You generally can’t add a watermark in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe’s Reader FAQ says PDF editing requires Acrobat software; the desktop watermark workflow is in Acrobat’s editing tools. If your app has no Edit or Watermark controls, you’ll need an editing-capable Acrobat product or another PDF editor.

In Acrobat desktop, use Edit > Watermark > Add to place text or an image on a PDF. Adobe describes a watermark as fixed text or an image embedded in the page, used to indicate ownership, apply branding, or mark content as confidential.

Can you add a watermark in free Adobe Acrobat Reader?

Adobe’s free Reader is primarily for viewing, printing, signing, sharing, and annotating PDFs. Adobe says editing PDFs requires Acrobat software, and its watermark instructions describe Acrobat on desktop—not a feature guaranteed to appear in Reader. The workflow below applies when you have an editing-capable desktop version of Acrobat.

How to add a watermark in Acrobat desktop

  1. Open the PDF you want to mark in Acrobat desktop and select Edit.
  2. In the left pane, select Watermark > Add.
  3. In the Add Watermark dialog, choose Text and enter your wording, or choose File to add an image.
  4. Set the watermark’s appearance, including opacity, rotation, size, and placement. Use the vertical and horizontal position controls to place it on the page.
  5. Select OK to apply the watermark.

For an image watermark, Adobe recommends a transparent PNG. Its guide also lists PDF, JPEG, and BMP as supported image formats. Review the result to ensure the image or text is legible without obscuring important content.

Apply a watermark to multiple PDFs

Acrobat desktop can apply a watermark to a batch of PDFs through Apply to Multiple Files.

If Watermark controls are missing or an update fails

  • No Edit or Watermark option: Confirm that you are using Acrobat desktop’s editing workflow. Free Reader does not necessarily include PDF editing controls; Adobe says editing requires Acrobat software.
  • The PDF will not accept an edit: Check its security and permissions. Adobe notes that updating watermarks may not work on secured PDFs or PDFs with form fields.
  • You are changing an existing watermark: Use Update cautiously. Adobe says it modifies only the first watermark added and removes any additional watermarks. Inspect the output before replacing or saving the document.
