The console’s model number—not simply the fact that it is a “Digital Edition”—determines whether the detachable drive fits. Find the model number printed on the console and compare it with Sony’s current regional listing before purchasing; availability and listed compatibility may change. Make this your first decision, before comparing prices or planning the installation. Sony has not described this as a universal add-on for all PS5 Digital Edition consoles. An older Digital Edition may look like the same broad product category, but its model group matters. The CFI-1000 Digital Edition, in particular, does not support disc-based games or media. Sony’s setup instructions use the broader CFI-2000/7000 grouping, while its product listing names the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim Digital Editions and PS5 Pro. The CFI-2100 accessory statement helps explain how Sony groups accessories; it is not a reason to assume that every Digital Edition accepts the drive. If the shorthand on one Sony page does not look identical to the model number you see on your console, compare the complete model designation with Sony’s product and support information rather than guessing from the console’s appearance. Sony’s CFI-2100 product information specifically says those consoles use accessories for CFI-2000 products, including disc drives. That is useful when confirming the accessory family, but the safest purchase check remains the exact console model and the currently applicable Sony listing for your region.
The drive is a Sony accessory sold separately, not a built-in part that can be activated through a setting or a software download. Its model series is CFI-ZDD1. The comparison that matters here is therefore not between different drive models, but between your console’s model number and Sony’s compatibility information. The official information cited here does not establish a compatible third-party alternative. If you are shopping for an add-on, verify that the product is Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive for the compatible console group instead of assuming that another optical drive can attach and pair in the same way.
What the add-on lets you play
On a compatible console, the drive adds access to supported PS5 game discs, supported PS4 game titles, and supported movie discs. Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD playback. Compatibility depends on the title and disc format, so owning the drive does not mean every optical disc will work.

A disc being in a supported format does not guarantee that every game or video will play; Sony notes that compatibility varies by title and format. Check the disc type and title support if you are buying a disc specifically for use with the console.
These distinctions are useful if your reason for adding a drive is a particular item in your collection. A supported PS4 game disc or movie Blu-ray may be a good reason to add the hardware, but do not assume that every PS4 title, every recordable disc, or every video disc will work simply because it fits in the drive. Sony lists format categories, not a guarantee for every title in every category. For a game, check the title’s compatibility; for a movie or recordable disc, check the disc’s actual format against the supported and unsupported lists.
In short, the drive adds a way to use supported physical media; it does not convert the console into a universal disc player. Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R/RE, DVD-ROM and DVD±R/RW appear on Sony’s supported-format list. CDs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL and unfinalized DVDs appear on its unsupported list. Install the PS5 Disc Drive
Follow Sony’s setup sequence. The console must be turned off, unplugged and cool before you remove the cover. Use a soft cloth on a flat surface to protect the console while working.
- Turn off the console. Use the power options in the PS5 control center to turn it off; do not start the installation while it is in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the cables and let the console cool. Unplug the AC power cord and the other connected cables, then wait for the console to cool before handling it.
- Position the console. Place it bottom-up on a soft cloth over a flat surface, with the front facing you. Remove the short horizontal feet.
- Remove the circular cover. Release the cover’s clips and lift the cover off.
- Attach the drive. Align the drive’s clips with the two marked holes on the console, then press firmly until the clips click into place.
- Replace the cover and feet. Fit the circular cover and the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive. Keep the original cover and short feet; you will need them if you remove the drive later.
- Reconnect and pair. Reconnect the power and other cables, then turn the console on. An internet connection is required during setup to pair the drive with the console.
The steps above paraphrase Sony’s support instructions; they are not a claim of hands-on testing. If the clips do not align or click into place, stop and recheck their position against the marked holes rather than forcing the accessory.
It helps to think of the process in three stages: make the console safe to handle, fit the drive and restore the console’s cover and feet, then complete the software pairing. Do not skip the shutdown, unplugging or cooling steps to save time. Sony’s sequence calls for the console to be off and disconnected from its AC power cord and other cables before the cover is removed. The soft cloth and flat surface are there to give you a stable work area while you turn the console bottom-up.
Take note of the parts you remove. The installation uses the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive, while the original short feet and circular cover should be kept aside. Sony says those original pieces are needed if you later remove the drive. Store them together so you can find them if you change the console back to its previous configuration; they are not disposable packaging.
When fitting the drive, pay attention to the two marked holes and the corresponding clips. The instruction is to align the clips and press firmly until they click, not to force a part into place if it is sitting at an angle. A failure to line up is a cue to stop and recheck the orientation and marked positions. Once the drive is secured, fit the circular cover and the longer feet from the drive package, then reconnect the cables and power. Pairing comes after the physical attachment.
Pairing, internet access and disc playback
An internet connection is required for the initial pairing of the drive and console during setup. Sony’s cited setup and product information establishes that requirement for pairing; it does not establish a general, ongoing internet requirement for playing discs. Do not treat the pairing step as evidence that every later disc session needs a connection.
After installation, insert a supported game or movie disc and follow the console’s on-screen prompts. If playback does not work, check the disc format and title compatibility first: CDs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL and unfinalized DVDs are among the formats Sony lists as unsupported.

Plan for internet access when you install the accessory for the first time, because that is when Sony requires the console and drive to pair. This is a setup requirement, not a reason to assume that a connection is required every time you watch a supported movie or use a supported game disc. Sony’s cited pages specify the initial pairing requirement; they do not make a broader claim here about an ongoing internet connection for disc playback.
If the console is online but the initial pairing has not completed, return to the setup process rather than diagnosing the problem as a disc-format issue. If pairing is complete but an inserted disc does not work, then check the disc type and the specific title. Keeping those two checks separate helps narrow down the issue: pairing concerns the drive-console setup, while playback also depends on whether the disc format and content are supported.
Should you add the drive?
The practical reason to buy it is access to physical media on a compatible Digital Edition: for example, a supported game disc you already own, a disc you intend to buy, or supported movie discs. If you use only digital games and streaming video, the accessory may not add a capability you need. The decision comes after the compatibility check, since the CFI-1000 Digital Edition is excluded.
Think about the specific use you want before making a separate purchase. If you have supported PS5 or PS4 game discs, want to use supported movie discs, or expect to buy physical media, a compatible console and the add-on provide that option. If your games are digital and you do not use movie discs, the drive may not change how you use the console. There is no universal better choice: it depends on whether disc access matters to you and whether your model accepts the accessory.
Consider Sony’s stated direction for physical PlayStation game releases as well as your current library. In a product listing, Sony says physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. That statement concerns new game disc production; it does not say that existing supported discs stop working on that date.

Sony’s product listing attributes that future change to a statement from Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment: “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” This is relevant if you are deciding based on future physical game releases, but it should not be confused with a stated cutoff for existing discs. Sony says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console.
No price is assumed here: the Disc Drive is sold separately, and its current cost and local availability should be checked with Sony or the retailer you intend to use. Check compatibility first, then compare the current purchase cost with the value you expect from your own supported game and movie discs. The key decision is not whether a disc drive is inherently better than digital-only use; it is whether your compatible console, physical library and intended use justify the add-on.

Common installation problems
- You cannot confirm compatibility: Read the complete model number printed on the console and compare it with Sony’s current regional product listing. Do not rely on “Digital Edition” alone.
- The cover or drive will not seat: Recheck that the console is bottom-up, the cover clips have been released, and the drive clips line up with the two marked holes. Sony’s instructions call for firm pressure until the clips click; do not force a misaligned part.
- The drive has not paired during setup: Confirm that the console is connected to the internet while completing the initial pairing process.
- A disc will not play: Check whether it is one of Sony’s supported formats and whether the particular game or video is compatible. A CD, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL or unfinalized DVD is listed as unsupported.
- You removed the drive and need to restore the original setup: Keep the original circular cover and short horizontal feet during installation; Sony says these are needed if the drive is removed later.
There are two different kinds of “it does not work” to separate. A physical fitting issue means the clips, cover or feet do not align as expected; revisit their position and the orientation of the console rather than applying extra force. A setup issue means the drive has not paired, for which an internet connection is required during the initial process. A playback issue after pairing calls for checking whether the format and title are supported. Following that order can prevent an unsupported disc from being mistaken for an installation fault.
If the model number does not match a group Sony lists, pause before proceeding. Likewise, if you are relying on an older saved product page or a retailer description, confirm the current Sony listing for your region. Model-group shorthand can differ between Sony’s setup guidance and product listing, and regional product availability may change. The CFI-1000 Digital Edition is explicitly excluded from disc-based games and media, so it should not be treated as a case where a different installation technique will solve compatibility.
