The quickest way to add a horizontal line in WordPress is to insert the built-in Separator block. In the block editor, place a new block where the divider should appear, search for “Separator,” and select it. You can also type /separator in a new Paragraph block and press Enter.
Add a horizontal line with the Separator block
- Open the post or page in the WordPress block editor.
- Place the cursor where you want the visual break and add a new block.
- Open the Block Inserter (the plus button), search for Separator, and select it. Alternatively, type
/separatorin a new Paragraph block and press Enter. - Click the inserted Separator block to display its settings.
- Choose an available style, such as Default, Wide Line, or Dots. You can also set a color, adjust alignment, and change the top or bottom margin when those controls are available.
- Save or update the post. Preview the page if the exact appearance matters.
The built-in block is WordPress’s direct method for adding a visible divider between content blocks. Its underlying block name is core/separator, and WordPress documents it as an HTML <hr> element.
Why the line may look different in your theme
Separator styles and controls can vary with the active theme and the editor context. Full-width alignment works only when the theme supports it, so a separator may not stretch across the entire content area even after you choose a wide or full-width option. Check the front-end preview rather than relying only on the editor canvas.
Separator or Spacer: which block should you use?

If you inserted a Spacer by mistake, open its block options and transform it into a Separator. WordPress documents this transformation, so you do not need to delete the block and start again.

Using the classic editing interface
The block editor has been WordPress’s default editor since WordPress 5.0. If you are working in the block editor but need classic editing controls for a particular area, add a Classic block. The exact toolbar steps in separately installed classic-editor configurations can differ, so do not assume every classic setup has identical buttons or menus.
Set a consistent separator style across a site
Adding one Separator does not require a global design change. On a block theme with WordPress 5.9 or later, the Site Editor’s Styles interface can customize block appearance across the site. Use that option when separators need consistent colors, spacing, or typography site-wide rather than when you only need a single divider.

Developer option: define styles in theme.json
Theme developers can define block styles and support in theme.json for block themes or themes that provide the file. WordPress developer guidance recommends keeping block styling there to reduce conflicts between global settings and individual block styles. This is an implementation choice for theme development, not a requirement for ordinary post editing.
Common problems and fixes
The Separator option does not appear
- Confirm that you are adding a block in the block editor, then search the Block Inserter for Separator.
- Try the slash shortcut: create a Paragraph block, type
/separator, and press Enter.
The line is not visible
- Make sure you inserted a Separator, not a Spacer.
- Check the separator color against the page background and inspect the front-end preview.
- Review the selected style and any theme-specific spacing or border settings.
The line will not become full width
Full-width alignment depends on theme support. If the control is missing or the line remains constrained, the active theme may not allow full-width separators.

I only wanted more space
Replace the Separator with a Spacer. A Spacer creates vertical room without drawing a visible rule.
