To add an administrator, identify the player’s platform ID, then either run admin add <ID> 0 in the server console or add an administrator entry to the server’s generated admin XML file and restart the server. Permission level 0 is the full-administrator level described by current server guides.

The exact XML filename, folder and attribute names vary by game version and hosting panel. Use the structure your own server created rather than copying an example from a different release. Steam players use a SteamID64; Epic players use an EOS ID.

If you can use a console, it avoids locating the correct file. If you have file access but no console, edit the XML while the server is stopped.
Get the correct platform ID
SteamID64 for Steam players
A Steam player is normally identified by a 17-digit SteamID64, commonly beginning with 7656. A custom profile URL can hide the numeric ID, so use a SteamID lookup service such as steamid.io or copy the numeric value from the player’s Steam profile URL when the profile has no custom alias.

Do not use a display name as a permanent identifier. Names can change, and similarly named players can cause you to grant access to the wrong account.

Epic Online Services accounts
Epic accounts use an EOS ID rather than a SteamID64. The newer XML format identifies the platform in a platform attribute, such as EOS, and stores the EOS value in userid. Do not paste a Steam ID into an EOS entry or assume that a Steam-formatted example applies to an Epic account.

Method 1: Add an admin with the console
The console approach is the shortest route when your host panel, RCON client or dedicated-server console accepts commands.
- Connect to the authenticated server console. A normal in-game chat window is not necessarily the server console; use the console or RCON interface supplied by your server setup.
- Obtain the player’s ID with
listplayeridsorlpi, or use the verified SteamID64/EOS ID you already have. - Run the administrator command. Guides show this form for a Steam account:

serveradmin.xmland applies it immediately. - Have the player reconnect, or test an administrator-only command from that account. If the command is rejected, inspect the server log or use the XML method below to verify what was written.
For an Epic account, use the EOS identifier and the syntax accepted by your server build. Because command parsing can differ between releases, copy the platform prefix and spacing used by your console’s help output or by an entry the server generated.
Method 2: Edit the administrator XML file
Find the generated file
serveradmin.xml is the most commonly cited filename. Its location is not universal. One current hosting guide places it at:

/.local/share/7DaysToDie/Saves/serveradmin.xmlThat path may be reached through a host panel’s Files tab, while a self-managed server can expose a different data root. Another guide places the file in the world-save folder and notes that it may not exist until the server has started at least once.
Some guides also mention serveradmincustom.xml for persistent administrators. Its administrator block is often commented out until you enable it. Treat that as a version- and host-dependent option, not a universal replacement for serveradmin.xml.
- Start the server once if no administrator file has been created.
- Stop the server completely before editing. A running process can rewrite the file or ignore changes made while it is active.
- Use the host panel’s file browser or the server’s save directory to locate the file actually generated by your installation.
- Download or copy the file before editing so you can restore it if the XML becomes invalid.
Match the XML schema your server created
Current guides describe a newer administrator entry with attributes for the platform, user ID, label and permission level. A representative shape is:

Older releases and forum examples use a Steam-specific attribute instead:
<admin steamID="7656…" permission_level="0" />Both examples belong inside the file’s administrator block, commonly an <admins> element. Do not combine attributes from the two formats. Open an existing entry, or use the empty administrator block already present in your file, and follow its spelling, quotation marks and nesting.
Add the account safely
- Open the stopped server’s XML file in a plain-text editor.
- Locate the existing administrator block. If it is commented out in
serveradmincustom.xml, remove only the comment markers around the block after confirming that this is the file your version uses. - Add one entry for the account, using the platform identifier and the permission level required.
- Keep the opening and closing tags balanced. XML is case-sensitive; an extra character can prevent the server from loading the file.
- Save the file as XML or plain text, preserving the original filename and extension.
- Start the server and watch the startup console for XML or configuration errors.
For a Steam account, the value after steamID or userid is the numeric SteamID64, not a profile nickname. For an Epic account, use the EOS value and the newer platform-aware form when your generated file uses it.

Use the smallest level that meets the job. A server can define a minimum permission level for an individual command with a cmd attribute and a permission_level value. For example, a moderator at level 100 might be allowed to kick players but not shut down the server. The precise command rules come from the server’s generated configuration and version, so inspect those entries before assigning a broad role.
Verify that the new administrator works
- Confirm that the ID in the console output or XML entry belongs to the intended person.
- Restarted servers should be fully online before testing. Console-added administrators may take effect without a restart, but reconnecting the player gives you a clean permission test.
- Ask the new administrator to run a harmless command that their assigned level should allow.
- If a full administrator cannot use an expected command, compare the entry with another working entry, check the platform value and inspect startup or command logs.
A successful login or connection does not prove that administrator rights loaded. The permission check must be performed against the server, not just the game client.
Troubleshooting common failures
The file cannot be found
Start the server once, stop it, and search the world-save and server data folders for serveradmin.xml. Host panels can present a virtual root, so the path shown in a guide may not be the path shown in your Files tab. Check for serveradmincustom.xml only if your installation generated it or your host documentation identifies it.

- Make sure the server was fully stopped before saving the file.
- Confirm that you edited the active world’s file, not a backup or a different save.
- Check that the entry is inside the administrator block and that the file remains well-formed XML.
- Use the attribute names already present in the generated file; do not replace a newer
platform/useridentry with an oldersteamIDexample. - Verify the ID digit by digit and ensure the player is using the same platform represented by the entry.
The console command is rejected
- Confirm that you are connected to the server console or RCON, not merely typing in player chat.
- Try the exact syntax accepted by your release, including the
steam_prefix shown in the guide’s Steam example. - Replace a name with the numeric platform ID to avoid spaces, duplicate names or changed nicknames.
- Check that your own console account has permission to grant administrator status.
The player is still treated as a regular user
Recheck whether the account is Steam or Epic, then compare the ID with listplayerids/lpi. A SteamID64 and an EOS ID are not interchangeable. For a file edit, restart after saving and look for a parse error during startup. For a console edit, inspect the response and the resulting administrator file to see whether the server accepted the command.
The server fails to start after an edit
Stop trying to modify the file in place. Restore the backup you made before editing, then start the server to confirm that the backup is valid. Reapply one change at a time, preserving the generated structure and using a plain-text editor. A malformed XML tag, an unmatched quote or an entry outside the expected administrator block can prevent loading.
