To add an administrator, put the player’s 17-digit decimal SteamID64 on its own line in ownerswhitelist.txt, save the file while the server is stopped, and restart the server. The listed Steam account receives owner permissions when it connects.
The filename is ownerswhitelist.txt—not adminlist.txt. Some guides misspell it as ownedwhitelist.txt or ownerwhitelist.txt, so confirm the exact filename shown in your server’s file manager.

- Access to the server’s control panel or the machine running the dedicated server.
- The player’s SteamID64 in decimal format. It is normally a 17-digit number beginning with
7656. - Permission to stop and start the server.
- A text editor that does not add formatting, quotation marks or extra characters.
A Steam nickname, profile display name or in-game name will not work. The whitelist is matched to the Steam account identifier, so changing a nickname does not change the value you enter.

Find the correct SteamID64
Use the player’s Steam profile
Ask the player to send their Steam profile URL, then use a reputable SteamID lookup service or Steam’s account information to obtain the numeric SteamID64. Select the decimal value, not a hexadecimal value. A valid entry is numeric only; do not include steam:, a profile URL, spaces, quotation marks or a label such as admin=.
Check the number before saving
- It should contain 17 digits in the usual SteamID64 format.
- It commonly starts with
7656. - It must identify the intended Steam account, not the person who owns the server or a different account used on the same computer.
An invalid or mistyped identifier can fail silently. The server may start normally while the player receives no owner permissions, which is why copying the number and checking the profile match is important.
Locate ownerswhitelist.txt
Hosts expose the file in different places. Open the panel’s file manager or configuration editor and search for the exact filename. On a self-run server, search the dedicated-server data directory rather than the game installation directory.

Those differences reflect hosting layouts, not different file names. If a panel has an explicit “Admins” field in its server settings, it may write the same administrator list for you instead of exposing the file directly.

If the file is missing
- Start the server once and wait until it finishes loading.
- Stop it cleanly from the panel or local process.
- Refresh the file manager and search again for
ownerswhitelist.txt. - If the host still does not create it, use the panel’s documented configuration editor or create the file in the server data directory indicated by that host. Do not create several copies in different folders; only the file read by the running server will have an effect.
Several hosting guides report that the file appears during the first startup. The exact creation behavior can vary with the host’s template and the game build, so verify that the file you edit is the one in the active server data path.
Add one or more administrators through the file
- Stop the server. Use the panel’s Console, Service Settings or equivalent stop control. If you run the process locally, terminate it and wait for it to exit before editing.
- Open the exact file. Select
ownerswhitelist.txt, not a similarly named file. - Enter one SteamID64 per line. Each line must contain only one decimal ID. Do not add commas, brackets, comments, usernames or extra text.
- Save as plain text. Keep the filename and extension unchanged. Avoid rich-text editors that insert formatting or change line endings.
- Start the server again. The game reads the owner list during startup; editing while it is running does not apply the change immediately.
- Connect with the listed account. Join using the same Steam account represented by the ID and test an owner-only function.

76561198123456789The example shows the layout only. Replace the numbers with the actual SteamID64 values for your players. A blank line at the end is generally harmless, but adding text on an ID line is not.
Use a hosting panel’s Admins field instead
Some managed hosts provide an Admins field under server settings. Enter the SteamID64 value or values exactly as that panel specifies, apply the setting, then stop and start the server if the panel does not restart it automatically. Panels differ in whether they expect one ID per line, comma-separated values or a save-and-restart action, so follow the field’s on-screen format rather than guessing.

Both approaches ultimately supply the server with an owner list. A panel may hide the file, rename the setting in its interface or write the file only after you click an additional apply button.

Verify that owner access works
- Confirm the server completed a full restart after the change.
- Join with the exact Steam account whose SteamID64 was entered.
- Test an owner-only command or tool that you already use on your server.
- If access is absent, leave the player connected only long enough to test; then stop the server before correcting the file.
Owner status applies to the listed Steam account, not to every player using the same character, device or household. Adding a second person requires a second SteamID64 line.
Troubleshoot an admin who cannot use owner tools
1. The wrong file was edited
Search for duplicate files with similar names. The expected name is ownerswhitelist.txt. Guides sometimes show ownedwhitelist.txt or ownerwhitelist.txt as misspellings. If the server has more than one data directory, inspect the path used by the active instance and its dedicatedserver.cfg file.
2. The server was not restarted
Stopping and starting the service is required after a file edit. A browser refresh, a panel “save” button or reconnecting to the game does not necessarily reload the owner list.

Recheck that the entry is a decimal 17-digit number, usually beginning with 7656. Remove profile URLs, names, prefixes, punctuation and hexadecimal values. Compare the number with the player’s profile before trying again.

4. There is extra text or formatting
Open the file in a plain-text editor and inspect every line. Delete comments, quotation marks and trailing labels. Keep one numeric ID per line and save the file without changing its extension.
5. The player joined with another Steam account
Family members, alternate accounts and accounts used on a shared computer have different SteamID64 values. Ask the player to provide the profile for the account currently connected to the server.
6. The file was created in an inactive directory
Some hosts separate configuration, saves and executable files. A file in a similarly named folder will have no effect if the server launches with a different data path. Use the host’s file manager path associated with the running service, and check whether a launch option such as -userdatapath redirects data to another location.

7. The panel overwrote the edit
Configuration forms can regenerate files when you restart or change another setting. After saving an Admins field, reopen the field or file and confirm the ID is still present. If it disappeared, use the panel’s apply or save action before restarting.

In this setup, “admin” generally means an owner listed in ownerswhitelist.txt. The server grants permissions to the matching Steam account when it connects. It is not a separate role based on a nickname, and the owner list does not automatically grant permissions to unlisted players.
One hosting guide reports that an in-game administrative menu is disabled by default and can be activated by typing cheatstick, opening the developer console and pressing F1. Another guide describes the same sequence. This behavior is not confirmed by an official Endnight reference in the available material and may change between game builds, so treat it as a version-dependent option rather than a guaranteed requirement for every server.
Self-run server paths and launch options
Windows and Linux installations can place server data in different directories, especially when a launch option redirects user data. One hosting guide attributes a Windows default to a LocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDS folder and mentions -userdatapath for moving it, but that location was not confirmed on an official Endnight page. Use the path shown by your server’s launch configuration and verify it by locating the active dedicatedserver.cfg and the files created after a first startup.

If you operate multiple instances, each instance needs its own owner file in its own active data directory. Editing the file for Instance A will not grant access on Instance B.
Limits of the owner-file method
- There is no documented guarantee that a malformed entry will produce an error; failure can be silent.
- Permission changes are not live until the server reloads the file during a restart.
- Guides disagree on exact folders because hosts package the dedicated server differently.
- The available instructions come from hosting-provider documentation rather than a confirmed official Endnight administration manual, and some guides may be many months old. Recheck the procedure after a major game or server update.
- One guide says no official RCON interface is documented. Do not assume that a generic RCON tool can manage Sons of the Forest unless your host explicitly provides and supports it.
