These are different features. For full-text search, put the PDFs in the WordPress Media Library, make sure their text is selectable, and configure a PDF-aware indexing tool. Then give visitors a library page or listing where they can browse and search.
Choose what “searchable” means for your library
A search box can return a PDF because its title or attachment record matches a query without searching the words inside the file. A separate viewer search may find a word inside the PDF currently open, but that does not make the document’s text searchable across your whole site.

- Browse or filter a library: Visitors see a collection of documents and navigate it, potentially using categories or filters.
- Find attachment records: Site search can return a PDF attachment or its associated page based on indexed WordPress content. That alone does not establish full-text indexing.
- Search PDF contents: Site search can match words in the document itself. This requires a PDF-aware indexing solution and readable text in the file.
- Search within an open PDF: A viewer may provide a find tool for the individual document. Treat it as a reading feature, not as site-wide search.
Decide which of these behaviors you need before choosing plugins. A library may combine a browsable listing, site-wide full-text search, and an inline viewer, but one feature should not be assumed to provide the others.
Set up full-text PDF search
1. Put the files in the Media Library
The documented SearchWP workflow requires indexed documents to be in the WordPress Media Library. Its FAQ says it cannot index files stored outside that library through a separate document-management system. If your PDFs live elsewhere, first determine whether you can move or upload them to the Media Library or whether another tool supports your storage setup.
#1 Best Overall
Use clear file titles and descriptive information so visitors can recognize results. This is practical library guidance, not a special naming requirement established by SearchWP.
2. Check that the PDF contains selectable text
Open representative files and try copying a sentence from each one into a text field. If you can select and copy the words, the PDF has text that an indexing tool may be able to read. SearchWP’s guidance says the PDF text must be readable. A scanned page that consists only of an image may not be searchable through this method unless text is made available in the document; the cited guidance does not establish a particular OCR workflow.

3. Configure document-content indexing
SearchWP’s guide describes adding the Document Content attribute to Media in a SearchWP Engine. Follow the plugin’s current instructions to configure and update its index. Do not assume that including attachment pages in WordPress search performs this extraction: attachment search and indexing words from PDF contents are separate capabilities.

Indexing helps determine what can match; visitors still need a place to browse the documents and submit a query. Create a library page or document listing and make its search behavior clear. FileBird Document Library describes a front-end document library, while WebEquipe PDF Search describes a PDF-focused search form and integration with site search. The available descriptions do not establish that FileBird indexes PDF contents, so verify that any option you choose meets your specific full-text requirement.
5. Test both titles and words inside files
After updating the index, try one query that matches a file title and another distinctive word that appears only in a PDF’s body. Check that results lead to the intended file or library entry. If results appear for titles but not for document-only terms, the library may be searching attachment metadata rather than PDF text, or the file may not contain readable text.
Choose the right combination of tools
| Approach | What it can do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Include attachment pages in native WordPress search | Make attachment records discoverable in search results. | The cited PDF Embedder guide provides code to include attachment pages; it does not document full-text PDF extraction. |
| SearchWP document-content indexing | Search for words inside readable PDFs in the Media Library. | The PDFs need readable text and must be in the Media Library for the cited workflow. |
| PDF Embedder viewer | Display a PDF inline; its documentation describes a premium toolbar feature for searching within the open PDF. | Within-document viewer search is not the same as site-wide search. |
| FileBird Document Library | Present files as a front-end document library. | The available listing does not establish full-text PDF-content indexing. |
| WebEquipe PDF Search | Provide a PDF-focused search form and site-search integration. | Verify current behavior and compatibility with your site and document types. |
When comparing options, check whether results search document text or only titles and metadata, whether files must be in the Media Library, how scanned files are handled, whether a browsable front end is included, and how readers open or download results. Compatibility and maintenance details are not established by the cited feature descriptions, so check current plugin information for your WordPress setup.

Add an inline PDF viewer only if readers need it
If visitors should read documents without leaving the library page, embed them with a PDF viewer block or shortcode. PDF Embedder documents this display workflow and describes full-text search in its viewer toolbar as a premium feature. That toolbar searches within the open file; it does not by itself make the PDF’s contents available to site-wide search.
Test the embedded document on desktop and mobile, and consider providing a direct file link for readers who prefer to open or download it. Keep the viewing experience separate from the library’s site-wide search configuration.
Verify the finished library
- Search for a title or other descriptive information associated with a PDF.
- Search for a distinctive term found only in the body of a text-readable PDF.
- Open results and confirm they lead to the intended document or library entry.
- Check that files with image-only pages behave as expected; do not assume their text is indexed.
- Confirm that search and file access respect any restrictions you have set on documents.
- If PDFs are embedded, check the viewer and direct links on desktop and mobile.
PDF Embedder frames the attachment-search use case as helping visitors find PDF documents through site search. Its documented attachment-page inclusion and SearchWP’s document-content indexing address different parts of that problem: choose and test each capability according to what your visitors need to find.
