To add a visitor-facing light/dark switch to a WPBakery page, use either a custom “Dark Mode Toggle” element or the dedicated WPBakery element offered by the WP Dark Mode plugin. Configure its default and colors, then test both modes across your theme and page content: not every theme or third-party element will recolor automatically.
Choose a custom element or a plugin
WordPress does not provide a standard front-end light/dark switch for every site. The behavior must come from the active theme, a plugin, custom code, or a custom page-builder element. WPBakery’s tutorial presents two options: a custom element for a more tailored workflow, or WP Dark Mode as a ready-made alternative with a WPBakery element. The tutorial was published August 27, 2026; plugin features can change, so check the current WordPress.org listing before installing or relying on a particular control.

There is no performance or price comparison established between these routes. Confirm the plugin’s current compatibility and features in its listing. WPBakery says it works with properly coded themes, but that does not guarantee every theme customization or third-party element will adapt; see its theme compatibility FAQ.
Build and add a custom toggle
WPBakery’s tutorial describes generating a custom element with its WPBakery Element Builder GPT. Treat generated code as something to review and test, not as a production-ready guarantee.

- Describe the element. Ask for a “Dark Mode Toggle” and specify the behavior and controls you need.
- Review and refine the result. Check the generated settings and code, and adjust them before use.
- Test off the live site. Use a local or staging site first. If you are not comfortable reviewing code, get a developer to check it before production.
- Activate the completed element. Once it is ready, make it available in WPBakery.
- Add it to a page. Edit an existing page with WPBakery, open the content-element window, and select “Dark Mode Toggle.”
The toggle changes presentation; it does not replace the page’s content or structure. WPBakery’s dark-mode tutorial describes possible custom-element settings, but the controls depend on the generated version and are not standard features included with every WPBakery installation.
Configure the default, colors, and preference behavior
Depending on the custom build, available settings may include a light, dark, or system default; detection of the visitor’s system preference; separate light and dark color skins; background, text, link, button, and border colors; switch style and size; alignment and spacing; and an extra CSS class. Configure only the controls your element actually provides.

System detection typically reads the browser’s prefers-color-scheme setting. The implementation may also let visitors override that choice and save their selection for later visits or other pages. These behaviors are implementation-dependent: check that a manual choice takes precedence as intended and that a saved preference persists where you expect it to.

Test the complete page, not just the switch. Fixed colors and assets are common reasons a page can look correct in one mode and fail in the other.

- Toggle back and forth, reload the page, and verify whether the selected mode persists as intended.
- If system detection is enabled, change the device’s appearance preference and confirm the page responds correctly.
- Inspect desktop and mobile layouts in both modes.
- Check page backgrounds, rows, columns, headings, body text, links, buttons and hover states, forms and placeholders, menus, cards, borders, icons, logos, and transparent images.
- Check keyboard navigation, visible focus treatment, switch labels, and any brief flash of the wrong mode during navigation.
- For elements that retain fixed colors, adjust their own settings or use targeted custom CSS.
WPBakery’s documentation describes the builder and its compatibility context in its official overview; a theme’s coding quality does not ensure that every custom style or plugin element will respond to a mode switch.

A dark palette is not automatically easier for every visitor to read. WPBakery’s tutorial notes that light text on dark backgrounds can appear blurry to some readers and that dark mode may be harder to read in bright surroundings. Check contrast in both modes, retain visible keyboard focus, and give the control a clear label so visitors can understand and use it.

Look especially for fixed-color logos, transparent images, form fields, and page sections that disappear or lose contrast when the background changes. Dark mode is an alternate presentation, not a complete accessibility solution.

Dark mode versus a dark theme
Dark mode is an alternative viewing mode, typically using darker backgrounds with lighter text and interface colors. A dark theme has a fixed dark appearance rather than a visitor-facing switch between modes. If you want visitors to choose, add a toggle and verify that both appearances work across the site.
