How to Add a Matter Device to SmartThings When Setup Fails

When SmartThings cannot add a Matter device, check controller compatibility and pairing mode first. Use the QR code or enter its setup code, then troubleshoot Thread support, signal, and network selection.

If SmartThings cannot add your Matter device, first check that the device is in pairing mode and that your SmartThings home has a compatible Matter controller. For Thread devices, that controller also needs access to a Thread border router. Then retry using the device’s QR code—or enter its setup code manually—and check the controller, network, and signal if pairing still fails.

What you need before pairing

Matter onboarding involves the device, the phone running SmartThings, and a Matter controller. SmartThings describes the phone as the commissioner that facilitates onboarding; the controller is responsible for controlling the device afterward. Make sure a supported controller is already added to your SmartThings home.

SmartThings’ compatibility article lists Android with SmartThings app version 1.7.91 or later, or iOS 16.2 or later with app version 1.6.94 or later, for using the app as commissioner. It lists firmware 45.9 or later for the Samsung Matter controllers it covers. These are the requirements stated in that support article; check the current requirements for your model and region at SmartThings’ Matter compatibility guidance, since requirements can change.

SmartThings names the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as controller examples. Its 2015 Hub can support Wi-Fi/LAN Matter but does not have a Thread router built in. A Thread device on that hub needs a compatible third-party Thread border router.

Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Add the Matter device in SmartThings

  1. Open the SmartThings app and tap Add (+) > Add Device. App labels can change between versions.
  2. Tap Scan and scan the Matter QR code on the device or its packaging. If the camera cannot read it, choose Enter under the setup-code option and type the code printed with the QR code. SmartThings says the code is 11 or 21 digits.
  3. Select the hub and room when prompted.
  4. Wait for the connection to complete. If asked to choose a network, select Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate for the device.
  5. If you are pairing a Thread device with a SmartThings 2015 Hub, select the existing Thread border router and enter its Thread network key. The hub and border router should be on the same Wi-Fi/LAN. Find the key on the border router or in its manufacturer’s app; do not guess it.
  6. When the device connects, rename it if you like and save.

Keep the setup code private: it is used to onboard the device, so there is no reason to share a photo of it publicly.

If SmartThings cannot find or onboard the device

1. Confirm the controller and Thread support

Check that the controller is online and selectable in SmartThings. For a Thread device, verify that the controller has Thread border-router capability, either built in or through a compatible border router already on your network. A Wi-Fi/LAN Matter controller without Thread routing is not sufficient for Thread onboarding.

2. Check the code and pairing window

Make sure the QR code is visible and try entering its setup code if scanning fails. Put the device into pairing mode using the manufacturer’s instructions. If it has timed out or was previously paired, follow the maker’s reset procedure, then fully close and restart the SmartThings app before trying again. SmartThings’ troubleshooting guidance is at Troubleshooting Matter in SmartThings.

3. Check range and network compatibility

  • Keep the phone and device within range of the controller during onboarding.
  • If the controller is not offered, check its online status.
  • If SmartThings reports a weak signal, move the device or relevant Wi-Fi/Thread router closer.
  • If it reports network incompatibility, check that the device supports the selected network’s frequency and security type. SmartThings’ article calls out the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • Restart the Matter device and controller, then retry.

If the device paired but later goes offline

Work through these checks in order, following SmartThings’ troubleshooting guidance:

When to contact support—and what not to reset

Use the device manufacturer’s instructions for its reset procedure. If the device still cannot be reliably controlled after these checks, contact Samsung through Contact Us in the SmartThings app menu.

Do not remove or factory-reset the hub as an early troubleshooting step. SmartThings warns that removing a hub restores factory settings and permanently deletes associated device connections, routines, configurations, and services. Devices may also need to be reset or excluded separately before reconnecting. See SmartThings’ guidance on removing a hub.
