How to Add Closed Captions to Your YouTube Live Streams

YouTube live captions can be enabled automatically for eligible English streams or sent through an encoder or supported caption software. Here’s how to set up and troubleshoot each method.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can add captions to a YouTube live stream in two ways: turn on YouTube’s English automatic captions if your channel and stream are eligible, or send caption data through your encoder or supported captioning software. The right choice depends on your language, stream latency, and whether you need a captioner.

Choose a caption method

  • Try automatic captions for an English stream when the option is available and normal latency works for your event.
  • Send captions yourself when you need a supported captioning workflow, a captioner, or a language or setup that automatic captions do not cover.

YouTube’s live caption requirements say that captions must be sent to YouTube. That can mean embedded captions in the stream or a caption feed delivered through supported software. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe both paths.

Turn on YouTube’s automatic live captions

YouTube’s current help page describes live automatic captions as English-only, enabled for each stream rather than channel-wide, and rolling out to English channels. YouTube says rollout is gradual for channels with more than 1,000 subscribers; the option may not be available to every eligible-looking channel. Automatic captions also require normal latency, not low or ultra-low latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In YouTube, select Create > Go live.
  2. Select Stream in the left menu.
  3. In stream settings, turn on Closed captions.
  4. Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
  5. Select the video language. The current help instructions specify English.

If the setting is missing, check channel access and latency before changing other settings. Mobile streams may also be unable to use the feature when configured for low or ultra-low latency. See YouTube’s automatic captioning help for current availability details.

What automatic captions can and cannot do

Clear speech gives recognition a better chance, but YouTube warns that poor sound, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages can prevent captions from appearing or cause errors. Review captions where possible rather than assuming every word is correct.

Live automatic captions do not remain as the same caption track after the broadcast. YouTube generates captions for the video-on-demand version later, and those captions may differ from the live captions.

Send captions through an encoder with embedded 608/708

This route requires both a YouTube stream setting and an encoder configured to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. The setting alone does not create captions; the encoder must actually supply them.

  2. Open Settings > Setup.
  3. Turn on Closed captions, choose Embedded 608/708, and save.
  4. Configure the encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. Depending on the encoder and production, it may read a caption file or encode captions in real time.
  5. Test the stream in the Live Control Room and confirm captions appear before the event.

Use caption software and YouTube’s ingestion URL

For an event using supported caption software or a captioner, YouTube’s workflow uses a signed Captions Ingestion URL. YouTube’s instructions call for adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in Advanced settings for this setup. Each stream entry point can have one caption feed.

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the event’s settings and turn on Closed captions.
  2. Set the broadcast delay to 30 or 60 seconds in Advanced settings, following YouTube’s event instructions.
  3. Copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL and provide it to the captioner or supported caption software.
  4. Save the setup and test caption delivery before going live.

YouTube names these software options and minimum versions in its help documentation:

  • Confirm the selected caption source and, for automatic captions, the language.
  • For automatic captions, confirm the feature is available to the channel and that the stream uses normal latency.
  • For embedded captions, confirm the encoder is configured to send them—not merely that the YouTube setting is enabled.
  • For external software, verify that the captioner has the correct signed ingestion URL and that the feed is connected to the intended stream entry point.
  • Check intelligibility: reduce background noise and avoid speakers talking over one another where practical.

Troubleshoot captions that do not appear

Symptom or check Likely cause What to do
Automatic captions are not an available source The channel has not received access in the gradual rollout, or the stream does not meet the feature conditions. Check the channel’s eligibility and use normal latency. YouTube says the rollout is to English channels and is gradual for channels with more than 1,000 subscribers.
Automatic captions are selected but nothing appears Low or ultra-low latency, unsupported language, poor or unrecognized audio, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages. Use normal latency, verify English is selected, improve speech clarity, and reduce overlap. If the event needs another language or a different workflow, send captions through a supported method.
Embedded-caption setting is on, but there are no captions The encoder may not be sending embedded 608/708 caption data. Check the encoder’s caption configuration and confirm the stream output contains captions; the YouTube toggle by itself does not supply them.
Caption software is connected but the feed is absent The software may have the wrong signed URL, the feed may target another entry point, or the software may be blocked or misconfigured. Recheck the URL and stream entry point, verify the required delay and software compatibility, keep the system clock accurate, and check antivirus interference.
Archive captions differ from the live captions YouTube creates new captions for the video-on-demand version after the live stream. Review the archive captions separately; the live automatic caption track is not retained as-is.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your YouTube channel runs prerecorded videos as a 24/7 stream, StreamNeo can keep that uploaded-video stream running from the cloud; it does not caption speech or broadcast from a camera, so it is not a substitute for either caption method above. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo offers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and a first day free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
