You can put the form in the post with a WordPress plugin’s shortcode or block, or embed a form from your email platform. Before publishing, test delivery, consent wording, and subscriber routing end to end.
What is a content upgrade?
A content upgrade is a bonus resource closely related to a specific article, offered in exchange for a reader’s email submission. Kit defines it as “a bonus resource you offer in exchange for a reader’s email address,” and describes it as one way to grow a list; that is Kit’s characterization, not a guaranteed result or a general conversion benchmark. A relevant offer might be a checklist that helps readers apply a tutorial, a worksheet, a template, a resource guide, an ebook, or bonus audio.

The value comes from the match: the resource should help with the task the reader came to the post to complete. A generic download is less clearly connected to the article and gives readers less reason to request it.
Choose the right WordPress post and bonus
Start with a post that already attracts readers
Use your site analytics to identify a post with meaningful existing interest, then check whether readers have a clear next step the article does not fully provide. Kit’s content-upgrade guide, dated August 5, 2026, recommends starting with a popular post and pairing it with a complementary bonus: Kit’s guide to content upgrades.

Make the bonus specific and useful
Build a resource readers can use immediately after reading. For example, a how-to article could offer a checklist of its steps; a planning article could offer a fill-in template. Checklists, templates, worksheets, resource guides, ebooks, and bonus audio are examples—not formats with established or guaranteed performance advantages.
Choose how WordPress will capture the email and deliver the file
There are two common workflows. A gated-download plugin puts a form in front of a file, while an email-platform form can make subscriber tagging and follow-up sequences the center of the process. A broader publisher tool such as Grow may suit a site that also wants other reader features. Compare the workflow you need rather than choosing on the word “free” or a feature list alone.

| What to compare | Questions to check |
|---|---|
| File and delivery | Does it support your format, such as PDF or ZIP? Is the file uploaded or hosted elsewhere, and how is access delivered? |
| Placement | Can you insert the form where needed with a shortcode, Gutenberg block, JavaScript or HTML embed, popup, or in-content widget? |
| Subscriber handling | Are addresses stored in WordPress, synchronized to your email service, tagged, or added to an automation or sequence? |
| Consent and privacy | Can you explain the purpose of collection clearly and configure any consent controls your workflow requires? |
| Limits and cost | Check file-count limits, analytics, integrations, and which functions require a paid tier. These terms can change; confirm them in the current listing. |
| Compatibility | Check current maintenance and compatibility with your WordPress version, theme, page builder, and integrations. |
Use a gated-download plugin for a file-first workflow
A gated-download plugin can put an email form before access to a resource and insert that form into a post. For example, the AcquisitionSuite listing describes gating PDFs, ebooks, checklists, videos, and other files, with shortcode or Gutenberg placement and optional synchronization with named email tools: AcquisitionSuite on WordPress.org.

The Email Gated Downloads listing describes PDF and ZIP delivery, shortcode placement, consent text, and download logs. It lists a free tier limited to one gated file, with additional files and analytics among premium features; check the current listing for up-to-date details: Email Gated Downloads on WordPress.org.

Use an email-platform form when subscriber follow-up is central
An email platform can own subscriber records and support tagging or automated follow-up while its form is embedded in WordPress. Kit’s guide documents JavaScript or raw HTML embedding and use of its WordPress plugin; the plugin listing describes forms that can add and tag subscribers or enroll them in sequences: Kit WordPress plugin listing. Confirm that the form and integration you choose support the specific file-delivery path you want.
Consider broader subscribe tools separately
Grow documents in-content subscribe forms and supplemental materials as part of a broader publisher toolset connected to Grow Publisher Portal. It may fit publishers who also want other reader features, but it is not necessarily a substitute for a dedicated file-gating workflow. See Grow’s quick-start guide and Grow’s WordPress plugin instructions.

Add the content upgrade to your WordPress post
- Select the post: Use your analytics to find a post with established reader interest and identify the next practical task its readers may want help with.
- Create the resource: Prepare a focused file—such as a checklist, template, or worksheet—that extends the post rather than repeating it.
- Set up capture and delivery: In your chosen plugin or email platform, configure the form, file, confirmation or delivery behavior, and the destination list, tag, or automation.
- Write clear form copy: Ask only for information needed for the workflow. Explain why you are collecting the address and what communications, if any, the reader is signing up to receive.
- Insert the form in context: Follow the product’s current instructions for its shortcode, Gutenberg block, or embed. Place it near the section of the post the bonus helps readers apply, so its connection to the article is apparent.
- Test the full experience: Submit a test address, confirm the expected file arrives or becomes available, and verify the submission reaches the intended list, tag, or sequence. Check confirmation and error states, then test the post on mobile and with your active theme and page builder.
- Recheck after updates: Back up your site and follow WordPress’s upgrade guidance when updating; afterward, verify that the form, integration, and delivery still work. See WordPress’s update documentation.
Handle consent and privacy deliberately
A request for an address to deliver a file does not, by itself, establish permission to send unrelated marketing. Make the form’s purpose plain, and use a separate or otherwise appropriate consent process for newsletter enrollment. Email Gated Downloads’ listing explicitly places responsibility for privacy and processing on the site owner: plugin listing and privacy information. This is practical guidance, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice; requirements depend on your audience and location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck compatibility before relying on the form
A form that works in the editor may not behave the same way on the live page. Test the published post using the active theme, page builder, and mobile layout. Grow’s WordPress-plugin instructions document an Elementor conflict for which manual script installation is the stated workaround; consult the current instructions if you use that combination: Grow’s WordPress plugin instructions.
Plugin features, maintenance, integrations, and pricing can change. Before adopting a plugin, check its current WordPress.org listing and confirm compatibility with your site and the email service you use.
