To show a countdown to viewers, add it to the scene your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS Studio, the usual method is to load a timer page as a Browser source, position it on the canvas, then check it in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast. A timer open in a separate computer window will not appear in the stream unless it is part of the outgoing scene.
Add a countdown timer in OBS
You need OBS Studio, a timer page that provides a browser-view URL (or a timer page hosted locally), and access to the YouTube stream’s Live Control Room. OBS Browser Source can load a webpage from a URL or from the local machine. Its documented default viewport is 800 × 600 pixels; this is only a default source size, not a required video resolution. - Choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene that should show the countdown, such as a “Starting Soon” scene. Create a scene if you do not already have one.
- Add the timer page. In the Sources dock, select +, choose Browser, and enter the timer provider’s browser-view URL. If using a local timer page, use its local path as supported by OBS.
- Set the viewport. Enter a width and height that suit the timer page’s layout. The right dimensions depend on that page and how you want it to appear; OBS’s 800 × 600 default is not a streaming standard.
- Place and size it. Position the source on the OBS canvas and resize it. Keep the timer inside the area you intend viewers to see, and avoid covering the host, captions, or important visuals. If the page has an unwanted background or controls, check whether its provider offers a transparent or overlay view rather than assuming a universal CSS fix.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets the encoder send the feed it will accept. Keep it private. YouTube encoder setup · Manage live stream settings
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the timer is visible and correctly placed, and test audio separately. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s documented flow is to wait for the preview, then click Go live. YouTube encoder settings and testing
Choose a timer that fits your setup
The exact URL format, appearance, and controls depend on the timer you choose. Before using one, check whether it can render transparently, whether it starts automatically or needs a manual start, whether it can be reset or controlled remotely, whether it works offline, whether its style and dimensions are adjustable, and whether it has an audio alert you need to manage.

TimerBox documents this workflow at TimerBox. Stagetimer’s tutorial demonstrates a browser timer in an OBS scene with a transparent background: Stagetimer tutorial. These are service examples, not independent tests or endorsements.
- Local timer page or script: OBS supports loading local web content as well as URLs. This may suit a creator who already has a timer page and needs it available without relying on a hosted page, but the timer’s behavior and setup depend on that implementation. OBS Browser Source documentation
OBS’s Browser Source documentation explains how to load a page; it does not prescribe a particular countdown script or timer service. Do not assume that start, reset, transparency, offline support, or remote control works the same way across tools.

Keep YouTube’s break overlay separate from a countdown
YouTube’s Live Control Room offers a break overlay intended to show an away slate while the streamer takes a break. It is not the same feature as a creator-designed “Starting Soon” countdown. YouTube’s documented overlay setup also uses a Browser source in the encoder, and YouTube notes that the visual overlay does not affect audio sources. If you use a visual timer or slate, manage your microphone and other audio separately. YouTube break overlay help
Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect timer
- The timer does not appear in OBS: Confirm the intended scene is active, the Browser source URL is correct, and its width and height are nonzero and large enough for the page. Timer-specific behavior depends on the provider. OBS Browser Source documentation
- The timer has a background or extra content: Check the timer provider’s settings or help for a transparent overlay URL or a customizable display. Transparency is not universal; Stagetimer’s tutorial shows one example, not a feature available in every timer. Stagetimer tutorial
- You see it locally, but viewers do not: Make sure the timer is in the scene being sent by the encoder, then inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube encoder settings and testing
- Your encoder has no Browser source option: Browser-source support and setup vary by encoder. Consult the encoder’s current documentation; YouTube cautions that not all encoders support browser sources in the same way. YouTube break overlay help
- The stream will not connect or the key may be exposed: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder. Treat the key like a password; if it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. Manage live stream settings
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded video that should loop on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option from adding a countdown to an OBS scene: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not go live from a camera.
