Finish and save the webpage PDF, calculate SHA-256 from the saved file, then record the full hexadecimal digest in a separate checksum file or archive manifest that names the PDF. If the PDF changes later, calculate a new digest. A detached checksum lets you check whether a file matches a saved reference without changing the PDF itself.
Calculate SHA-256 for the final PDF
First complete any edits, OCR, metadata changes, or signature operations that belong in the archived PDF. Then run the command for your operating system from the PDF’s folder, or supply the file’s full path.

Save the digest with enough context
Put the digest in a sidecar text file, such as archived-page.pdf.sha256.txt, or add it to the archive’s manifest. Identify the exact PDF the digest describes. For a webpage capture, useful context includes the source URL and capture date, when known.

Verify the PDF later
- Run the same SHA-256 command against the PDF you want to check.
- Compare every hexadecimal character in the new output with the saved reference digest.
- If they differ, confirm that you checked the same file version and used SHA-256. A mismatch means the file does not match that reference; it does not by itself explain why.
A matching digest means the checked file has the same digest as the file represented by the reference value. It is a useful integrity check only if the reference digest itself is trusted and preserved.
Why the checksum should usually stay outside the PDF
Adding the digest as text inside the PDF changes the PDF’s bytes. The digest would then describe the earlier version rather than the modified file, so you would need to calculate and record a new digest. A separate sidecar or manifest avoids that self-changing loop and keeps the PDF unchanged.

What a SHA-256 match can—and cannot—show
A digest is a compact fingerprint for comparing a file against a reference. A match supports the conclusion that the checked file matches the reference digest. By itself, it does not establish who created the PDF, when it was captured, whether the webpage was captured completely, or whether the reference digest is authentic. Preserve provenance and capture context alongside the file and checksum. NARA describes web-record integrity as completeness and lack of alteration, while also emphasizing reliability, authenticity, usability, context, and structural relationships.
A PDF is not necessarily a complete website record
A webpage PDF can omit links, interactive behavior, referenced resources, or related pages. For federal web-record transfers, NARA guidance calls for applicable packages to retain component parts, original links, functionality, data integrity, internally referenced URLs, and harvesting control information; its preferred formats include WARC 1.0/1.1 and WACZ. Those formats are not mandatory for every personal or organizational archive, but they illustrate the difference between preserving a PDF representation and preserving a broader website record.

Do not confuse a checksum, a PDF signature, and PDF/A

Adobe’s Acrobat security preferences describe SHA-256 as the default signing algorithm for Acrobat 9.1 and later, with a possible fallback to SHA-1 when a token cannot support SHA-256. That version-specific signing behavior concerns digital signatures, not the detached checksum commands above.
