You can add physical cash to your Venmo balance at a staffed Walmart register by swiping your physical Venmo Debit Card. Venmo lists a $3.74 fee per deposit, and the service is unavailable in Vermont. The money goes into your Venmo account balance—not a separate balance stored on the card.
How to add cash to your Venmo account at Walmart

Go to a staffed register at a Walmart store. Venmo says its in-store cash-loading service is currently unavailable in Vermont. See Venmo’s Add Cash in Stores instructions for the current details.

Present your physical Venmo Mastercard Debit Card and ask the clerk to add money to your Venmo Debit Card. You need to swipe the card; the process is not a cash deposit onto the card at a self-service kiosk.

Choose an amount within the limits: $20–$500 per transaction. Venmo lists a $3.74 fee for each in-store cash deposit. Deposits over $300 require identification matching the name on the card.

After the transaction, check your Venmo app transaction feed. Venmo says the deposit appears as “POSDEP*CASH” with the store location.
Cash deposit fees and limits
Venmo’s Help Center lists the following limits for cash added in stores. These are service limits published by Venmo; the Help Center does not show a publication date for them, and they were accessed in 2026.

The $3.74 fee applies to each in-store cash deposit, according to Venmo. The Help Center does not state that this service is free.
What “put cash on the card” means
The physical Venmo Debit Card is linked to your Venmo account. Cash loaded at Walmart is added to the account balance associated with the card; it does not create a separate card-only purse. The card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. pursuant to a Mastercard license, according to Venmo’s Venmo Debit Card FAQ.

Venmo says the card is available to most users. To apply, use the Cards tab in the Venmo app. Eligibility and availability may vary.

If you do not have physical cash, Venmo also documents app-based funding and Direct Deposit. The right route depends on whether you have a linked account and how quickly you need the funds.

Transfer from a linked debit card

In the app, go to Me > Add Money > From a bank or debit card.

Enter an amount, select the debit card as the payment method, and tap Add.

Venmo says debit-card transfers are typically available instantly. Once initiated, a transfer cannot be canceled. See Adding Money to Your Venmo Balance.
Transfer from a linked bank account
Use the same Me > Add Money > From a bank or debit card path, then choose a linked bank account. Venmo says these transfers typically take 3–5 business days to reach your balance, and the funds are unavailable until the transfer completes. Verification requirements or transfer limits may apply; weekends, holidays, and reviews can delay processing.
Receive pay or eligible government payments by Direct Deposit
For eligible users who have completed required identity verification, account and routing numbers are available in the app under Me > Settings > Direct Deposit. Give the exact details displayed there to your employer or other issuer. Venmo says setup can take up to two pay cycles to take effect, and the timing varies by issuer. Its Direct Deposit FAQ also describes receiving some government payments, including unemployment, tax refunds, and Social Security, subject to the issuer accepting the provided account details.
