The most reliable method is to open the WordPress Block Editor, insert an Image block, choose Upload or Media Library, select the animated GIF, add meaningful alt text, and publish or update the post. You can also use Insert from URL, but an externally hosted file can disappear when its owner moves, deletes, or stops sharing it.

What you need before adding the GIF
Have the original animated GIF available on your computer, or know which attachment in your Media Library you want to reuse. Check the file in an image viewer first so you know it contains multiple frames; a file that was exported as a single-frame GIF will look static everywhere.

- Publishing permission: Use an animation you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to publish. A GIF being publicly viewable does not automatically grant reuse rights.
- A usable file: Keep the original GIF rather than a screenshot or a preview image generated by another service. The original is the version WordPress can process and animate.
- A clear purpose: Decide what the motion communicates. This makes it easier to write useful alt text and decide whether a caption or surrounding explanation is needed.
- Editor access: You need permission to edit the target post or page and to upload media if the file is not already in the library.
WordPress documents the Image block as the standard way to place an image in a page or post. The complete control list and insertion behavior are described in the official Image block documentation.
Add a GIF in the Block Editor
These steps use the built-in Block Editor and work for a new post, an existing post, or a page.

- Open the content: In your WordPress dashboard, open the post or page in the Block Editor. Place the cursor where the animation should appear.
- Insert an Image block: Select the + Block Inserter, search for Image, and select it. A faster keyboard route is to type
/imagein an empty paragraph and press Enter. - Choose the source: Select Upload to choose a GIF from your device, or select Media Library to reuse an attachment already uploaded to this site. If the file is hosted elsewhere and you intentionally want to reference it, choose Insert from URL, paste the image URL, and press Enter.
- Confirm the correct file: In the Media Library picker, check the preview and filename before inserting. Make sure you selected the animated original rather than a static thumbnail or a still export.
- Write alternative text: In the Image block settings, enter a short description of the GIF’s meaning or function. Describe the important action or message, not every individual frame. Leave decorative animation empty only when it adds no information and is genuinely presentational.
- Add context when needed: Add a caption if readers need to know what the animation demonstrates, where it came from, or how to interpret it. Captions are visible to everyone, while alt text is primarily an alternative for people who cannot see the animation.
- Adjust presentation: Use the block toolbar and settings to align the GIF or change its displayed dimensions. Avoid shrinking text or interface details until they become unreadable. The displayed size does not change the underlying file unless you replace or optimize the asset.
- Save the change: Select Publish for a new post or page, or Update for an existing one. Preview the published URL in a browser rather than relying only on the editor canvas.

Choose between Upload, Media Library, and a URL
The three Image block choices solve different problems. Use this comparison before selecting a source:

The URL method is convenient, but it is not a backup. WordPress warns that an external image may stop displaying if the original file is moved, deleted, or no longer shared. Upload a copy to the Media Library when the post must remain dependable, and keep the original URL only when the hosting arrangement is stable and authorized.
Why a GIF can look like a still image
A static result usually comes from using the wrong asset or the wrong delivery path, not from the Image block failing to support animation. Check these causes in order:

A thumbnail or preview was inserted
Some galleries, download pages, and optimization tools show a still thumbnail even though the full asset is animated. Return to the Media Library or upload dialog and select the original, full GIF. If you copied an image address, verify that the address ends at the actual GIF rather than a page, preview endpoint, or generated thumbnail.
The source file has only one frame
Open the downloaded file locally and confirm that it animates. Re-export or obtain the authorized multi-frame original if it does not. Changing alignment, width, or alt text cannot create motion in a one-frame file.

The standalone Image block is the documented location for WordPress’s optional GIF-to-video conversion control. Galleries, Media & Text, and Cover media do not expose the same control. If a different block or plugin produced a still, insert the file in a standalone Image block and test that block before changing other settings.
The browser is showing a cached copy
After replacing a GIF, open the published page in a private window or clear the browser cache. Confirm the image URL in the browser’s context menu points to the new attachment. A cached old thumbnail can make a corrected upload appear unchanged.

Use Display as video when an opaque GIF is heavy
Animated GIFs can be much larger to download than an equivalent short video. In current WordPress client-side media processing, an opaque animated GIF can receive a Display as video control in the Image block toolbar. Selecting it changes the standalone Image block to a GIF variation of the Video block backed by a companion MP4 or WebM file. WordPress describes this as a way to reduce download size dramatically while preserving the look and feel of an animated GIF. The conversion is optional and reversible.
How to switch an eligible GIF
- Insert the animated file in a standalone Image block and wait for the media processing controls to appear.
- Select the GIF block and look in its block toolbar for Display as video.
- Select that control. WordPress creates or uses the companion video representation and changes the block to the GIF variation of the Video block.
- Preview the published page on the browsers and devices your readers use. If the result is unsuitable, use the block’s conversion control to return to the original GIF representation.
The conversion guide is documented in Client-Side Media Processing. It applies to the standalone Image block, not every block that happens to contain media.

Video playback settings that affect the converted version
Because the converted representation uses the Video block variation, its playback behavior follows Video block controls. The available settings include:
- Autoplay: starts playback without a manual play action when the browser permits it.
- Loop: repeats the animation after it reaches the end.
- Muted: suppresses audio; GIFs normally have no audio, but the setting is part of the video control set.
- Play inline: keeps playback in the page instead of handing it off to a separate full-screen or native player mode on supported devices.
Review the exact behavior and controls in the WordPress Video block documentation. Test autoplay assumptions on a phone as well as a desktop browser, because browsers can apply their own playback policies.

Transparency and browser compatibility
Not every animated GIF can use the video variation.
Transparent GIFs stay GIFs
Video cannot reproduce GIF transparency in the same way, so transparent animated GIFs are not converted by this workflow. Keep the original GIF when transparent pixels are part of the design, such as an animation that must sit cleanly over a page background.

WordPress’s client-side encoder relies on WebCodecs where available. Browsers without WebCodecs, including Firefox according to the developer guide, fall back to uploading or serving the original GIF. A conversion control may therefore be absent or produce the original format for that visitor or editing environment.
This fallback is expected behavior rather than evidence that the file is broken. If broad compatibility and transparency matter more than transfer size, keep the original GIF. If the animation is opaque and bandwidth is a concern, test the video variation and retain it only when it looks and behaves correctly.

The built-in Image block gives you direct control over a file in your Media Library or a specific image URL. The optional Jetpack route is documented in Add GIFs with the Jetpack GIF Block; it is useful when you specifically want that block’s Giphy-oriented search and insertion experience.
Write useful alt text and captions
Animation can communicate an action, reaction, demonstration, or warning. Alt text should communicate that same essential meaning in a compact form. For example, an animation showing a menu opening could use “Settings menu opens and the Notifications option is selected.” An abstract decorative sparkle effect may need no alt text if nearby text already conveys the message.
- Describe purpose, not a frame-by-frame transcript: State the action, result, or information a reader needs.
- Do not start with “GIF of”: Screen readers already identify the element as an image. Mention that it is animated only when that fact changes how the content should be understood.
- Keep text in the page when possible: If the animation demonstrates a procedure, explain the steps in surrounding prose so readers who cannot perceive motion still receive the instructions.
- Use a caption for shared context: Credit, source context, a warning about flashing, or an explanation of what to watch belongs in a visible caption when readers need it.
- Check motion sensitivity: Rapid flashes, looping movement, or distracting motion can interfere with concentration or comprehension. Consider a still image or a short, user-controlled video when motion is not essential.
Manage download weight and long-term reliability
Prefer a controlled copy for important pages
A Media Library copy remains under the site’s publishing control. An external URL can fail independently of your post, so it is a poor choice for an evergreen tutorial, product explanation, or legal notice unless you have a dependable reason to keep the asset on that host.
Use video conversion selectively
The MP4 or WebM companion can reduce transfer size for opaque animations, but it is not a universal replacement. Transparent GIFs and environments without WebCodecs retain the original GIF, and a conversion can change how a browser handles playback controls. Compare the visual result and the page’s behavior before leaving the converted form in production.
Do not confuse display dimensions with optimization
Dragging a corner or entering a smaller width changes how large the GIF appears; it does not necessarily reduce the bytes delivered. A smaller source file, an appropriate export, or the supported GIF-to-video variation is what addresses download weight.

Edit, replace, or remove a GIF later
Replace the animation
- Select the Image block in the editor.
- Use its media replacement control to choose another upload or an existing Media Library item.
- Check the replacement’s alt text and caption; WordPress may not carry over wording that described the old animation.
- Publish or update, then open the live page and verify that the new file animates.
Change a URL-based image to a local attachment
- Select the URL-based Image block and replace its media.
- Choose Upload to create a local Media Library copy, or select an existing attachment.
- Recheck the alt text, caption, dimensions, and link settings before updating the page.
Remove the GIF without leaving an empty block
Select the Image block, open its block options, and remove the block. If explanatory text is still needed, replace it with a paragraph or a still image rather than leaving an empty media area.

Final pre-publish check
- The selected asset is the authorized, multi-frame original.
- The image is inserted in the intended location and is not merely a thumbnail.
- Alt text states the animation’s meaning or function; a caption supplies any necessary shared context.
- The choice of local upload, existing attachment, or external URL matches the required reliability.
- If the GIF is opaque and large, you tested the optional GIF video variation without sacrificing the needed appearance or controls.
- Transparent GIFs remain in GIF form, and you understand that browsers without WebCodecs may use the original format.
- The published page has been checked in at least one desktop and one mobile browser.
