This guide uses “playlist stream” to mean either a sequence of source videos or, separately, the HLS media playlist YouTube receives; those are different parts of the workflow.
What the logo overlay does—and where it fits
The overlay filter places one video stream over another. In this case, the main stream is your video and the second stream is a transparent logo, usually a PNG. The filter belongs after you select or sequence the source video and before the resulting video is encoded for YouTube.

There are three separate jobs: selecting or sequencing your source videos, compositing the logo onto their frames, and sending the encoded output to YouTube using a supported ingestion protocol. An HLS output playlist is not the same thing as a playlist of source videos: it is a list of output segments used by the HLS delivery workflow.
Add a logo to one video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s filter documentation gives this lower-left placement example:

ffmpeg -i input -i logo -filter_complex 'overlay=10:main_h-overlay_h-10' outputReplace input with your video file and logo with the transparent logo image. The first expression places the logo 10 pixels from the left edge; the second places it 10 pixels above the bottom. The documented example uses a transparent PNG. See the FFmpeg Filters Documentation.
Choose a position relative to the frame
For a lower-right logo inset 10 pixels from the edges, use this filter expression:
overlay=main_w-overlay_w-10:main_h-overlay_h-10main_w and main_h refer to the main video’s dimensions; overlay_w and overlay_h refer to the logo stream’s dimensions. Using these expressions positions the logo relative to the frame, rather than assuming a fixed output resolution. The margins and corner are design choices: check that the logo is visible without obscuring important content.

[0:v][1:v]overlay[out]Map the labeled output, for example with -map '[out]', when your command has a complex graph or multiple outputs. The overlay example above is a filter fragment, not a complete live-stream command: the output format, audio handling, encoder settings, sequencing method, and YouTube protocol still need to be chosen for your workflow.
Sequence source videos before applying the logo
If “playlist” means several source videos played in order, that is an input-sequencing problem. Arrange or concatenate the sources using a method appropriate to their formats and desired transitions, then apply the logo to the resulting video stream. The overlay belongs on the frames that will be encoded, whether they come from one file or a sequence.
Do not confuse that source list with the media playlist generated for HLS output. In an HLS workflow, YouTube’s playlist orders the segments produced for delivery; it is not your original list of videos. FFmpeg’s Formats Documentation describes HLS muxer options, but configuring that muxer alone does not establish that an output meets YouTube’s ingestion requirements.
Choose how FFmpeg sends the result to YouTube
The overlay filter and YouTube ingestion are separate stages. Select the protocol in YouTube Live Control Room and configure FFmpeg’s encoder and output to meet that protocol’s requirements. In particular, do not assume that adding -f hls makes an arbitrary output acceptable to YouTube.

HLS: higher latency, specific transport requirements
If you choose HLS, YouTube Help says to select HLS as the stream protocol in Live Control Room and use the HTTPS ingestion URL. Its creator-facing requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, and no byte-range mode. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its Help page lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio support. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup instructions for the current setup and constraints.
Google’s encoder-facing guide describes muxed M2TS audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio with a single audio track, a closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. It also describes sending media playlists and segments to the endpoint using HTTP PUT or POST. The guide characterizes HLS as suitable for high-quality, high-resolution content at relatively higher latency. These details are in Google’s YouTube HLS ingestion guide; use it for encoder-side transport details alongside the creator-facing Help page.
RTMP: a different ingestion choice
YouTube’s HLS guidance contrasts HLS with continuous RTMP and identifies HLS for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. The choice affects protocol and latency, not the placement of the logo: the same overlay stage can precede either output path. Confirm the current YouTube requirements for the protocol you select rather than carrying HLS settings over to RTMP.

Check the result before going live
- Confirm the transparent logo appears in the intended corner, with the desired inset, and does not cover important on-screen information.
- Check the composited video at its actual output dimensions; coordinate expressions tied to the main frame adapt to its dimensions, but logo size and visual balance still need review.
- Verify that the chosen sequence plays in the intended order before the overlay and encoding stage.
- For HLS, verify the protocol selection, HTTPS endpoint, segment and playlist behavior, transport method, and supported media against YouTube’s current requirements.
- Review the stream’s audio and video output as a whole; a correct video filter does not by itself guarantee a valid YouTube ingest.
Troubleshooting common problems
The logo does not appear
Check that the logo is supplied as the second input and that the filter references the main and overlay streams in the intended order. In a complex graph, label the overlay result and map that output rather than an unfiltered input. Confirm the logo path is correct and the image has transparency where expected.

The logo is in the wrong corner or too close to an edge
Use the position expressions relative to main_w, main_h, overlay_w, and overlay_h. For lower right, use overlay=main_w-overlay_w-10:main_h-overlay_h-10; adjust the inset if 10 pixels is not suitable for your layout.
The stream fails at YouTube even though the filter works
Separate filter debugging from ingest debugging. Check whether YouTube Live Control Room is set to the same protocol your output uses, then compare the transport, container, codecs, segment behavior, and audio configuration with the applicable YouTube requirements. An overlay command producing video does not prove that the live output is valid for YouTube.
HLS arrives with unexpected latency or rejected segments
HLS is segmented delivery and YouTube says it has higher latency than continuous RTMP. For HLS, inspect the segment duration, rolling playlist, outstanding-segment count, HTTPS transport, and byte-range behavior against YouTube’s Help guidance. Also consult Google’s encoder-facing HLS specifications; FFmpeg muxer options alone cannot validate the complete ingest.
