On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose the Lock Screen you want, tap Add Widgets (or tap an existing widget), select or drag widgets into the available area, then tap Done. If the area is full, remove a widget before adding another.
What Lock Screen widgets do
Lock Screen widgets put frequently needed information in the space beneath the time, so you can glance at it without opening an app. Apple’s examples include temperature, air quality, battery level and upcoming calendar events. Depending on the widget, the Lock Screen can also support a simple action while the phone remains locked; Apple gives checking off a Reminders item as an example.

Widgets are supplied by apps installed on the iPhone. The choices you see therefore depend on your iOS release, installed apps and the Lock Screen wallpaper you selected. The feature itself is available on iOS 16 and later, according to Apple Support.
Before you begin
- Confirm that the iPhone is running iOS 16 or later. Earlier versions do not provide the Lock Screen widget workflow described here.
- Wake the iPhone and leave it on the Lock Screen. You do not need to open the app whose widget you want.
- If you have saved more than one Lock Screen, identify which one you want to change. Each saved Lock Screen can have its own wallpaper and widget arrangement.
- Have the device passcode available. If the editing controls do not appear, Apple’s guide says you may need to touch and hold again and enter the passcode.
Add widgets to a Lock Screen
- Wake the iPhone and show the target Lock Screen. Touch and hold the Lock Screen. If a different saved Lock Screen is displayed, swipe between the saved Lock Screens until the one you want is visible.
- Open the editor. Tap Customize. If the button is not shown, touch and hold the Lock Screen again; the iPhone may ask for the passcode before allowing edits.
- Choose the Lock Screen to edit. If you entered the editor from a collection of saved Lock Screens, select the particular Lock Screen you want and tap its customization option.
- Open the widget area. Tap the widget area beneath the time, or tap Add Widgets when that control is shown.
- Pick a widget. Browse the available categories and tap a widget to place it, or drag it into the layout. The choices and shapes shown in the picker are determined by the apps installed and the current iOS release.
- Make room when necessary. The widget area has limited space. If the iPhone will not accept another widget, remove one already in the layout and then choose the replacement.
- Save the change. Close the widget picker and tap Done. The edited Lock Screen remains available in your saved Lock Screens.
Edit widgets that are already on the Lock Screen
Editing uses the same Lock Screen editor rather than the Home Screen widget controls.

- Wake the iPhone and touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Swipe to the saved Lock Screen you want, if necessary, then tap Customize.
- Tap the existing widget you want to change. If you want a different widget, tap Add Widgets and replace the current one after making space.
- Choose the available configuration, if that widget offers one, and tap Done when finished.
Not every widget has a settings screen. Apple specifically identifies Weather as an example of a widget that can offer different configurations; other widgets may simply be selected without an additional choice.
Remove a widget or replace it
Remove one widget
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen and tap Customize.
- Tap the widget area to enter its editing view.
- Use the remove control on the widget you no longer want.
- Tap Done to save the Lock Screen.
Removing a widget is useful when the area is full or when you want a less crowded Lock Screen. It does not uninstall the underlying app.
Replace one with another
Remove the existing widget first if the new choice will not fit. Then tap Add Widgets, select or drag the replacement into the open space and tap Done. This preserves the rest of the Lock Screen arrangement while changing the selected information source.

Widgets are only one part of a Lock Screen. From the same Customize flow, you can edit a saved Lock Screen or create a new one from the wallpaper gallery. The customization controls available to you depend partly on the wallpaper you select, so two Lock Screens can present different choices even on the same iPhone.

To work on a different design without overwriting the current one, touch and hold the Lock Screen, swipe through the saved designs and use the wallpaper gallery to create another Lock Screen. Add its widgets after selecting the wallpaper. This is useful when you want one arrangement for work and another for personal use, while keeping both available to select from the Lock Screen.
What you can do from a locked iPhone
Lock Screen widgets are primarily glanceable: they expose a small amount of current app information without requiring an app launch. Some also support interaction while the iPhone is locked. A Reminders widget, for example, can allow an item to be checked off. The exact interaction depends on the widget and the app that provides it; do not assume that tapping every widget will perform an action.
If a widget shows information that seems out of date or does not offer an expected action, first identify which app supplies it and which configuration is selected. The Lock Screen editor controls the widget placement and any options the widget exposes; it does not give every widget the same set of controls.

The two kinds of widgets are managed separately. The procedure above edits the wallpaper-based Lock Screen layout. Home Screen widgets are edited from the Home Screen instead, so opening the Home Screen and looking for its edit controls will not change the Lock Screen.

Choose useful widgets without overcrowding the Lock Screen
Start with information you check repeatedly
Temperature, air quality, battery level and upcoming calendar events are practical examples because they answer common questions at a glance. Pick only the information that benefits from being visible before you unlock the phone. If an item is rarely relevant, it consumes limited space without improving the Lock Screen.
Match the widget to the Lock Screen’s purpose
A calendar-focused arrangement can suit a work Lock Screen, while a weather or battery-focused arrangement may suit a travel or outdoor Lock Screen. Because each saved Lock Screen can be edited independently, you can keep different combinations rather than forcing every use case into one layout.
Prefer a supported interaction only when it is genuinely useful
An interactive widget can save a step for a small action such as completing a reminder. If you only want to read information, a glanceable widget may be a better use of the available area. Interaction support varies by widget, so evaluate the option shown in the editor instead of expecting a universal tap behavior.
Troubleshooting the Lock Screen widget editor
“Customize” does not appear
Make sure the phone is awake and you are touching the Lock Screen itself. Touch and hold again; Apple’s guide notes that a second attempt and passcode entry may be required. If several Lock Screens are saved, swipe until the intended one is displayed before trying to edit it.

There is no “Add Widgets” button
Tap the widget area beneath the time after opening Customize. The button may be presented as the area itself when no widget has been added, while an existing layout may require tapping the current widget area to edit it.
The widget you want is not listed
Available widgets come from installed apps and can vary by iOS release. Check that the app providing the information is installed, then reopen the widget picker. If it still is not listed, that app or iOS release may not provide a Lock Screen widget. The absence of a Home Screen widget does not prove that a Lock Screen version exists, and the reverse is also true.
The iPhone says there is not enough room
The available area is full. Return to the widget editor, remove an existing widget and then add the new one. Selecting a different widget arrangement or a different saved Lock Screen can also be appropriate when you want to retain the current set.
A widget offers no configuration choices
That can be normal. Widget configuration varies: some widgets provide alternatives, while others have only one presentation. Weather is an example Apple gives of a widget with different configurations, but not every widget exposes equivalent settings.
The controls look different from these steps
Apple’s published instructions cover iOS 16 and later, but exact labels and available choices can change with an iOS release, installed apps and wallpaper. Follow the controls shown after you touch and hold the Lock Screen, and look for Customize, the widget area or Add Widgets. If you are editing the Home Screen, return to the Lock Screen before applying these steps.
A quick repeatable workflow
- Wake the iPhone and display the saved Lock Screen you want.
- Touch and hold it, authenticate with the passcode if requested, and tap Customize.
- Tap the widget area or Add Widgets.
- Select or drag the desired widget into the available space.
- Remove an existing widget if the space is full.
- Tap the widget again only if it offers a configuration you want to change.
- Close the picker and tap Done.
This sequence edits the Lock Screen only. Home Screen widgets require the separate Home Screen editing flow.
Version and availability notes
Apple Support states that Lock Screen widgets are available with iOS 16 or later. Apple’s current iPhone user guide also notes that widget and Lock Screen customization options depend on the selected wallpaper. Consequently, an instruction or screenshot from another iOS release may show a different picker, label or set of available widgets even though the core press-and-hold, Customize, widget-area and Done path remains the starting point.
