Add a language in Gboard’s language settings, then switch between the languages you’ve enabled from the keyboard. These settings affect what you can type with Gboard, not the language used by your Android phone, iPhone or iPad.
Add a language to Gboard on Android
- Open an app where you can type and tap a text field to bring up Gboard.
- Open Gboard settings and tap Languages > Add keyboard.
- Select the language and the layout you want.
- Tap Done.
Google also documents a route through Android settings: Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Languages. Choose a language and layout, then tap Done. Menu names and locations can differ by device and Android version; if this route does not match your phone, open Gboard in a text field and use its settings instead. Add a language to Gboard on iPhone or iPad
- Open an app where you can type, then touch and hold the Globe key at the bottom of the keyboard.
- Tap Settings > Languages > Add language.
- Choose the language you want to enable.
You can also open the Gboard app, tap Languages > Add language, and select languages there. Google’s setup page says Gboard supports up to three languages at a time on iPhone and iPad; that stated limit is specific to its guidance for these platforms, not a general Android limit. Switch languages while typing
On Android
Tap a text field to open Gboard, then touch and hold the space bar to switch among configured languages. To show a dedicated language switch key instead, open Gboard Preferences and enable Show language switch key. Google’s directions open settings by holding the comma key and dragging to Settings. Adding or switching a Gboard language changes the keyboard’s typing language; it does not change your device’s operating-system language.
