Show readers who wrote a page with a clear byline, link that name to an accurate author profile, and—if your site uses structured data—make the article’s author markup match the visible byline. These steps help people understand who is responsible for the content; they do not guarantee higher rankings or a special search result.
1. Decide who the author is
Start with the authorship you can accurately show readers. A page may have one individual author, several individual co-authors, or an organization as its author. Make that choice before adding a byline or markup so the visible page and machine-readable information describe the same authorship.

- For one writer, use that person’s name.
- For co-authored work, show each author rather than combining several names into one author entry.
- For content authored by an organization, identify the organization as the author where appropriate.
2. Add a visible byline and link it to useful context
Place a readable byline where readers can readily find it, typically alongside the article heading or publication details. Link the author’s name to a relevant profile page when one exists. Google’s people-first content guidance asks: “Do pages carry a byline, where one might be expected?” It also asks whether bylines lead to information about authors’ backgrounds and the areas they write about. These are editorial self-assessment questions, not a promise of ranking gains. Google Search Central’s helpful-content guidance
3. Build an accurate author profile
Create a dedicated author page or use an About Me page whose primary focus is one person affiliated with the site. The profile should give readers relevant, accurate context: who the author is, what experience is pertinent to the subjects they cover, and what topics they write about. Keep it concise and do not add credentials or expertise you cannot substantiate.

Google recognizes author pages and blog About Me pages as examples of pages that may be marked up with ProfilePage structured data. The key condition is that the page’s primary focus is one affiliated person or organization, rather than a general team page or an unrelated biography. See Google’s Profile page structured-data documentation.
4. Add article author structured data when it fits your site
Structured data can describe an article and its author to search engines. It complements the visible byline; it does not replace it. If your article template uses structured data, choose a suitable type such as Article, NewsArticle, or BlogPosting, then represent the author or authors accurately. Google’s Article structured-data documentation lists recommended properties but says Article objects have no required properties.

authorfield.” - Use the author’s name in
author.name; put a job title in its appropriate property instead of appending it to the name. - Provide an accurate profile URL when available. Use

The Schema.org author property defines the vocabulary for identifying an author and accepts a person or organization. Follow Google’s documentation for the search-specific implementation.

- Review the published article’s byline, including every co-author or the organizational author shown to readers.
- Check the structured data for the same authors, names, author types, and relevant profile URLs. Correct any mismatch between markup and page content.
- Run the page through Google’s Rich Results Test to check the structured data.
- After deployment, use Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to inspect the live URL. Crawling and re-indexing may take time, and a successful validation does not guarantee that Google will display a special search presentation.
Visible authorship and structured data serve different purposes
| Approach | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Byline and author profile | Lets readers identify the author and find relevant background. | Use a clear byline where authorship is expected, with a link to a useful profile when available. |
| Article structured data | Provides machine-readable information about the article and author. | Use when it fits the article template and your site’s CMS implementation; keep it consistent with the visible page. |
| ProfilePage structured data | Describes an eligible profile page. | Use for a page primarily focused on one person or organization affiliated with the site. |
These approaches are complementary, not alternatives. A CMS-integrated plugin may simplify structured-data implementation, but choose based on your platform and existing setup; no particular plugin is required or endorsed by Google’s cited guidance.
