How to Add Apps to Android Auto and Customize the Launcher

A practical guide to installing compatible Android Auto apps, customizing their launcher order, and troubleshooting icons that do not appear.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add an app to Android Auto, install an Android Auto-compatible version from Google Play, open it on your phone if required, then choose it in Customize launcher. On most phones, the control is Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher. You can show or hide supported apps and drag them into a new order. Exit and restart Android Auto so the changes appear on the car display.

Installing an ordinary phone app is not enough: only apps with an Android Auto interface can appear in the car launcher. Android Auto is integrated into supported phones, so you do not download a separate Android Auto app for projection.

What the Android Auto launcher actually controls

The launcher is the app grid you open on the vehicle’s Android Auto screen. Its phone-side settings determine which compatible apps are visible and the sequence in which their icons appear. The setting does not convert a normal mobile app into an Android Auto app, and it cannot make an unsupported service appear.

Google’s Android Auto-compatible app guide points to the current Google Play collection. Compatibility can change as developers update, remove or region-limit an app, so an app that worked previously is not guaranteed to remain listed. You also need to be signed in to a Google Account with personalization enabled to see the complete set of compatible listings in Google Play.

Android Auto itself is part of the phone software on supported devices. Do not search for a separate “Android Auto for cars” download as a prerequisite for this procedure. Installing another utility cannot add an Android Auto interface to a phone-only app.

Before you start: a quick checklist

  • Use a phone and vehicle that support Android Auto and choose wired or wireless projection.
  • Sign in to the Google Account used on the phone and turn on personalization if Google Play is not showing all compatible apps.
  • Install the app from Google Play, then open it on the phone and complete sign-in or account setup.
  • For media services, check whether that individual service requires a subscription or premium account. Android Auto itself does not make every service paid.
  • Park before changing settings or browsing the launcher on the car screen.

This checklist prevents two common mistakes: trying to add an unsupported app and troubleshooting the launcher when Android Auto has not established a connection in the first place.

Check compatibility before installing anything

Android Auto projection requires more than an app and a phone. Confirm the phone, connection method and vehicle meet Google’s current requirements and then check the vehicle maker’s compatibility list for the exact model and stereo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Connection Phone requirements Vehicle and connection requirements
Wired Android Auto Google’s current getting-started page specifies Android 11.0 or later and an active mobile-data plan. A compatible car or stereo and a high-quality USB data cable. Google recommends a cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), with no hub or extension.
Wireless Android Auto A compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google’s current page describes wireless projection as compatible with phones running Android 11.0. A car or stereo that supports wireless Android Auto. Phone and vehicle compatibility must be confirmed separately.
Android Go edition Not supported for Android Auto projection according to Google’s getting-started guidance. Changing the cable or launcher cannot overcome this platform limitation.

Requirements and menu labels can differ by phone model, Android release, language and region. If the documented path is not present, open Settings and search for Android Auto. For current requirements, consult Google’s getting-started page and your vehicle manufacturer before buying accessories or diagnosing an installation problem.

Find an app that can run in Android Auto

Start with compatibility rather than the app’s popularity or its ordinary phone features. A music, messaging, news or navigation app may have a driving interface, but many other phone apps do not. Android Auto only exposes interfaces that developers have made compatible with the platform.

  1. Open Google’s compatible-app listing. Use the Download apps for Android Auto help page and follow its Google Play link. If the list looks incomplete, verify that you are signed in to your Google Account and that personalization is turned on.
  2. Read the Play listing before installing. Look for an explicit Android Auto or driving-support indication. Seeing an app on your phone does not prove that it has an Android Auto component.
  3. Install the app on the phone. Android Auto uses the phone’s installed app when the phone projects to the car. There is no separate car-display package to install.
  4. Open and configure it on the phone. For media apps, Google advises signing in before starting Android Auto. A particular service may require its own subscription or premium account; that requirement belongs to the service, not to Android Auto generally.

After installation, the app may still be absent from the launcher until you select it in the phone’s launcher settings. Do not assume that an app will appear immediately merely because its Play listing is compatible.

Customize which apps appear and their order

Open Customize launcher on the phone

  1. Open Settings on the Android phone.
  2. Tap Connected Devices.
  3. Choose Connection Preferences.
  4. Tap Android Auto.
  5. Select Customize launcher.

This is the documented route in Google’s Android Auto guidance. Manufacturers sometimes rename or regroup these screens. If any item is missing, use the Settings search field for “Android Auto” and open the result that leads to Android Auto preferences.

Show or hide a compatible app

The Customize launcher list contains the Android Auto apps that the phone can expose. Use the control beside an app name to include it in or remove it from the launcher. Hiding an icon does not uninstall the phone app; it only removes the shortcut from the car’s app grid. The exact switch or checkbox appearance varies by Android version.

If an app is listed but unchecked, enable it, leave Settings and restart Android Auto. If it is not listed at all, treat that as a compatibility, account, regional-availability or phone-restriction issue rather than an ordering problem.

Put frequently used apps first

In the same list, press and hold an app name, then drag it to the position you want. Put the services you use most near the top so you do not have to scroll through a long list while parked. Reordering affects the launcher sequence, not the app’s internal playlists, accounts or settings.

You can arrange navigation, media, messaging and news apps in any order the launcher permits. The order is stored in Android Auto preferences on the phone, so changing phones or resetting the phone can require you to arrange the list again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the change on the car display

Exit Android Auto completely and start it again. Google’s developer guidance says launcher changes take effect after Android Auto is exited and restarted. Once the connection is active, tap the app-launcher button on the car screen and browse the icons. If the old order remains, disconnect and reconnect the projection after confirming that the phone-side list saved.

Why an installed app is missing

Work through these checks in order. They separate an unsupported app from a hidden icon or a phone-level restriction.

1. The app has no Android Auto interface

Installation alone does not add a car interface. Return to Google’s compatible-app page and verify that the exact app and region are supported. A regular phone-only app cannot be forced into the launcher through Customize launcher.

2. The icon is hidden in Customize launcher

Open Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher and look for the app in the list. Turn its launcher control on, then exit and restart Android Auto. If the menu path differs on your phone, search Settings for Android Auto.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. A Samsung unused-app control disabled it

Google notes that Samsung phones can temporarily disable an app through unused-app battery controls. Open the app on the phone to re-enable it. If it disappears again, look in battery settings for a control labelled Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep and turn that control off for the app. Samsung’s wording and location can vary; Google directs users to the device manufacturer when the battery setting is difficult to locate. See Google’s “Find an app that is not on the app launcher” guidance for this case.

4. The app needs phone-side setup

Some media services do not present usable content until you sign in on the phone. Open the app while the phone has data access, complete its account setup and confirm any service-specific subscription requirement. Then reconnect Android Auto and check the launcher again.

5. The app is unavailable for your account or region

Google Play can show different compatible-app results by account, personalization setting and region. Sign in to the intended Google Account, enable personalization and check the app’s current Play listing. A listing can also be removed or changed by its developer, so an older guide or a friend’s phone is not proof that the app is currently available to you.

6. Android Auto has not restarted

The launcher can retain its previous state during an active projection session. Leave Android Auto, disconnect the phone, wait for the car screen to close the session, and reconnect. Recheck the phone’s Customize launcher list before assuming the app installation failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. The phone or car does not meet projection requirements

Android Go devices are not supported. Wireless projection also needs 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on a compatible phone and a compatible car or stereo. For wired projection, an incompatible vehicle, damaged data port or charge-only cable can prevent Android Auto from starting at all, which means no launcher app can appear.

Wired and wireless connections: what changes

The launcher procedure is the same after Android Auto is running, but connection requirements differ. Wireless projection is not created by installing an app or by changing the launcher. It depends on both ends of the link supporting the wireless mode and on the phone meeting Google’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirement.

Question Wired Wireless
Does the connection need a USB cable? Yes, use a high-quality USB data cable. No cable is used for the projection session, but the phone and stereo must support wireless Android Auto.
What commonly blocks setup? Charge-only or damaged cable, hub, extension, incompatible USB port or unsupported vehicle. Phone without 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, unsupported stereo or vehicle, or other compatibility mismatch.
Does changing the launcher fix the connection? No. Launcher settings affect visible app icons after projection is established. No. Launcher settings cannot add wireless capability.

For a wired connection, Google recommends a cable under 1 metre (3 feet), without hubs or extensions, and suggests trying the cable supplied by the phone manufacturer. Match the connector to both the phone and the vehicle, and use a cable verified for data transfer rather than charging only. If you are buying a replacement, compare connector type, confirmed data capability, length and, where applicable, USB-IF certification. A shorter cable is easier to route and follows Google’s recommendation, but certification or a premium label cannot make an unsupported car compatible.

A cable can stabilize a wired link, but it cannot make an incompatible app appear or add apps to the launcher. Do not buy a wireless adapter solely to customize the launcher; wireless use still depends on phone and car compatibility. Google’s troubleshooting guidance is available at My Android Auto app isn’t working.

Use the launcher without changing app data

Customize launcher changes the shortcuts shown in Android Auto; it does not move an app’s account, downloads or playlists. Those remain in the phone app. If a media app asks you to authenticate, do so on the phone before driving. Google’s Listen to media guidance explains that media apps are selected from the car launcher after they have been set up on the phone.

Keep the launcher list limited to services you genuinely use. A shorter list makes an icon easier to find and avoids repeatedly scrolling through unsupported or unused entries. Hiding an app is reversible: return to Customize launcher and enable it again. Removing an icon from the launcher does not cancel a subscription or delete the app from the phone.

A repeatable troubleshooting sequence

When an app still does not appear, use this sequence instead of reinstalling random software:

  1. Confirm the app’s compatibility. Check Google’s current Android Auto Play listing and account-personalization requirement.
  2. Open the app on the phone. Sign in and complete any service-specific setup.
  3. Check Android Auto’s launcher list. Use the documented Settings path or Settings search, and make sure the app is enabled.
  4. Inspect phone restrictions. On Samsung devices, check unused-app battery controls; open the app to re-enable it if necessary.
  5. Restart the projection session. Exit Android Auto, disconnect and reconnect, then open the launcher on the car screen.
  6. Test the connection requirements. For wired use, replace a suspect cable with a short, high-quality data cable and remove hubs or extensions. For wireless use, verify 5 GHz Wi-Fi and vehicle support.
  7. Check the vehicle maker’s compatibility information. If Android Auto itself never starts, the problem is connection or vehicle compatibility rather than launcher ordering.

This process avoids a common mistake: treating every missing icon as an installation failure. If the app is unsupported, no setting can add it; if it is supported but hidden or disabled, the launcher and phone settings usually reveal the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping expectations realistic

Google’s compatible-app pages are the authoritative starting point, but they do not promise that every individual listing will remain available in every country or account. App availability, labels and Android Auto behavior can change with phone updates, Android versions, developer releases and regional policies. Recheck the live Google Help pages when a menu or requirement no longer matches your phone.

The essential distinction is simple: install a compatible app on the phone, enable and order it in Customize launcher, then restart Android Auto. The launcher controls presentation; compatibility and the phone-and-car connection determine whether the app can run at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install a separate Android Auto app?

No. Google integrates Android Auto into supported phones. Install the compatible app you want to use, then configure it through Android Auto settings on the phone.

Why does an app installed from Google Play not appear in Android Auto?

The app may not support Android Auto, may be unavailable for your account or region, may be hidden in Customize launcher, or may have been disabled by phone battery controls. Open the app on the phone, verify compatibility, enable it in Customize launcher and restart Android Auto.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I change the order of Android Auto apps?

On the phone, open Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher. Press and hold an app name and drag it to the desired position, then exit and restart Android Auto.

What if I cannot find Customize launcher?

Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. Search the phone’s Settings for “Android Auto” and open the result leading to Android Auto preferences.

Can I add any Android app to the car launcher?

No. Only apps with an Android Auto-compatible interface can appear. Customize launcher can show, hide or reorder supported apps; it cannot convert a phone-only app.

Does a USB cable affect which apps appear?

A cable affects whether a wired Android Auto connection starts or remains stable, not app compatibility. Use a high-quality data cable under 1 metre (3 feet), without hubs or extensions. A cable cannot add an unsupported app.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did an app disappear again on my Samsung phone?

Samsung unused-app battery controls can temporarily disable apps. Open the app to re-enable it, then check for Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep and adjust that setting if necessary.

Do media apps require paid subscriptions?

Some individual media services require a subscription or premium account, while others do not. Check the service’s own terms; Android Auto does not impose a universal subscription requirement.

The Bottom Line

Install an app that explicitly supports Android Auto, open it on the phone, enable it under Customize launcher, drag it into position and restart Android Auto. If it is still missing, check compatibility, account and regional availability, Samsung unused-app controls, and the separate wired or wireless connection requirements.
