In that stream’s settings, turn on Closed captions, choose Automatic captions, and select the video language. The option is enabled per stream—not once for the whole channel—and YouTube’s documented live automatic caption support is English-only and still rolling out to channels. YouTube Help explains the setting and its current limits.
Turn on automatic captions in YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.

In the left menu, select Stream.

In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.

Choose Automatic captions as the caption source, then select the video language.

Save or apply the settings if Studio prompts you, and confirm the captions are enabled before starting the stream.

YouTube Help says, “The automatic captions can only be turned on for individual live streams, not the entire channel.” If you cannot find the option, it may not yet be available to your channel; YouTube describes rollout as ongoing. The control labels and availability can change, so check the current Studio stream settings if your screen differs. See YouTube’s automatic-caption instructions.
Check the limits before going live

Language: YouTube’s documented live automatic-caption option is English-only. Choose the matching video language, but do not expect the feature to caption another language through this control.

Latency: Live automatic captions require normal latency. YouTube lists low and ultra-low latency as unsupported; some mobile streams may also be affected.

Audio and speech: Poor sound, speech the system cannot recognize, speakers talking over one another, or multiple languages spoken at once can stop captions from appearing or reduce their accuracy.

These conditions are listed in YouTube’s live automatic-caption troubleshooting guidance. Automatic recognition can make mistakes, so do not treat captions as a guaranteed verbatim transcript.
Rehearse and improve caption readability

Before the event, run a short private or unlisted rehearsal with the same kind of speech, movement, and audio you expect during the live broadcast. Check that captions appear and follow the speech.

Keep speech clear and avoid having people speak over one another where practical. If the existing audio is difficult to hear, address that sound problem; no particular microphone or setting guarantees caption accuracy.

While live, monitor stream health and whether captions are appearing. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement before going live. Read YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance and stream preparation advice.

If automatic captions are unavailable or unsuitable
Embedded captions through an encoder
If your encoder workflow supports it, configure the stream for embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and select embedded captions in the encoder. The standard allows up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one embedded caption track. This requires encoder setup rather than simply enabling Studio’s automatic-caption control. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe the supported setup.
External caption software for an event
A separate option is supported caption software connected through a caption ingestion URL. YouTube’s requirements page says this workflow requires adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay in advanced settings. It is a more involved route, best suited to creators who already have a caption provider or an established encoder workflow; account for the delay when planning the event.
What happens to captions on the replay?
Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. YouTube generates captions for the video-on-demand replay separately, and those captions may differ from the live captions. Check the replay later and review or correct the available captions separately. YouTube Help describes the difference between live and replay captions.
