How to Add a Countdown Between Podcast Episodes on a YouTube Live Stream

Use a separate OBS scene with a Browser Source countdown, then switch to it between podcast episodes while your YouTube live stream continues.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In OBS, create a separate countdown scene, add a timer as a Browser Source, and switch to that scene between episodes. When the next episode is ready, switch back. The timer is part of the video output sent to YouTube; it does not automatically mute your microphone or change the audio mix.

Build the countdown scene in OBS

  1. Create two scenes. In OBS, keep your podcast layout in one scene and create another for the intermission. OBS scenes let you arrange the visual elements and media sources in your stream layout. See the OBS Studio overview.
  2. Add the timer to the intermission scene. Add a Browser Source and load a countdown page by URL, or point it to a local countdown file. OBS Browser Source supports both URLs and local files; the exact timer setup and behavior depend on the page or file you choose. See OBS Browser Source documentation.
  3. Make the timer readable. Preview the scene at the resolution you intend to stream. Check that the digits are legible, the timer fits the canvas, and it counts for the full break. Confirm whether it starts, resets, or continues when you show the scene; those behaviors are determined by the chosen timer implementation, not guaranteed by OBS.

Choose a timer source: web page or local file

Option What to check
Web URL Confirm that the page loads in OBS and that its countdown duration, styling, and start or reset behavior suit your handoff. A web timer depends on the page being reachable when it is needed.
Local file Confirm that the file opens in Browser Source and behaves as intended in the scene. A local file avoids relying on a remote timer page, but its exact offline behavior depends on how the file is built.

OBS documents that Browser Source can load a URL or local file, but it does not specify or endorse a particular countdown provider. Test your chosen implementation rather than assuming it will automatically restart when the scene appears.

Set the handoff, transition, and audio

Switch scenes between episodes

At the end of an episode, switch from the podcast scene to the countdown scene; switch back when the next episode is ready. OBS provides Cut and Fade transitions: a Cut is immediate, while a Fade makes the change more gradual. Studio Mode lets you prepare and inspect a scene separately from the one currently live. Rehearse the transition that fits your show’s pacing using the OBS scene and transition controls.

Decide what viewers hear

A countdown is visual content, not an audio control. Choose whether the break should have silence, music, or a host voiceover, then check which sources are active in the countdown scene and what the audience will hear. YouTube’s live-stream monetization and breaks guidance notes that a break overlay does not affect stream audio sources and advises muting a microphone when stepping away. Test the actual mix before going live.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the encoder connection details and stream key for the stream you are setting up. Enter the key in OBS’s streaming settings; treat it as private because it authorizes a connection to your broadcast.
  2. Use RTMPS where available for an encrypted connection, following YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  3. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder from OBS and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Then select Go live there, as described in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

The encoder sends OBS’s composed program—including whichever scene is live—to YouTube. Keep the live stream running during the break and use the scene change for the visual intermission.

Rehearse the full episode-to-episode change

  • Start the timer and verify its duration and reset behavior.
  • Check readability at the stream’s intended resolution and confirm the timer is not obscured by other scene elements.
  • Switch from episode to countdown and back using the transition you plan to use live.
  • Listen to the audio during the countdown, including microphone and music behavior.
  • Test before broadcasting; YouTube’s break-overlay guidance also recommends testing an overlay before using it live.

Troubleshoot common countdown problems

The timer does not appear

Check that the Browser Source is in the countdown scene, that the correct URL or local file is loaded, and that the source fits within the scene canvas. Preview the scene in OBS before switching it live.

The timer starts at the wrong time or does not reset

Reset behavior varies by timer implementation. Check the selected page or file’s own controls and test what happens when you leave and re-enter the scene. If it cannot provide the timing you need, choose another implementation and rehearse it; OBS documentation does not establish a universal automatic-reset setting.

The break is silent, noisy, or has an open microphone

Inspect the audio sources active in the countdown scene and their levels. Mute the microphone if you are stepping away, and confirm whether any music or voiceover should continue.
