1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo add a basic age gate in WordPress, install and activate an age-gate plugin, choose whether it applies site-wide or only to selected content, configure its prompt and denial behavior, then test the result with your caching setup. That kind of gate usually relies on a visitor’s own answer; it does not automatically verify identity or prove that a site meets legal requirements.
Choose the kind of age check your site needs
Start by deciding what must be restricted: the whole site, specific pages or posts, or a transaction such as a WooCommerce checkout. A gate displayed over a page is not necessarily the same as withholding that page’s content from the response. If a visitor must not receive the protected content before passing a check, verify how the plugin enforces access rather than relying on the appearance of its prompt.

| Approach | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Self-declared age gate | Asks a visitor to confirm an age or enter a date of birth. Age Gate’s WordPress.org listing describes whole-site and selected-content rules, along with several self-declared input styles. | Whether self-declaration is adequate for your purpose; whether the content is covered or withheld; and how cookies and caches affect the gate. |
| Server-side content withholding | Can keep protected markup out of a response until the visitor passes the rule. AgeWall’s WordPress.org listing distinguishes a “withhold” action from an “overlay” mode that still sends the page. | Check direct URLs, feeds, APIs, cached pages, search-bot behavior, and every route that can expose the content. A vendor listing is not an independent security audit. |
| External verification integration | Connects a verification service to particular WordPress or WooCommerce flows. AgeOnce documents checkout and content coverage; Token of Trust lists age- and identity-verification workflows. | Confirm exactly which steps are covered, what personal data is processed, service availability and cost, fallback behavior, and whether the method fits the applicable obligation. |
Compare options on verification strength, enforcement method, content and checkout coverage, privacy and data handling, accessibility, cache compatibility, supported geographies, support, and recurring cost. The available documentation does not provide a current, comparable basis for ranking vendors.

2. Set the scope before enabling the rule
Choose whether the gate applies to all content or only selected posts and pages. For a selected-content setup, Age Gate’s listing describes a checkbox on content pages. Review access settings and excluded post types before applying a broad rule, especially if some pages need to remain available without a prompt.
3. Set the prompt and denial behavior
Enter the minimum age you intend to use and choose an available input style, such as an age confirmation or date-of-birth entry. Configure branding and, where supported, a legal note, failure message, or redirect. These are plugin settings, not a determination that a particular age threshold or method satisfies a legal duty.
4. Test both outcomes and every relevant route
Use a private or incognito window to test the experience as a visitor without an existing gate cookie. AgeOnce’s setup documentation also recommends an incognito test. Check an allowed response and a denied response, and verify the actual routes that matter to your site:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open a restricted page through its direct URL, not only through site navigation.
- Test embedded or shortcode content and any behavior for logged-in visitors.
- If the restriction relates to sales, test the relevant WooCommerce product and checkout actions.
- After changing settings, clear page, hosting, and CDN caches, then repeat the tests.
5. Check what the visitor’s browser actually receives
If content must not be delivered before a check, determine whether the selected enforcement method withholds server-rendered markup. A visual overlay may obscure content in the browser while leaving it in the page response. AgeWall’s listing describes this distinction between its withhold and overlay actions; verify the behavior of the particular plugin and configuration you use.
Troubleshoot gates that do not appear or persist
Caching can change whether the prompt appears or whether a visitor’s choice persists as expected. Age Gate documents a JavaScript mode and an uncachable version as configuration or troubleshooting options. If the gate behaves inconsistently, review those plugin options and your cache rules, clear the relevant caches, and retest in a private window. Check both the first visit and a return visit so you can see whether the gate is being shown or remembered as intended.

Legal requirements depend on jurisdiction, service classification, audience, content, and transaction type. The UK Online Safety Act does not impose a blanket rule on every WordPress site. Sections 12 and 81 establish age-verification or age-estimation duties for specified regulated services and content; in those contexts, the method must be highly effective at correctly determining whether a user is a child. Section 81’s regulated-pornography duty also includes records about methods and privacy considerations, as well as a public summary.

The US Federal Trade Commission’s February 2026 COPPA policy statement describes a limited, temporary enforcement policy for certain operators that process personal information solely to determine age under stated conditions. It remains effective until final rule amendments or withdrawal. It is not a general endorsement of every age gate or a conclusion that a particular site complies with COPPA.
A GOV.UK page publishing Ofcom’s July 16, 2026 report says it examines early evidence from the first six months of relevant duties and does not provide final conclusions on effectiveness. For your own site, identify the applicable jurisdiction, service classification, audience, and transaction, then consult relevant official guidance or qualified counsel when needed. Do not treat a plugin listing or installation as proof of compliance.
