that owns the document.
page.addStyleTag()affects the main frame; calladdStyleTag()on the target child frame instead. See Page.addStyleTag(). - The frame was not found: inspect
page.frames()and the tree frompage.mainFrame(). Make the matching condition specific to the actual frame URL or identity, and account for nested frames. - The local stylesheet cannot be loaded: verify the file exists relative to Node.js
process.cwd()when using a relativepath. - Later code runs before the CSS is inserted: await
frame.addStyleTag()before checking styles or capturing the page. - CSS injection runs in the wrong context:
Frame.evaluate()executes in the frame object on which it is called. Select the intended frame first.
