To add background music to a nonstop YouTube stream from a VPS, run an encoder on the VPS that continuously combines a video source and music into one audio-video feed, then send that feed to YouTube using the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Test the feed and audio before leaving it unattended. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, so use music licensed for livestreaming and address Content ID allowlisting where necessary.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
The VPS runs the encoder; YouTube receives its audio-video output at an ingestion URL. In YouTube’s API model, a live stream represents the transmitted feed and is associated with a live broadcast. The music is part of that feed’s audio, not a separate track that YouTube adds afterward. The exact encoding and playlist setup depends on your media and encoder; official documentation does not prescribe one universal looping command.
There are two common implementation routes: a graphical encoder such as OBS or a command-line encoder such as FFmpeg. Choose based on how you intend to manage the VPS, prepare the playlist, monitor the process, and recover from a stopped encoder. The available official documentation confirms FFmpeg protocol support, but does not establish that either route is faster, more reliable, or less resource-intensive for this workload.
What to prepare before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a broadcast created or scheduled in Live Control Room.
- A VPS with the video source, music files, and encoder installed. No universal VPS CPU, memory, or network specification is established for this workload, so validate the machine with your chosen media and settings.
- Music whose license explicitly covers continuous YouTube livestream use, plus a plan for any Content ID allowlisting needed by the rights owner.
- A secure place to retrieve and enter the stream key. Treat it as a credential; rotate it if it is exposed.
- A way to monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health while testing. For unattended operation, configure a service supervisor appropriate to the VPS operating system and verify its restart behavior rather than assuming it will recover correctly.
Set up the stream from the VPS
- Enable live streaming and create the broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, enable live streaming for the channel if needed, then create or schedule the broadcast. Use the stream settings and key provided there; labels and interface flows can change.
- Prepare the program on the VPS. Put the visual source and music files or playlist on the VPS. Select an encoder pipeline that continuously emits both video and audio. Confirm that the playlist behavior, file formats, and looping approach work with your operating system and encoder build. The cited FFmpeg documentation explains protocol support, but does not validate a particular playlist command.
- Retrieve the RTMPS destination. In Live Control Room’s Stream settings, select the RTMPS URL (shown with a lock icon in the described interface) and copy the URL and stream key. Prefer the URL displayed for your broadcast over an endpoint copied from an old tutorial.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the RTMPS URL and stream key in your encoder’s output settings. The connection must use a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path, port 443, and the correct server hostname for TLS Server Name Indication (SNI). The encoder must support RTMPS.
- Run a short test before going nonstop. Start the encoder, verify that YouTube receives video and audio, and inspect stream health. The YouTube API documents health issues including
noAudioStream, videoBitrateLow, andframerateMismatch. Resolve warnings and confirm the feed stays connected before relying on it unattended. - Set up supervision and monitoring. Configure a suitable service manager to restart the encoder if it exits, and monitor both the process and the YouTube ingest externally. Test a deliberate stop and restart so you know whether the encoder resumes the intended playlist and reconnects as expected. These are operational safeguards; no specific supervisor configuration or restart behavior is established for every VPS and encoder combination.
RTMPS settings and connection failures
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection. Google’s ingestion guide specifies a valid rtmps URL, YouTube endpoint and application path, port 443, and the hostname needed for SNI authentication. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation defines RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection; it does not validate a particular YouTube command line or playlist loop.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Connection timeout: Check that the VPS can reach port 443 and that the URL is the RTMPS address from Live Control Room, not an ordinary RTMP URL.
- SSL or handshake error: Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and is using the hostname from the destination URL for TLS SNI. Do not replace the host with an IP address unless your setup preserves the required hostname for authentication.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the full URL, application path, stream key, and that the broadcast is active. Copy the current destination from Live Control Room rather than relying on an older tutorial.
- Stream health reports missing audio: Verify the encoder is including the music input in its outgoing audio-video feed, that the media is playable, and that audio is present during the test.
- Health reports low video bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch: Review the encoder output settings and compare them with the expected stream configuration. The API names these health issues but does not prescribe a bitrate or VPS sizing for this specific workload.
Music rights can interrupt a technically healthy stream
YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party content, it may show a placeholder image and warn you; if the content continues, it may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone may not prevent this: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm livestream coverage with the licensor and ask about allowlisting when relevant. YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams explains the enforcement process.
If you archive the broadcast, Content ID claims on the archived live stream are made after the stream is completed. That is separate from live scanning, so not archiving does not remove the risk of a live interruption.
