Choose Edit > Stroke.

Enter the stroke width in pixels.

Choose Inside, Center, or Outside for Location. The choice controls how the stroke sits relative to the selection boundary.

Optionally set the blending mode and opacity, then select OK.
Adobe describes this command as creating a colored border around a selection or layer. It paints the stroke onto the current layer, rather than leaving the border as a separate selection marquee. Adobe’s instructions for applying a colored stroke were updated December 2, 2025.

Understand the dashed selection boundary
The moving dashed line around an active selection—often called “marching ants”—is a temporary indicator, not a colored outline painted into the image. It disappears when you deselect. To remove it, choose Select > Deselect, or press Ctrl+D on Windows or Command+D on macOS. Adobe’s selection-tools overview, updated September 28, 2026, explains selection boundaries and tools.
Choose the right approach for the edge you need
For a smoother edge
Enable anti-aliasing in a supported selection tool before making the selection to smooth the transition at edge pixels. This affects the selection boundary; it is not a stroke-position option.

For a soft transition
Feather the selection when you want a transition zone that softens its boundary. Feathering changes the edge rather than simply adding a crisp colored stroke.
To improve a cutout
Use Select and Mask to refine the selection edge before applying a stroke. Adobe covers anti-aliasing, feathering, and edge refinement in its selection-edge guidance, updated February 23, 2026.
For a frame layer
If you are outlining a frame layer rather than painting around an active selection, select the frame layer and open its fx or Stroke options. There you can set the stroke type—solid color, gradient, or pattern—as well as its color, size, and position. This is a layer-style workflow, distinct from Edit > Stroke for a selection. For a path-based outline
A closed path can be converted to a selection, with options for rendering and how the selection operation is applied. A selection can also be converted to a path; tolerance affects how many anchor points are used and how smooth the resulting path is. Fix common Stroke problems
Edit > Stroke is unavailable
Adobe notes that the selected layer may be a shape, text, or Smart Object. Rasterizing can make the command available, but it changes the layer’s editable representation. If preserving editability matters, consider an appropriate layer-style stroke instead of rasterizing. Adobe’s Stroke instructions describe the command and this limitation.
The outside stroke is not visible
An outside stroke may not appear when the layer’s contents fill the entire image. In that situation, the stroke has no visible canvas area beyond the layer’s edge.
Which outline method should you use?

Choose based on what the outline belongs to and whether you want a painted result or a layer effect. For a sharp or softened boundary, adjust selection edge quality separately from stroke placement.
