Make the countdown a video clip, place it between the playlist videos, and send the ordered sequence to the same FFmpeg output that feeds YouTube Live. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when every file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases; if they differ, normalize the clips with the concat filter and re-encode.
Choose how the countdown should work
Decide how long the slate should last, what it should look like, and what viewers should hear. A fixed-duration clip is straightforward to insert into a static playlist. Match its resolution and frame rate to the surrounding videos when practical, and decide whether its audio should be silent, contain music, or continue a background audio bed.

The countdown belongs in the encoder’s outgoing media sequence. It does not create another YouTube broadcast or schedule an event. YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the watchable event—from the stream, the incoming audio-video feed; one stream can be reused for broadcasts scheduled at different times. Create the countdown clip
FFmpeg’s color source can create a background, and its drawtext filter can overlay text. A countdown can be driven by elapsed clip time in a drawtext expression. Use an explicit available font file if FFmpeg cannot locate a suitable font automatically. The FFmpeg filters documentation describes these filters and their options.

For example, a 30-second slate can display a countdown from 30 to 1. Set the clip’s frame rate and dimensions to match the videos where possible. If the other playlist items contain audio, giving the slate a silent audio stream can help keep the stream layout consistent. The specific filter expression depends on the desired text, font, frame rate, and audio arrangement; preview the generated file to confirm that the timer changes at the intended pace and ends cleanly.
Choose the right FFmpeg concatenation method

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation sets out the matching-stream requirements and duration behavior. Its concatenation FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. These are distinct workflows: the demuxer is not a way to safely join arbitrary mismatched files without preparing them first.

Build and run a concat-demuxer playlist
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the slate and playlist videos expose the same stream layout and use matching codecs and time bases. Pay attention to audio: if some items have audio and others do not, the changing layout can make this workflow unsuitable unless you prepare the clips consistently.
- Prepare the playlist file. Add a
filedirective for each item, in playback order. Add the countdown clip after each video that should be followed by a slate. For example:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'video1.mp4' file 'countdown.mp4' file 'video2.mp4' file 'countdown.mp4'The optional
ffconcat version 1.0signature must be exact and on the first line for automatic recognition. Escape file paths correctly; the-safe 0option in the example below permits paths that would otherwise be rejected by the demuxer’s safety checks. - Configure the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, then copy its current server URL and stream key into the encoder output configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this process. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public logs or shared scripts.
- Start FFmpeg with a live-paced input. This illustrative command loops the concat input and encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC before sending FLV to the YouTube ingest endpoint. Replace the placeholders with the actual ingest URL and stream key, and choose settings suited to the source and machine:

Confirm the installed FFmpeg supports the options used and check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations before relying on it.
- Complete a scheduled go-live. If you scheduled a broadcast, start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room; then select Go live. Sending a feed does not by itself publish a scheduled event.
Use the concat filter when inputs need normalization
If files have different codecs, stream layouts, dimensions, or other incompatible parameters, normalize them and join them with the concat filter rather than assuming the demuxer will reconcile them. The filter workflow re-encodes, so it takes additional CPU and may reduce quality compared with preserving compatible encoded files. Match the video and audio characteristics you want in the final stream, and check that every segment produces the same output streams before sending it live. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating video explains the filter option for cases where re-encoding is required.
Check the sequence before going live
- Verify the slate duration and confirm that its timer counts down as intended.
- Listen across each transition for silence, abrupt cuts, or changes in audio level.
- Confirm the slate and videos have compatible stream layouts if using the concat demuxer.
- Check that file durations are represented accurately. The demuxer adjusts timestamps based on durations; inaccurate metadata can cause visible or audible artifacts. FFmpeg documents an explicit duration directive for cases where metadata is inaccurate.
- Preview a local output or use a private or unlisted scheduled stream to inspect transitions before relying on the sequence live. This is a prudent check, not a guarantee that every input will behave identically in production.
Troubleshoot common problems
The playlist will not open or files are rejected
Check the list syntax, confirm that the optional signature is exact and on the first line, and correct any path quoting or escaping. If paths require it, verify that the input command uses -safe 0 and that the referenced files exist and are readable.

The concat demuxer produces glitches at a transition
First check whether every file has the same streams, codecs, and time base. Then inspect duration metadata, since timestamp adjustment depends on durations. Correct the duration information where needed or prepare compatible files and use the concat filter if normalization and re-encoding are necessary.
Audio drops out or changes at the slate
Compare the audio streams across every playlist item. A slate without audio can change the stream layout when the other files contain audio; adding a silent audio stream to the slate may preserve a consistent layout. If the sources otherwise differ, normalize them through the concat filter.

The scheduled broadcast has no visible live picture
Confirm that FFmpeg is using the current YouTube server URL and stream key and that the encoder is running. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live; starting the feed alone does not complete that step.
Account for YouTube’s broadcast and archive behavior
Adding a slate changes the content arriving through the encoder; it does not create a new broadcast. YouTube Help currently says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a YouTube platform condition, not a limit imposed by an FFmpeg playlist, and platform policies can change. Check YouTube’s current encoder and live-stream guidance when planning a long-running stream.
