To put a countdown inside an encoder-based YouTube Live broadcast, build it into the scene you send from OBS: loop the video in a Media Source, layer a countdown visual above it, then hide or end that visual at zero. YouTube’s native countdown is for a Premiere, not a general countdown control for a live encoder stream. A scheduled Live stream can also show a trailer on its watch page before the broadcast begins.
Choose the right kind of countdown
First decide whether the countdown must appear in the actual live video feed or whether YouTube’s pre-show presentation is enough.

Use a Premiere for a scheduled video release
YouTube’s Premiere flow is for an uploaded video: upload it, schedule it as public, select Set as Premiere, then use Set up Premiere to choose the countdown theme and length. The countdown starts at the scheduled time for the duration you choose; YouTube’s help page says viewers see a live countdown two minutes before the Premiere. Use a Live trailer for watch-page pre-show
YouTube says a trailer plays for viewers on the watch page before a scheduled Live stream starts. Its help page lists eligibility as more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, and gives a trailer length of 15 seconds to 3 minutes. Check the current Studio interface and eligibility before relying on the feature, since platform requirements can change. Manage live stream settings Schedule video publish time

Build a countdown that switches to a looping video in OBS
For a countdown that viewers see as part of the live broadcast, compose both the countdown and loop in OBS. OBS documents a Media Source loop setting and scene sources such as media and text; it does not document a built-in configurable countdown timer in those guides. Use a countdown video, graphic, text source, or another timer source whose behavior you have verified.
- Prepare the loop and countdown. Have the video file you want to repeat and the countdown asset or timer source. Plan how the countdown will end or be hidden at zero so the loop underneath is revealed cleanly.
- Add the looping video. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS describes this setting as repeating the file after playback completes. For a playlist rather than one file, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. OBS Media Sources
- Place the countdown above the video. Add the countdown visual or text as another source in the same scene and place it above the Media Source in the source order. Test how that source stops or is hidden at zero; otherwise it may continue to cover the loop.
- Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, then start streaming from OBS. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots or in the stream output. - Preview before the event. Start the encoder early enough to preview the feed in Live Control Room, confirm that audio and video look right, and verify the transition from countdown to loop before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends encoder setup at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event; these are recommendations, not requirements. YouTube Streaming tips
Scheduling a Live stream can make it appear as upcoming, and viewers can opt in to receive a notification when it is about to begin. Schedule video publish time

Fix common countdown and loop problems
- The countdown is not visible in the live feed: A Premiere countdown or scheduled Live trailer is a YouTube presentation feature, not an OBS overlay. Add the countdown source to the outgoing OBS scene if it must appear in the broadcast itself.
- The loop stops after one play: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist and confirm VLC is installed.
- The countdown remains over the loop: Configure the countdown source to end or hide at zero, or switch to a scene without it. Preview that transition before the scheduled event.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Confirm the stream URL and key are entered correctly and that OBS is streaming to the scheduled event. Keep the key private.
- The scheduled start arrives before the setup is ready: Follow YouTube’s suggested lead time: configure the encoder at least two hours ahead, start it at least 15 minutes before the event, then preview audio and video in Live Control Room.
- The Live trailer option is unavailable: Check whether the channel meets YouTube’s stated eligibility and recheck the current Studio interface; the documented thresholds may change.
Check copyright and reused-content implications
A countdown overlay does not grant permission to use the music or video underneath it. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules for the material and format you plan to broadcast. A repeating prerecorded loop is still the content viewers receive, so do not assume that adding a timer makes it original or resolves rights concerns.
For a final preflight, review the copyright safety checklist and test the full opening sequence privately or unlisted before a public event.
