In current datarhei Restreamer, add YouTube as a Publication Service, enter your YouTube streaming ID (stream key), save, and start the publication. You need a configured video source and a YouTube account set up to stream. After Restreamer connects, its main window displays the stream bitrate. See the official Restreamer YouTube guide.
Before you add the stream key
- Configure a video source in Restreamer. The publication sends the output from a source to YouTube; it does not create the video source for you. Restreamer’s Quick Start covers adding a source and optionally setting up audio.
- Have a YouTube account and live stream ready to use. Restreamer requires an active account on the external service. YouTube’s current eligibility requirements and Studio screens can change, so consult its live-stream encoder controls rather than relying on an outdated click-by-click path.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not paste the real key into public documentation, screenshots, or messages. The example below is only a placeholder.
Get the YouTube stream key
In YouTube Studio, use the live-stream or encoder controls to find the stream key for the stream you intend to publish. Restreamer’s guide calls this a valid YouTube “streaming ID.” Copy it carefully; anyone with access to the key may be able to send a broadcast to the associated stream. Do not use a key shown in a public example.

Add YouTube in the current Restreamer interface
- Open Restreamer and go to Publication Service.
- Select YouTube as the publication service. If it is not already configured, add the YouTube service.
- Enter the key in the streaming ID field, for example
[YOUR_YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY](do not use that placeholder as a real key). - Save the publication settings.
- Start the YouTube publication.
When the connection succeeds, Restreamer says the live stream bitrate appears in the main window. The service setup is documented in the Publication services manual.
Verify the broadcast and end it safely
Check the Restreamer main window for the connected stream and displayed bitrate, then confirm the stream is behaving as expected in YouTube’s live controls. Restreamer’s guide warns that interrupting the stream in Restreamer during a live event may prevent YouTube from saving it in the DVR archive. If preserving the archive matters, end the stream on YouTube first after the event, as the Restreamer guide advises.

Troubleshoot a YouTube publication that will not connect
- Review the publication process details and logs. Restreamer identifies these as the places to investigate connection problems.
- Check the copied streaming ID. As a practical check, confirm there are no missing or extra characters and that you used the key for the intended YouTube stream.
- Check YouTube’s live setup. As a practical check, verify that the account and stream are available to go live in YouTube Studio. Current eligibility rules and interface labels are not specified by Restreamer’s setup guide.
- Confirm the source is running. A YouTube publication sends the configured Restreamer output; make sure the video source and any needed audio are configured and available.
Do not post the key when asking for help. If a key has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream controls before publishing again.
Current instructions versus the deprecated 0.6.x guide
Use Publication Service in the current documentation. An older Restreamer 0.6.x page describes an External Streaming-Server checkbox and RTMP form, but it is explicitly marked deprecated. Those legacy labels and steps do not describe the current interface; see the archived 0.6.x YouTube guide only if you are maintaining that older version.

Home-server networking and protocol context
The official Restreamer project documents Docker deployment for AMD64 and ARM systems and provides a Raspberry Pi-oriented image, so a compatible home server or ARM single-board computer can host it. Router port forwarding may be needed when you want to reach the Restreamer service from outside your home network; that does not mean every outbound publication to YouTube requires inbound forwarding.
For a normal YouTube destination, the built-in YouTube publication service is the straightforward choice. Restreamer also documents HLS, RTMP, and SRT for other publication paths. Its manual describes HLS latency as dependent on its configured value (minimum 10–30 seconds), RTMP as about 1–2 seconds, and SRT as under one second. These are Restreamer’s general descriptions, not guarantees for an end-to-end YouTube stream. Check compatibility with the destination and source path before choosing a different protocol.
