Use WordPress’s File block to add a downloadable file, but don’t expect it to automatically show a file-type icon. For a list of downloads with icons, the WordPress.org directory lists the Download List Block with Icons plugin; custom theme or plugin output can use WordPress’s attachment and MIME-type functions.
What WordPress’s built-in File block does
The File block is WordPress’s built-in way to place a downloadable attachment in a post or page. It supports a linked file name, a download button, and—when the file is a PDF—an inline embed option. Its documentation does not describe an automatic file-type icon beside each file link. WordPress File block documentation

WordPress media can include documents, spreadsheets, and code samples, not just images, video, and audio. An inserted file can link to the media file itself or to an attachment page served through the WordPress template hierarchy. WordPress documentation on image and file attachments

Add a downloadable file with the File block
- Edit the post or page where the file should appear.
- Add a File block from the Block Inserter, or type
/filein a new paragraph and press Enter. - Upload a file or choose one from the Media Library.
- Change the displayed file name if you want it to read differently from the uploaded filename.
- In the block settings, choose whether the link opens the media file directly or its attachment page. You can also set it to open in a new tab and show or hide the download button. Hiding the button leaves the file name as a link.
- For a PDF, use the File block’s inline embed setting if you want the document displayed in the page.
These settings control the file link and its presentation; they do not turn the File block into an automatic file-type icon system. See the File block settings

Choose the link destination
A direct media-file link opens the uploaded file itself. An attachment-page link opens a WordPress page for that media item instead. Choose based on what visitors should reach when they click: the file, or its attachment page. WordPress explains both attachment handling and the template hierarchy in its attachment documentation.
Add file-type icons to a download list without coding
For multiple downloads presented as a managed list, the WordPress.org directory lists Download List Block with Icons. Its listing describes a Gutenberg block that selects Media Library files and displays a list with file-type icons, links, titles, sizes, and descriptions. The listing also describes options for showing file details, choosing direct-file or attachment-page links, selecting icon sets, and adding custom icons through hooks. The separate Icon Block plugin is a general tool for inserting SVG icons and graphics in the block editor. Its listing says that inserting an icon from the Media Library depends on SVG uploads being supported; it does not describe automatic attachment-aware file-type icons. View The Icon Block listing
When to use custom code
If you need custom attachment output in a theme or plugin, WordPress documents wp_mime_type_icon() for retrieving an icon associated with a MIME type or attachment; it returns an icon or false. The wp_get_attachment_link() function generates an attachment hyperlink, and its reference notes WordPress’s use of media icons to represent attachment files where such icons are available. wp_mime_type_icon() reference · wp_get_attachment_link() reference

Those function references are starting points, not a complete, tested implementation for every theme and file type. In custom output, verify which icons are available, confirm the link destination, escape generated output appropriately, and style the result for your site.
