To add an SEO Editor in WordPress, first check whether your SEO plugin provides that role. Yoast SEO’s 2023 Academy material says it adds SEO Editor and SEO Manager roles; an administrator can assign the narrower SEO Editor role to an existing or new user. If your plugin does not provide one, create a custom role or use a role-management plugin, granting only the capabilities the person’s work requires.
Choose the right way to provide SEO access

Assign Yoast SEO’s SEO Editor role
Yoast Academy course material published in 2023 describes Yoast SEO as introducing SEO Editor and SEO Manager roles. The SEO Editor role is intended to provide SEO editing access without the broader access to plugin settings associated with a manager role. This is specific to Yoast; do not assume another SEO plugin creates either role, or that current menu labels are identical to those in the course.

- Create or locate the user account. The person needs a WordPress account before you can assign a role.
- Open WordPress user management as an administrator. Select the account you want to update. Menu names can vary by WordPress version and configuration.
- Choose the SEO Editor role if it is available. Save the user’s account changes, then confirm the role shown for that account. If the role is absent, check that the relevant SEO plugin is installed and active, or use one of the alternatives below.
Create a custom role with WordPress code
WordPress roles are collections of capabilities, not fixed levels of seniority. Its API provides add_role( $role, $display_name, $capabilities ) to register a role with selected capabilities. For an existing role, get_role() retrieves its role object and add_cap() can add a capability. See the WordPress Plugin Handbook and WordPress roles and capabilities documentation.

List the actual tasks before defining the role. Editing SEO metadata may require different permissions from publishing posts, changing redirects, editing taxonomies, bulk editing content, or working with custom post types. Plugin permissions are implementation-specific, so there is no universally correct SEO capability list. Test the chosen capabilities with the installed SEO plugin, other plugins, and your content types.

Add only the necessary capabilities
WordPress recommends: “Only grant the capabilities required for the tasks the role is intended to perform.” A capability can unlock more than one screen or action. For example, WordPress notes that edit_theme_options can grant access to the Site Editor and other theme-related administration; it is not an SEO permission and should not be added casually.
For code, use a site plugin rather than a theme-specific implementation when the role should persist independently of the active theme. Register a site-specific role slug and display name, then provide only the capabilities established for your workflow. Do not copy a generic list and assume it grants access only to SEO fields. Test the role on a staging site or with a test account before assigning it to a working user.

The Plugin Handbook advises conditioning role changes on whether capabilities differ from expectations; repeatedly making unnecessary role changes can degrade performance. In plugin code, check permissions by capability with current_user_can(), rather than relying solely on a role name. WordPress documents the API in its Common APIs Handbook.
Create or adjust a role with a role-management plugin
PublishPress Capabilities’ WordPress.org listing describes an interface for creating or copying roles and controlling WordPress and plugin capabilities. Its FAQ describes using Capabilities > Roles to create or copy a role and select capabilities. User Role Editor’s listing describes editing roles and capabilities. Interface details and compatibility can change, so check each plugin’s current listing and installed interface before following a specific click path.

- Install and activate the role-management plugin you have chosen, after checking its current compatibility and security information.
- Open its role-management screen and create a new role or copy a role that is an appropriate starting point.
- Set the role’s capabilities according to the tasks the user needs to perform. Avoid granting broad publishing or administration permissions merely to expose an SEO control.
- Assign the role to a test account and verify the required actions, including the relevant post types and plugin screens.
Keep the permission scope narrow
The built-in Editor role can publish and manage posts, including posts created by other users. If the SEO user does not need those publishing rights, use a narrower plugin-provided or custom role rather than treating Editor as a default SEO role. Administrator access is broader still and should not be used as a shortcut for a missing SEO permission.
- Check whether the user needs to edit posts and pages, or only SEO fields.
- Check whether redirects, taxonomies, custom post types, and bulk editing are part of the job; each can involve different capabilities.
- On a multisite installation, confirm whether your chosen configuration applies to one site or across the network. PublishPress Capabilities describes support for both scopes.
- Review the role after SEO plugins, other plugins, content types, or workflows change.
Troubleshoot missing SEO controls
The SEO Editor role is not in the user-role list
Confirm that the SEO plugin that supplies the role is installed and active, and check the plugin’s current documentation or interface. Yoast Academy’s cited material dates to 2023, so current labels and behavior should be verified in your installed version. If the role is not available, use a custom role or role-management plugin rather than assuming the role exists.

The user can see WordPress but not the needed SEO feature
Identify the specific action that is blocked, then check which capability the SEO plugin or relevant content type requires. Add only that capability if it is appropriate, and test again. A role name alone does not establish access: plugins should check capabilities for privileged operations, and WordPress provides current_user_can() for capability checks.

The user has more access than intended
Review the role’s full capability set, including permissions inherited from any copied role. Remove capabilities that are not needed, then retest both the SEO tasks and ordinary editorial tasks. In particular, do not add edit_theme_options as a general fix for an SEO access problem.
