To put chat or recent-event notifications over your gameplay in Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Game Overlay, enable the in-game overlay, choose Show Chat and/or Show Recent Events, and arrange the panels with Toggle Positioning Mode. Assign hotkeys for the overlay and positioning mode, then run the game in borderless-windowed or windowed-fullscreen mode. Streamlabs says its Game Overlay does not work in fullscreen mode.
What the Game Overlay does
Streamlabs Desktop’s built-in Game Overlay places chat and recent-event notifications over the game on your own display. It can be useful if you play and stream from one monitor and want to check activity without switching windows.

This is different from a decorative scene overlay: a scene overlay is part of the broadcast layout, while the Game Overlay is an in-game monitoring feature. Whether viewers see it depends on the capture source you use; see the capture-source distinction below.
Set up the in-game overlay
- Open the setting. In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings and select Game Overlay.
- Enable the feature and choose panels. Turn on the in-game overlay, then select Show Chat, Show Recent Events, or both.
- Arrange the panels. Use Toggle Positioning Mode to move the components to a convenient part of the game window. Adjust opacity so text remains legible without covering important game information.
- Assign hotkeys. Open Settings > Hotkeys and set keys for Toggle in-game overlay and Toggle overlay positioning mode. Streamlabs’ setup instructions say hotkeys are needed to turn on and operate the feature.
- Change the game display mode. Run the game in borderless-windowed or windowed-fullscreen mode, not fullscreen. Streamlabs says fullscreen mode will not work with Game Overlay; its 2022 article says borderless window mode works best.
- Test during a private or low-stakes session. Confirm the overlay appears on your display, that your hotkeys work, and that the panels are positioned and transparent enough for the game you are playing.
Streamlabs documents these menu paths, but the reviewed instructions do not provide a version-by-version interface guide. If your labels differ, check the current in-app settings or Streamlabs support rather than assuming an older layout is identical.

Will viewers see the overlay?
According to Streamlabs, the Game Overlay is not visible to viewers when gameplay is captured with a Game Capture source. With Display Capture, viewers will see it because the whole display is being captured.
| Capture source | What Streamlabs says viewers see | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Game Capture | The Game Overlay is not visible in the broadcast. | You want chat or event notifications for yourself only. |
| Display Capture | The Game Overlay is visible in the broadcast. | You intend to show the captured display, including the overlay. |
The reviewed Streamlabs instructions establish these two outcomes; they do not establish compatibility behavior for other capture-source configurations. Check your stream preview before going live if viewer visibility matters.

Single-monitor use and limitations
The feature is intended to make chat and recent events easier to monitor while you play, especially when you do not have a second screen. Streamlabs also mentions checking chat on a phone or tablet as an alternative, but notes that checking tips, follows, and subscriptions that way can disrupt the flow. The documented Game Overlay setup itself does not require buying additional hardware.

Streamlabs called the feature experimental in its 2022 article. Its gaming page still lists Game Overlay, but the reviewed pages do not provide a current compatibility matrix or explicitly update that experimental label. Do not assume it works with every game, system, or capture configuration.

Troubleshooting
- The overlay does not appear in the game: Confirm the in-game overlay is enabled under Settings > Game Overlay, and check that you have assigned and pressed the toggle hotkey in Settings > Hotkeys.
- Positioning mode will not open: Check the hotkey assigned to Toggle overlay positioning mode. Streamlabs’ instructions require hotkeys to enter and leave positioning mode.
- The overlay fails in fullscreen: Switch the game to borderless-windowed or windowed-fullscreen mode. Streamlabs says fullscreen is unsupported for this feature.
- Viewers can see your chat panel: If you are using Display Capture, Streamlabs says the Game Overlay will appear to viewers. Use Game Capture if you want the overlay to remain private, then verify the broadcast preview.
- Settings or labels do not match these steps: App layouts can change, and the available instructions do not document every version. Check the current in-app settings or contact Streamlabs support.
Or let it run in the cloud
Streamlabs Game Overlay is for monitoring chat and recent events while you play; it is not a way to keep gameplay from a camera or a live game session running when your computer is off. If your separate goal is to keep an uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs that uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
