You can add Gmail to an iPhone or iPad in either Apple’s built-in Mail app or Google’s Gmail app. In Apple Mail, start at Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account. In Gmail, open the profile menu and select Add another account > Google.
Choose where you want to use Gmail
Adding your account to Apple Mail lets you read it in Apple’s Mail app. Adding it through the Gmail app keeps the setup and account management in Google’s app. These are separate setup flows; choose the one that matches the app you plan to use.

Add Gmail to Apple Mail
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account.
- Choose Google if the provider list appears.
- Enter your Gmail address and follow the sign-in prompts.
- If you see Next, tap it and wait for verification. If you see Save, tap it to finish. Apple’s documented flow allows common providers, including Google, to set up automatically using the email address and password. Apple Support: Add an email account to your iPhone or iPad
Add another account in the Gmail app
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap your profile control in the top-right corner.
- Tap Add another account, then choose Google.
- Follow the on-screen steps to sign in. If two-step verification is enabled, Google may ask you to complete an extra step, such as approving a prompt on your device. Google Help
If setup does not complete

Complete the verification request shown during sign-in. If Google asks you to approve a prompt on a device, respond to that prompt to continue. Google Help

Automatic setup is unavailable
For a less common provider or an account with a nonstandard configuration, you may need manual server settings. Get the current incoming and outgoing server details and security requirements from the email provider rather than guessing. Apple advises having the account’s email settings available for manual setup. Apple Support

You are adding a non-Gmail address in Gmail
Google’s Gmail app instructions support adding other email providers automatically or manually through IMAP. Google’s help page describes a limit of up to five email addresses in the Gmail app on iPhone and iPad; this is an app capability, not a requirement to combine accounts.
