Use ax.set_xlabel() to add a descriptive x-axis label in Matplotlib, then pass text options such as fontsize, color or labelpad to style and position it.
Add a descriptive x-axis label
With Matplotlib’s object-oriented interface, set the label on the Axes you want to annotate:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot([1, 2, 3], [2, 4, 3])
ax.set_xlabel("Time (s)")
plt.show()
ax.set_xlabel() targets that specific Axes, which is useful when a figure contains multiple subplots. Matplotlib’s Text in Matplotlib tutorial describes set_xlabel as a straightforward way to label the x-axis. For a pyplot-style workflow, plt.xlabel("Time (s)") sets the label on the current Axes; the Axes method makes the target explicit. See the Matplotlib Axes API.

set_xlabel() accepts text properties as keyword arguments. For example:
#1 Best Overall
ax.set_xlabel("Time (s)", fontsize="large", fontweight="bold", color="navy")
You can also set properties such as font family and style, or use a FontProperties object. Matplotlib documents these options in its text tutorial.
Adjust spacing and alignment
Move the label farther from the plot
Pass labelpad to control the distance between the axis label and the axes/tick-label area. Its value is measured in points:
ax.set_xlabel("Time (s)", labelpad=12)
Matplotlib’s text tutorial notes that points are the same unit used for font sizes. The default axes.labelpad setting is 4 points; the configuration documentation lists it alongside other axis-label defaults. Choose padding based on the rendered figure rather than treating one value as suitable for every layout.

Where supported by the installed Matplotlib API, loc="left" selects a left-aligned x-axis label. For more explicit horizontal placement, use a position and horizontal-alignment setting. The vertical coordinate in position does not control the label’s vertical distance from the axes; use labelpad for that spacing.

Use a multiline label when it improves clarity
Include a newline character to put part of the label on a second line:
ax.set_xlabel("Time (s)nExperiment duration")
Multiline labels are supported, but use additional vertical space. Check the saved or displayed figure at its intended output size to make sure the label is not crowded or clipped.

The axis label describes the dimension, such as “Time (s).” Tick labels are the numbers or category names shown at individual x-axis positions. They are controlled separately.
- To change the size, color or rotation of x-axis tick labels, use
tick_params, for exampleax.tick_params(axis="x", labelsize=9, labelrotation=30). - To control tick positions and their displayed values or categories, use tick locations and formatters, or
set_xtickswith labels where appropriate.
tick_params changes ticks, tick labels and grid lines; it does not style the descriptive axis label. Matplotlib’s Axis ticks guide covers tick controls and marks direct use of set_xticklabels as discouraged. Prefer setting tick locations or formatters rather than assigning tick-label strings directly.
Set defaults for multiple plots
For consistent axis labels across a figure or a project, Matplotlib provides configuration settings including axes.labelsize, axes.labelpad, axes.labelweight and axes.labelcolor. Set them through rcParams or a style sheet; the rcParams documentation describes the available configuration options.
Long labels can crowd compact plots. Adjust the text size and padding, consider a multiline label, and inspect the final output dimensions to catch clipping. The right layout depends on the figure and its axes arrangement.
