To make AI-assisted changes follow a repository’s coding rules, use several layers: install the project’s formatter and linter locally, enable editor feedback, give the assistant the project’s actual commands and conventions, check changed files before commits, and run the same checks in CI. Instructions help guide the assistant; automated checks provide the enforcement.
Formatter or linter: which do you need?
A formatter standardizes presentation, such as whitespace and line wrapping. A linter checks code against rules that can flag quality problems or patterns associated with defects. They address different concerns: Prettier puts it plainly—“In other words, use Prettier for formatting and linters for catching bugs!” Prettier’s comparison guide explains the distinction.

Choose tools that support your language and fit the repository’s existing conventions. If a linter duplicates the formatter’s style rules, follow the tools’ official integration guidance to disable or remove overlapping rules. That keeps formatting decisions in one place and reduces conflicting feedback.

Before installing anything, inspect the project’s language, package manager, existing formatter and linter configuration, and available scripts. Extend a sound setup rather than introducing competing tools. The title does not specify a language or package manager, so there is no single correct install command; use the project’s own package manager and the official instructions for the selected tools.

- Identify the existing configuration files and scripts, including commands contributors already use to check or fix code.
- Choose tools compatible with the project’s language, framework, and conventions.
- Add them as project-local development dependencies where the ecosystem supports that approach, and commit the configuration and lockfile when applicable.
Local installation helps contributors and automation use the project’s intended formatter version. Prettier recommends installing it locally rather than relying on a global installation; see its editor integration documentation.
Give developers fast feedback in the editor
Set up the editor integration for the chosen formatter and linter. If the team wants formatting on save, configure that behavior deliberately and make sure it uses the repository’s local tool and configuration. Prettier documents integrations for common editors and recommends running it through the editor for quick feedback: Prettier editor integrations.

Editor feedback is the earliest layer, but it depends on each contributor’s editor and setup. It should make fixes convenient, not be the only place a rule is checked.

Add concise, repository-specific instructions that name the formatter and linter, explain which files or directories they apply to, and give the real commands to check or fix code. Ask the assistant to rerun the relevant checks after editing. For example:

- Use this repository’s configured formatter for files under the applicable source directory.
- Run the project’s documented lint and formatting-check commands after changing code.
- Do not add a second formatter or override existing configuration without a project-specific reason.
- Review diagnostics and explain any unresolved ones instead of silently ignoring them.
For GitHub Copilot, repository-wide instructions can be placed in .github/copilot-instructions.md. GitHub recommends concise, self-contained guidance with relevant project information, standards, tools, and versions. Its documentation also cautions that Copilot may not follow custom instructions consistently because AI behavior is non-deterministic. Instructions guide behavior; hooks and CI are needed for dependable checks. See GitHub’s documentation on customizing Copilot responses. Other assistants have their own instruction mechanisms, so use the relevant product’s documentation rather than assuming this file applies universally.
Check changed files before they are committed
A pre-commit hook can run checks near the point where changes enter version control. For Prettier projects, its documentation describes using lint-staged to run formatting alongside other quality tools on staged files, including cases involving partially staged files. Configure hooks to respect the staged-change workflow. Blindly formatting the entire repository at every commit can create noise or affect unstaged edits; staged-file tooling can help limit the scope. Hooks also require contributors to install or enable them, so they are a useful local safeguard rather than a substitute for shared CI.
Run the same checks in CI
Run the project’s formatting and lint checks in continuous integration on pull requests and pushes, using the same configuration and pinned project tool versions as local development. CI provides a shared check even when someone’s editor integration or local hook is missing. Prettier documents a GitHub Actions example and calls for using a pinned project version: Run Prettier on CI.

Choose whether CI only reports failures or applies formatting automatically. A check-only job makes contributors review and commit their own changes; an autofix workflow can be appropriate if its edits are visible and reviewable. Make the selected behavior clear so contributors know whether a failed check requires a local fix or produces an automated change.
Review AI fixes instead of assuming they worked
If the assistant proposes a lint correction, inspect the diff and rerun the linter. GitHub’s guidance on asking Copilot to “Fix the lint errors” notes that a suggested fix may not resolve every reported issue. Treat it as a proposal, check the result against the project’s intent, and address remaining diagnostics: GitHub’s lint-fixing guidance.
Choose the right layer for each job

This layered approach combines the fast feedback of editor integration with local and shared checks. Keep the exact commands tied to the repository’s language, package manager, and existing scripts; the cited Prettier examples illustrate one tool’s integrations, not a universal stack.
