Add an HTML <a> element inside the page-level <footer>. Put the destination in href and use visible text that describes where the link leads.
Basic HTML example
Use this structure when the link belongs to the entire webpage:
<footer>
<a href="https://example.com">Example resource</a>
</footer>
Replace the example URL and label with your real destination. For a site-relative page, use a path such as href="/about"; for an external destination, use its complete HTTPS URL.
Choose the correct footer
Whole-page link
Place site-wide links—such as a privacy policy, accessibility statement, contact page or copyright information—in the footer associated with the document body. This makes the footer apply to the page as a whole.

Article- or section-specific link
If a link relates only to one article or section, put it in that content’s footer or alongside the relevant content instead of the site-wide footer. The HTML <footer> element is scoped to its nearest sectioning ancestor.
Write useful link text
The text between <a> and </a> should make the destination clear when read on its own. Good examples include:

Privacy policyRead the project documentationDownload the accessibility statement
Avoid vague labels such as “click here” or “here.” Do not rely on the title attribute to explain a link: browser and assistive-technology support for that attribute is inconsistent, and readers should not need to activate or hover over a link to understand it.
Complete page example
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>Example page</title>
</head>
<body>
<main>
<h1>Example page</h1>
<p>Page content goes here.</p>
</main>
<footer>
<a href="/privacy">Privacy policy</a>
<a href="/contact">Contact us</a>
</footer>
</body>
</html>
Common mistakes to avoid
- Missing
href: without it, the element is not a normal destination link. - Using
href="#"orjavascript:void(0)for navigation: these do not identify a real destination and can interfere with copying, opening in a new tab, bookmarking and use without JavaScript. - Putting every link in one footer: keep section-specific links with their relevant content.
- Unclear wording: name the destination or action in the visible link text.
Adding the link in a website builder or CMS
Open the editor’s footer area, add a link using its link control, enter the destination in the URL field and set the displayed text to a descriptive label. Because each platform uses different menus and field names, the exact clicks depend on the builder or CMS. Publish or preview the page, then activate the link to verify that it reaches the intended URL.
