Keep your radio audio running in your encoder, add the microphone as a separate audio source, and control that microphone independently. In OBS Studio, you can use the mixer’s mute button or a push-to-talk hotkey to speak over the music without stopping the stream.
Set up the microphone without interrupting the radio audio
The key is to keep the source carrying your continuous radio program active while controlling the microphone separately. A single OBS scene with both sources is usually the simplest arrangement.
- Keep the radio source in place. Do not remove or mute the source that supplies the continuing music or radio program.
- Add a separate microphone source. In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source and select the microphone you want to use. A USB microphone can connect directly to a compatible computer; an XLR microphone may need a suitable audio interface or mixer, depending on your equipment.
- Check the microphone meter. Speak at your usual distance and volume. Confirm that the microphone’s meter moves in the OBS mixer, then adjust its level so your voice is audible alongside the program audio.
- Listen to the mix. Use audio monitoring or make a short recording, then listen back. A meter can show that audio is present, but listening is how you check the actual balance and whether the voice is clear over the music.
- Test the voice-break control. Leave the radio source running and use the microphone’s mixer mute button to turn the mic on for an announcement and off afterward. Alternatively, configure a push-to-talk or push-to-mute hotkey for the microphone.
- Test the stream output. Try a representative passage of music and a voice break, check the stream preview, and monitor the audio before relying on the setup.
Avoid doubled microphone audio and accidental music interruptions
Check for duplicate microphone capture
OBS can capture a microphone as a scene source or as a global device in Settings → Audio. If the same microphone is enabled through both routes, the duplicated audio can cause echo. Use one route for that device: either keep the scene source and disable the duplicate global capture, or use the global device and remove the duplicate scene source.
Be careful when using a separate break scene
A dedicated scene can include a scene-specific microphone input, but switching scenes may also remove the music source. If you choose this arrangement, ensure the continuous program audio is present in the break scene or routed independently. Otherwise, keep the mic in the radio scene and mute or unmute it separately.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the room and input device
If you do not have a suitable voice input, a USB microphone is one straightforward option when it is compatible with your computer. For an XLR microphone, check whether your existing equipment provides the connection and routing it needs before buying an interface or mixer. The right choice depends on your equipment and recording conditions; these setup steps do not establish a best microphone model.
Connect OBS to YouTube and confirm the live mix
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Enter those details in your encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start the encoder stream and confirm that the YouTube preview receives the program audio.
- With the radio source still active, unmute the mic or use your configured talk control. Listen to the live output during the announcement, then mute the mic again.
Test with the kind of music and speaking level you expect to use, and continue monitoring the stream. A successful preview alone does not confirm that the mic is balanced well or that it is muted when you intend it to be.

Do not confuse a YouTube break overlay with a voice break
YouTube’s Live Control Room break overlay is a visual slate for when you step away; it does not mix, mute, or otherwise control OBS audio sources. For an actual spoken announcement over continuing radio audio, use the encoder’s separate microphone source and mic control. YouTube advises muting the microphone when stepping away. If the slate itself has audio, that audio must be included through the encoder if you want viewers to hear it.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The mic meter does not move: Check that OBS is using the intended microphone and that the selected device is available to the operating system. Speak into it again and confirm that the correct source is active.
- Viewers hear an echo: Check whether the microphone is captured both as a scene source and under Settings → Audio. Disable one of the duplicate routes.
- The voice is too quiet or too loud: Adjust the microphone level while speaking at your normal distance, then listen to a test recording or monitored mix with the radio audio playing.
- The music stops when you switch to the break scene: The music source may not be present in that scene. Add it there or route it independently; alternatively, use one scene and control only the microphone.
- The mic stays open after the announcement: Check the mixer mute state or your push-to-talk/push-to-mute binding. Test the control before going live so you know which state leaves the microphone audible.
- The preview has no sound from the slate: A visual break overlay does not supply or control audio. Add the slate’s audio as an encoder source if it should be heard.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for keeping a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, not for taking a live microphone input or broadcasting a live camera. If your radio program is an uploaded recording or playlist and you do not need live spoken breaks, its cloud service can loop that material while your computer is off. To include a spoken break, record and add it to the program before uploading; StreamNeo does not provide a live-mic control.
