To add an administrator, set an admin password in the server configuration, restart the server, and claim administrator access in game. On a Windows dedicated server, the setting is normally in ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. You can then use Settings > Server Settings and Make Me Admin, or run MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword> in the console.

How Conan Exiles server administration works
Conan Exiles uses a shared server administrator password rather than a normal in-game invitation to an admin role. The password is configured on the server first. A player who knows that password can authenticate in the game and obtain administrator status for the current session.

A whitelist determines who may join a server; it does not decide who can use administrative functions. An RCON command such as whitelistplayer <steamid> adds a Steam ID to the join whitelist, not to an administrator list.
There is also no reliably documented current workflow in the available guidance for granting admin automatically by Steam ID. An approximately decade-old forum thread about that idea contains a one-word negative reply, but its age means it should be treated as a warning rather than proof about every current game build.

What you need before changing the setting
- Server file access: You need permission to edit the dedicated server configuration, or access to the host’s Conan Exiles control panel.
- A planned maintenance window: The server must be restarted after the password is changed. Players connected at the time can be disconnected.
- A separate administrator password: Do not reuse a public player password or another account password. Anyone who knows the admin password can attempt to claim administrator status.
- The correct server instance: If you run several servers, confirm the port, save directory, or panel instance before editing anything. Changing the wrong configuration has no effect on the server your players use.
- A backup: Copy the existing configuration file before editing it. Keep the backup outside the live configuration directory so it cannot be mistaken for the active file.
Set the admin password on a Windows dedicated server
For Windows servers, setup guidance points to the ServerSettings.ini file below the Conan Exiles save configuration directory:
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.iniThe path is shown relative to the server installation. The exact absolute location depends on where the dedicated server was installed. If the directory contains more than one Conan Exiles installation, use the one that launches the active server.

Stop the server through its service, startup manager, or hosting panel before editing the file. Editing while the process is running can leave you unsure whether the game has written an older copy back over your change. Wait until the process has fully stopped.
2. Open the live ServerSettings.ini file
Make a backup, then open the live file in a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that adds formatting. Look for a [ServerSettings] section. Guidance for this setting shows the admin password as a key in that section:

[ServerSettings]
AdminPassword=yourpasswordReplace yourpassword with the password you intend to use. The example is not a password to copy. Keep the key on its own line and do not add quotation marks. If the file already has an AdminPassword entry, edit that entry rather than creating competing copies.
3. Save without changing the file type
Save the file as ServerSettings.ini, not ServerSettings.ini.txt. In Windows, file-extension hiding can make an accidentally renamed text file look correct. Check the full name if the setting appears to have no effect.
4. Restart the server
Start the same server instance again and allow it to finish loading before attempting to authenticate. A restart is part of the configuration change; simply saving the file while the server is running is not enough according to the available setup instructions.
Set the password through a rented-server control panel
Rented Conan Exiles servers commonly expose server settings in a web control panel. In that case, use the panel’s Conan Exiles server-settings page instead of editing files on the host machine.

- Open the control panel for the specific Conan Exiles instance.
- Stop the server if the panel requires it before changing configuration.
- Open the page labelled something like Server Settings, Configuration, or Advanced Settings. The exact label and layout vary by host.
- Find the administrator-password field. Some panels expose the underlying key as
AdminPassword; others use a friendlier label. - Enter a new, unique password and save the settings.
- Restart the server from the panel.
Do not assume that a panel’s general account password, FTP password, RCON password, or player password is the Conan Exiles administrator password. Use the field specifically associated with the server’s admin setting. If no such field exists, ask the host which configuration page controls AdminPassword; do not paste credentials into an unrelated field.
Claim administrator status in the game settings
Once the server has restarted with the password configured, connect with the player account that should receive administrative access.

- Press Esc to open the in-game menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Server Settings.
- Enter the configured administrator password.
- Enable or tick Make Me Admin.
The password must match the value currently loaded by the server. A change made in the file or panel but not followed by a restart will generally leave the old value active.

MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword>Replace <yourpassword> with the actual password, without typing the angle brackets. For example, if the configured password were Example-Only-42, the command would be:
MakeMeAdmin Example-Only-42Enter the command on the Conan Exiles server where the password was configured. A command entered while connected to a different server cannot grant administrator access on the intended instance.

If a password contains spaces or punctuation that the console interprets unexpectedly, use the settings-screen method or temporarily choose a password made of characters the server accepts consistently, then change it after testing. Do not publish the password in chat, screenshots, logs, or support tickets.
Remove administrator status
To relinquish the role for the current player, use the console command:
MakeMeNormalThis reverses the administrator status that was claimed with the admin password. It does not delete or change the password in ServerSettings.ini. Other people who know the password can still claim admin until you replace the password in the server configuration and restart.
Admin password versus Steam ID and whitelist commands
Why a Steam ID is not the normal admin-setting method
The setup guidance for this workflow describes a shared password, not a persistent list of Steam IDs. Adding a Steam ID to a configuration file is therefore not the documented path for granting admin. Because the only Steam-ID-specific discussion located for automatic admin assignment is old, treat claims that a current build supports Steam-ID admin assignment as unverified unless the live server documentation for that build confirms it.

What whitelistplayer does
The RCON command whitelistplayer <steamid> addresses joining access. It does not grant administrative privileges. A player can be allowed onto the server and still have no admin rights; conversely, knowing the admin password is what allows a connected player to claim the role.
Troubleshoot a failed admin login

Linux and Wine installations
The Windows configuration directory is the only platform-specific path identified in the available setup material. A Linux or Wine server may store an equivalent ServerSettings.ini under a different prefix and directory layout, but an exact current path and key format for those installations is not established here.
Do not blindly copy the Windows path into a Linux shell. Instead, use the server host’s documented configuration browser, locate the active ServerSettings.ini, and confirm that it contains the [ServerSettings] section before editing. If the host supplies a panel, that panel is preferable to guessing a Wine prefix. The password-then-restart-then-claim sequence remains the relevant workflow, but the file location should be confirmed for the particular build and host.
Security practices for shared administration
- Use a unique secret: The admin password should not match a public player password, a hosting-panel login, an RCON password, or a personal account password.
- Limit distribution: Give it only to trusted operators. Because the workflow is password-based, anyone who receives it can attempt to claim admin while connected.
- Change it after staff turnover: Edit the setting in the authoritative file or panel and restart the server so the old password is no longer active.
- Protect backups: A copy of
ServerSettings.inicontains the administrator password in plain text. Store backups with the same care as live credentials. - Keep commands private: Do not type the password into public chat or include it in screenshots, issue reports, or shared console transcripts.
- Document the active instance: Record which installation or panel instance owns the setting so another operator does not edit a dormant server directory.
A repeatable operator checklist
- Identify the live Conan Exiles server instance.
- Stop it cleanly.
- Back up its current configuration.
- Set
AdminPassword=yourpasswordunder[ServerSettings], or enter the equivalent value in the host panel. - Save the setting without changing the filename or file type.
- Restart the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Connect as the intended operator.
- Use Esc > Settings > Server Settings > Make Me Admin, or run
MakeMeAdmin <yourpassword>. - Remove the role with
MakeMeNormalwhen it is no longer needed. - Replace the password and restart whenever an unauthorized person may have learned it.
What is and is not established for this procedure
The core workflow is clear: configure an admin password, restart the server, and authenticate in game through the server-settings screen or MakeMeAdmin. The reversal command is MakeMeNormal, and RCON whitelisting is not an admin grant.
