You can add a disc drive to a Raspberry Pi or mini PC using an external USB optical drive; for a reused desktop SATA DVD drive, use a SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure with its own power supply. The right setup depends on the host’s ports, the drive’s power needs, and whether you want to read data discs, swap game discs in an emulator, or play movies. Attaching the drive is only the hardware step: operating-system mounting and emulator or media-player support still matter.

Connect a desktop SATA DVD drive to a Raspberry Pi 4
A desktop SATA DVD drive needs both a data connection and power. A powered SATA-to-USB adapter or externally powered enclosure provides the USB connection to the Pi while supplying the drive’s power separately.

- With the adapter or enclosure unplugged from mains and the Pi, connect its SATA data and power connectors to the matching connectors on the back of the DVD drive.
- Connect the adapter’s USB lead to the Raspberry Pi.
- Connect the adapter’s power supply to mains, following the adapter or enclosure instructions.
- Start the Pi, insert a disc, and check whether Raspberry Pi OS detects and mounts it.
Some bus-powered USB optical drives can demand more current than a Raspberry Pi 4 USB port can comfortably provide. Check the drive’s power requirements; use an appropriate external power arrangement if needed. For older emulators, disc behavior can matter as well as power: some expect a disc to keep spinning. The Raspberry Pi Magazine project cautions against Blu-ray drives for that particular emulation use because spin-up and spin-down behavior can conflict with those expectations. That is not a general warning against Blu-ray drives for other uses. Read the project’s setup and caveats.

Connect a USB optical drive to a Raspberry Pi 5
Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 tutorial connects an ASUS SBC-06D2X-U CD/DVD/Blu-ray writer using both of its USB-A connectors, plugged into the Pi 5’s USB 3 ports. In that tutorial, the authors recommend those ports rather than a powered USB hub, which caused unexpected read-speed issues in their setup. This is an example configuration, not a guarantee that every optical drive will work the same way. Check your drive’s connector and power requirements. Raspberry Pi’s documentation provides general context on USB peripherals and model-specific power and port details. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Reuse a slimline SATA drive
A slimline SATA drive can be fitted into a USB enclosure designed for that drive form factor. StarTech’s SLMSOPTB guide describes sliding a slimline SATA CD/DVD drive into the enclosure tray, securing it, and connecting the USB cable. The guide notes that the enclosure’s secondary USB connector may also be needed if the drive requires more power than one USB port supplies. Check the enclosure’s compatibility and assembly instructions before connecting it. StarTech SLMSOPTB installation guide.
Install a drive internally only after checking the exact model
Do not assume that a mini PC has space or cabling for an optical drive just because it has SATA storage. Confirm that the system has a compatible optical bay, the correct bay dimensions, SATA data and power connections, and any required bracket. If the manufacturer’s documentation does not establish those details, an external USB drive avoids the uncertainty.

Make disc swapping work in an emulator
Hardware detection and emulator configuration are separate. In the Raspberry Pi 5 tutorial, Raspberry Pi OS automount gives each disc a generated, non-permanent path. An emulator that expects every disc to appear at the same location may not handle a swap as intended.
The tutorial describes pmount for mounting a disc at a chosen location such as /media/cdrom, then pumount for unmounting it before inserting another disc. It also provides instructions for allowing /dev/sr0, adjusting automount settings, and swapping discs in DOSBox-X. Those steps apply to the Raspberry Pi OS setup described in that tutorial; package availability and settings can vary. Follow the tutorial’s instructions for the relevant configuration rather than assuming the same commands or settings apply to every Linux distribution or emulator. - Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.
Do not assume a connected drive will play every movie disc
A connected optical drive does not by itself establish that a protected DVD or Blu-ray will play. Playback also depends on the operating system, player software, disc format and region, and available support for the disc’s protection and media formats. Kodi is one optional media-center route, not a requirement for using a drive with games or data discs. Its download page says users supply their own media, including discs they own, and its wiki documents DVD and Blu-ray disc settings; neither source guarantees playback for every disc and system combination.
