To add a looping background video in OBS Studio, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. For several clips, use a VLC Video source with a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Put the visual behind your performance camera, then check the composition, audio and loop in a preview before going live. Choose the kind of background you need
- One moving backdrop: Use an OBS Media Source for a single prepared video file.
- A sequence of moving visuals: Use an OBS VLC Video source and playlist. Keep shuffle off if the order matters.
- Rotating stills: OBS includes an Image Slideshow source. Its detailed timing and transition controls are not covered here, so check the current OBS documentation before relying on a particular control.
- A browser-based studio: StreamYard documents uploaded MP4 or GIF video backgrounds that loop without audio. Its help page describes custom uploads as a paid feature; check current plan terms before choosing it.
The key distinction is whether you want motion, multiple clips or still images—and whether your stream’s audio should come from a separate source. A background video that loops without audio does not provide the music track.
Set up a continuous video loop in OBS
Loop one local video
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene for your music stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then choose the local video file you want to use.
- Enable Loop in the source properties and confirm the change.
- In the Sources list, place the video below your camera and any foreground elements. OBS draws sources higher in the list over sources below them; arrange the list so the backdrop does not cover the performer.
Use a video you have permission to stream. Before the event, inspect the scene or make a short recording to check how the image is cropped, whether the restart is visually acceptable, and whether the intended music and microphone audio remain audible.
Loop a playlist of video clips
- Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the OBS scene, select + in Sources and choose VLC Video.
- Create or select the playlist, then add the local video files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle off when the clips need to play in a meaningful sequence.
- Position the source behind the camera and other foreground elements, then preview the sequence and its return to the beginning.
The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation distinguishes the VLC source from Media Source: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.”

Use a still-image slideshow
For a sequence of photographs, artwork or title cards rather than motion video, add OBS’s Image Slideshow source. Confirm its current controls in the OBS documentation before setting specific timing or transitions; those details are not established here.
Use a video background in StreamYard
In StreamYard’s studio, add a video background through the Brand/Media assets background controls and upload an MP4 or GIF. The video loops automatically and plays without audio, so route the music through the studio’s separate audio path. Check the scene before your music stream
- Layering: Confirm the backdrop sits behind the performer, lyrics and any other text. Keep the singer or musicians easy to see and words legible against the moving image.
- Framing: Check the preview for cropping and for important visual details falling outside the frame.
- Loop point: Watch the video restart or the playlist return to its first clip. If the transition is distracting, choose a different loop or adjust the sequence.
- Audio separation: Verify that the music and microphone are coming from the intended audio sources. StreamYard’s documented video background has no audio.
- Stability: Preview or record a short segment on the computer and connection you plan to use. This is a practical check, not a guarantee of live performance; the source documentation does not establish a machine or network performance advantage.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
Clear both the music and the visuals for streaming. That includes the underlying song and recording, a cover or devotional performance, photographs, animations and any stock footage. Giving credit does not by itself establish permission, and whether a particular work is cleared can depend on the rights holder, territory, channel and monetization status.

YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match can lead to a placeholder image, interruption or termination. YouTube also warns that even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.
